HOI4 Navy Guide | Patrol & Strike Force

This video serves as guide to the Patrol and Strike Force missions. In this I explain both the patrol and strike force orders, and discuss the well known strike force exploit. Please remember this video is not the be all end all, and other templates/applications might be viable as well.

Love this short vids. One question: Do patrol forces help subs finding convoys?

OK so take this with a grain of salt because I am not 100% sure and the wiki gives no information on this. As far as I can tell by experience and what information the game provides, having patrolling task forces raises the BASE spotting level you have in the region. However, they don't go after convoys themselves. So theoretically they should help the submarines spot, but they won't engage in battle with convoys like they would with enemy ships.

I never use patrols or strike force. I just use the convoy raid. Reason for this is that it seems I have a higher chance in engaging an enemy fleet or just luring them into protecting the convoy, then my ships can sink them.

Engagement chance is the same, but yes, this way you can easily destroy smaller task forces focused on defending convoys.

This is risky since: a) RIP fuel, b) could get chipped by nav/tac bombers since surface fleet have high visibility. I could see this works if you are USA in pacific or any open sea with no close land airbase.

If I put a scout plane on a reconnaissance mission does it help spotting enemies fleets?

Yes. It should improve the overall spotting in the zone they're deployed in. Same as land based radar.

@@bigschmokes on that note, can I completely forgo patrol missions and use solely scout planes to scout a sea tile? If the plane spots an enemy fleet will the strike force sortie to engage or does there need to be spotting cruisers on top of scout planes?

@@choleraphd7702 Essentially the planes function to raise the base spotting stat in the region, which means that any task forces you put on patrol have a higher chance of spotting enemies (which means a high level of spotting on the ships you deploy may not be required). Planes however cannot fully spot enemy ships by themselves, they only serve to enhance the spotting chance of your own ships.

Is convoy raiding better or worse than patrol to spot convoys?

Convoy raiding specifically targets convoys, whereas patrol targets all naval assets. Your submarines don't gain/lose spotting by using a different order. (unless specified in doctrines / bonuses that certain advisors or mods etc might give)

@bigschmokesvods Convoy raid seems to work just as good as strike force. If not better. Because my ships can stay out engaging convoys, this almost always lures the enemy fleet out, then I have a fleet engagement. In fact I think I've had alot more fleet engagements with convoy raid than with strike force.
