Great video -- you never really hear those big KZbinrs talk about efficiency, they just focus on defense, attack and agility really but when I make the designs theyb recommend they just perform average at best. I'll definitely be trying this out.

i was the one that made the feedback gaming plane competition, and yes, i tested in the last few weeks and putting a 2x cannon 1 is better than the 3 hmg the range thing is also something really important, however, there are a couple of things that i have to say, you are not taking into account that you can build more air bases as you advance, specially since when barbarossa starts you can have around 5k planes you can also build radar to increase the efficiency if you check the comments, there is a link to a couple os notes that i added to the spreadshet that discuss some of the issues with designing planes and how not every country can make the same plane and also, i really wish you had actually showed the test and the numbers you got, so we could actually see what you did and try to help eachother to find the best plane possible

Walter, I appreciate your tests and Feedback's video, I'm just poking fun here, if I went out of my way to include all the details, it would have subtracted from the comical element of the video. I absolutely agree that different countries should strive for different airplanes depending on when and how they want to fight. I freely admit that it was feedback who inspired me to make a KZbin channel and that I messaged you to give me tips on how to make aircraft tests in the first place.

Yeah, building airports also makes your planes more expensive because you invest IC that can be avoided with longer range. Also, you can't always build airports at the perfect location. However, @Veer Savarkar, Walter is right that you kind of need to calculate how many airplanes you're going to have at a certain point to see if you're gonna need more capacity because overcrowded airports are really bad. Still, if you're new and doing Single player don't worry about it, you can watch my long guide on the air war.

When BBA first came out, I put drop tanks on my planes because I figured it would help out in areas where airports where limited or help get my more of my fighters into air zones from far away as my AI "allies" would try to cram into the closest airport. I got away from it in favor of the armored plates that everyone insisted was the best route (since everything was still being tweaked and figured out). So I gotta tip my hat to this video for looking at something from a different angle (and vindicating my early thoughts ;) )

When range is lacking, it's a penalty to both your offense and defense, and a big penalty at that. Other stats are important as long as range isn't lacking 🥷

I usually use 3X4 Heavy Machine gun. 1 engine tier 2 or 3 1 armor plate, 1drop tanks and self sealing. Drop tanks dont reduce agility and it provides 300 range

In sp, the ai is more than willing to contest in bad efficiency for it, it snowballs quickly since you get wing xp and wind up with more current models with aces when you're 4 to 1. Imo it's even more important in mp, where the opponent can not be so easily baited into short range planes, and where winning in the air actually matters.

What does FDR have to say about heavy fighters? Are they a better deal or does the high production cost prevent it from being better? IMO, I think heavy fighters are pretty good late game but I do like to produce them if I can afford them and also get the tech for tactical bombers for CAS and Bombing

They definitely have an application in the game as they will always have better range and air attack values. The problem is the cost. So build them if you're doing strat bombers or fighting in super large airzones where you need that 100% efficiency. What they can't do for you is protect you against a player who spams great light fighters that are not struggling for range.

Anyone that plays a lot of Japan knows that researching and using drop tanks for China is a must. Without them you cannot reach inner China or even cover the coastal zones. Even carrier planes get drop tanks so they can help fight in China and become veteran carrier air wings. Im not a big fan of armor plates, except for bombers since they have longer range by default. Normally I use drop tank + fuel seal on basic fighter models and drop tank + armor plate + fuel seal on improved and higher fighters. Im not sure about the cannon 1 though. Im assuming you would upgrade those to cannon 2 late game? Would the lower speed and agility not cost you more planes as you get out traded by other fighters? As far as I know, Air Attack only needs to be higher than Air Defense for it to allow downing planes in one attack. This means that with the triple quad HMG's you can "pierce" all fighters even if they go 2 armor + fuel seal. I think fighter armor is only useful against inferior planes with low Air Attack. Planes with 2 quad LMG's can "pierce" a basic airframe with fuel seal. As it is 16 Attack vs 15 Defense, while improved airframe with fuel seal gives 17 defense. triple HMG gives 36 Air Attack, which you cannot beat even with Modern Small airframe 2 armor + fuel seal (32 Def). So it should be pointless to put armor on fighters when fighting other up to date fighters. It might however be worth it if used against bombers with Air Attack from defensive turrets. Air Attack also increases Air Superiority, so does that increase some stat like efficiency or air detection? If that is the case it would make sense to use 1 cannon as the penalty to agility and speed is not that high. I am not an expert and have never ran any tests or played MP, ive got over 2k hours in singleplayer. I always start with building Basic fighter with engine 2, 2 quad LMG's > upgrade to quad HMG, drop tank + fuel seal. And Improved fighter engine 3, 3 quad HMG, drop tank, armor, fuel seal. I just checked Advanced air frame stats and it gives 15 more agility compared to improved. Maybe it makes more sense to put cannons on this frame as the agility loss and difference isnt that high. I cant see cannons being used for dogfighting, but more in intercepting early strat bombers and tac bombers. Heavily armored tac bombers with 2 armor and fuel seal have 35/38/40/44/44 armor. 2 HMG 1 2x cannon gives 44 Air Attack and should be able to pierce them all game. Strat bombers with 2 armor + fuel seal get 46/51/61/76/80 armor. This cannot be pierced late game by 3x 2x cannon ll's with their 72 Air Attack and would require a canon defense turret to bring it to 80. This would result in an Improved fighter with 43 agility or Advanced with 58. The latter makes more sense technology wise as cannon 2 is late tech. I believe that if you want to win fighter vs fighter you build 3 HMG and use cannons only for intercepting bombers. If Air Superiority affects fighter vs fighter combat then I could see it being a thing.

You have to determine where you'll be fighting. If the area is big enough to justify adding more range, then do it, possibly even consider heavy fighters. You can make variants without losing a lot of IC, so build some fighters for defense if you need them and then plan how many long range you need and how much range you need.
