HOI4: What's The Point of The Fifth Portuguese Empire?

Today in Portugal the Fifth Portuguese Empire shall be proclaimed, the New State will be dismantled so that the whole nation shall be reshaped ready for the coming global conflict so that Portugal can assume it's place as a Great Power once more.
Along the way we will try to find the point to the Fifth Empire, looking at it's upsides and downsides all while we attempt to bend the world to our will, by force of arms.

The Fifth Portuguese Empire has gotten quite a lot of requests in the past. It seems to be quite popular, hence it gets a longer video so it could be explored thoroughly. Also it's nice to have a good portion devoted to being the Empire instead of mostly buildup. Hey Bubbles! You should mention how Portugal has just enough range that you can snipe the Netherlands as soon as you turn fascist, rather than going for Spain right away! Taking down the netherlands lets you take the East Indies, which are extremelly valuable, and gives you quite a nice place from where you can invade the UK, attack Germany or do a double invasion into France after taking down Belgium, depending on your plans.

I have a challenge, despite being a year late. Try to form Al-Andalus... AND Arabia... in the same game! The only nation that can do this is Libya, so you'd have to set the decolonized Africa and Asia game rules, and use console commands to switch to Libya, but it would be really cool to see someone do that.

The fifth empire is a concept that's very present in our popular culture, its the great comeback of Portugal, not really in terms of a physical empire, but a spiritual and philosophical empire, of culture

It isn't that much present today at all... I myself, a portuguese and someone interested in history, didn't know about this concept before I saw it in hoi4. It is a quite interesting concept. It is like taking the idea of Portugal being a catholic kingdom with the sacred mission of destroying the Muslims (os mourso, os hereges...), but taking it to the next level, saying that Portugal has the divine duty of conquering the entire world, turning it all catholic, so that Jesus can comeback or something like that (that specific religious and spiritual specific things, I don't know that well, since I am not that much into catholic and Christian theology) But yeah, it is basically this.

@@GuilhermePereira-vi6vc It's taught in school when discussing Fernando Pessoa, it's not a physical empire at all like the game points it to be, it's an idea of a spiritual empire where the world would be united by Portuguese culture peacefully. How this would happen is beyond me

Actually, before Pessoa, the idea was popularized by Padre António Vieira and was in fact based on the military and cultural hegemony of the Portuguese empire which at his time seemed like a quite likely prospect.

@@realhawaii5o That is true, but given the game takes place in the 1930s and 1940s, I'd say Pessoa's fifth empire would overshadow that of António Vieira, which (Pessoa's) was developed after the centuries of humiliation and degradation of the Portuguese empire, which was deemed a "corpse" by the 18th century, hence the more spiritual and "peaceful" take on the fifth empire idea, last time Portufal had gone to war in 1936 was WW1, where the Portuguese operations were a stark failure in the front they fought, the western front, and the Germans also had a field trip in Mozambique But whatever, it's paradox, not graduates of Portuguese literature, regardless it's a fun idea they implemented

The fifth empire is a concept popularized by Portuguese priest snd influential writer, Father António Vieira and popularized by the 20th century poet Fernando Pessoa. The first Empire is the Assyro-Caledonian; The second, the Persian; The third, the Greek. The fourth is the Roman. The fifth, according to Father Vieira, is the Portuguese.

Luso-Tropicalism being barred to the Fifth Empire path is dumb because the concept is culturally based, not racially, and anyone embarking on it would see those colonies and all their inhabitants as integral part of the nation.

You should make your indian territory a collab government and then feed it the British Raj. This way you have an India without any negative modifiers to manpower etc. that the Raj has if you just puppet it normally. You can do the same with China of course.

France gets cores from Colonies via the referendum and then gets annexed to UK vía Franco-Brittish Union.

I'm playing this with a friend who's playing as Sweden but I think I messed it up.. I never did anything in the East and had to let go of Angola and Mozambique, but am conquering South America very slowly. Can't get my Stability back up though, no matter what I do. It's stuck at 0-1% :/

@@azh698 you may be right about russia, couldn’t play it recently unfortunately. I think though that bulgaria is way harder to start out with. Turkey has very little internal problems at the start, decent army and navy and even some planes alongside a pretty overpowered focus tree. I can get everyone in the balkans excluding romania and albania alongside the middle east and afghanistan in 1941 and even become a part of the china war while waiting for the germans to start barbarossa. I think their potential is unmatched in singleplayer, avoiding the allies with the uk guarantee entirely. One of if not the strongest minor powers in the world easily through so much opportunity, it is very easy to become a powerhouse.
