"The king and his men stole the queen from her bed, and bound her in her bones." That's the Pirate King, Davy Jones, of the first Brethren Court, and the nine pirate lords, stole the goddess Calypso from her bed of the sea, and bound her in human form. "The seas be ours, and by the powers, where we will, we'll roam." "Oh, we claimed the sea for ourselves, aye, but opened the door to Beckett, and his ilk!" "Now some have died, and some are alive, and others sail on the sea." Referring to the pirate lords. Some are dead, like Sao Feng, others are alive, like Jack Sparrow. And others are neither, but sail on the sea regardless, like Barbossa. "with the keys to the cage, and the devil to pay, we lay to Fiddler's Green." They carry the nine pieces of eight, the keys to Calypso's cage, and the only one to contend with is that devil, Davy Jones. And they lay to Fiddler's Green, the afterlife for sailors, a heaven to the Locker's hell. "The bell has been raised from its watery grave, hear its sepulchral tone." The song has been sung, a death knell for the age of pirates. "A call to all, pay heed the squall, and turn your sails toward home." The song calls a final meeting of the Brethren Court, all the lords must sail to Shipwreck Cove, the home of pirates if ever there was one.

What I really like about this, is that it wasn't just a random decision to sing a random song. This was the decision of a child who saw what was happening to his kind and decided it was time for the pirates to unite and fight back. There was so much emotion and power behind the scene because the pirates singing it all knew they were doomed, but this was their last possible chance to fight for what they believe in. Their last chance to make a mark. It's not just a song. It's a battle cry, and the other pirates heard it! I wish they ended the franchise with 3. It would've been perfect.

This makes me want to learn the old ways, from the days of sail. Even today, "hoist the colors" means to raise a flag -- usually the ship's nation of origin. In the old days, to "hoist the colors" meant that war on the seas was about to commence, as pirates usually would fly under the radar and avoid notice -- particularly with regards to the British, who was brutal in their treatment of pirates and the crime of piracy. However, one of the causes of the War of 1812 in America was that British ships would impress American sailors against their will -- basically capturing them and conscripting them during peacetime. Thing is, the sailors being impressed into service were neither military sailors nor marines, but rather merchant sailors. But regardless, to "hoist the colors" was a way to identify your ship -- and depending upon where your home port of call was, would depend on how you got treated. To raise the Jolly Roger was either an act of intimidation, or an act of suicide.
@aperez1ish2 жыл бұрын
many ships, both civilian and military, kept flags of most maritime nations and would raise different nation's flags depending on the situation/ where they were. The term "true colors" comes from the fact that it was an unwritten rule to raise your actual nation's flag during interactions such as battles, though this was broken a lot as well to cause confusion in large battles.

This song... This song is so much more than just sad. This is the song of a dying culture, calling all its members together for a final resistance, a last attempt to cling to life and their way of living it. It is also a legend, a forgotten truth, remembered only in this song: the deed done to imprison Calysto; the opening and closing deed for their style of living; what allowed them to roam the seas freely, and what now allows them to be hunted down and killed with next to no resistance. And, finally, it's a testament to who they are: the pirates in the Caribbean. It gives them strength, forges them together, enables them to stand as one, to come together, which they wouldn't normally do. Their culture is built upon ultimate freedom for every pirate, but now, just this once, they can come together, and fight together; not every man for himself like usual, but one for all, and all for one. This song defines a culture and brings it together in times of need. That is what makes it so powerful. EDIT: And it conveys pride in what they are; it calls for them to "hoist the colours high"; if such pride in times of such dire circumstances is not strength, I don't know what is.

The thing is... This song was carefully managed by a technician to fit and be right. Saying that it was better without music is forgetting the shanty is the music itself and they remix it. I don't know if they called the people in the cene, if they are a coral or they are extras, but I know someone with experience touch this music and make sure it was right. Sorry, but having some musicians and technicians in my family, it's painful seeing their work don't be considered. But I agree that it is beautiful, the song and the performance.

@@rabbiama2940 He was the very definition 9f a villain. He was rounding up people who were not necessarily pirates, but might be tangentially associated with them. He then started executing people without benefit of trial and without proof of guilt or innocence. Nor did he care about class or status, as we see when he kills Elizabeth's father, who was not a pirate. The difference between him and the pirates is that he was supposedly acting within the law while they were outside of it. Holy shit.... this song is about Davy Jones and crew betraying Calypso!!! Edit: ok, yes I understand that it should have been a fairly obvious observation. That being said I think my three year old post missed some other critical observations from this song that other fairly oblivious people like me might enjoy. Verse 1: as said the king and his men stealing the king from her bed and binding her in her bones is an obvious bit of foreshadowing the revelation that the King of the Brethren Court, the Court itself, and Davy Jones betrayed Calypso and cast a spell on her to trap the goddess in her human form, leaving control of the seas to them. “The seas be ours, and by the powers, where we will we’ll roam.” Verse 2: The critical aspect of this verse is “with the keys to the cage and the devil to pay, we lay fiddler’s green.” This verse seems focused on the consequences of their betrayal as it opens with “now some have died, and some are alive, and others sail on the sea.” So the key’s to the cage clearly seem to be referring to the pieces of eight that are passed down to each successive generation of pirate lords and proof of the Pirates ultimate sin. So what is “Fiddler’s green?” Well according to maritime mythology of the period it was a particularly brutal form of afterlife where the overwhelming monotony slowly wears on ones psyche until they go insane, complete with a never ending fiddle being played. This could serve as a description of Davy Jones’s Locker where we see Jack Sparrow is clearly suffering hallucinations being trapped in an endless purgatory that doesn’t change. Verse 3: the final verse only paints a worse picture for the Pirates, even those living. “The bell has been raised from its watery grave. Hear it’s sepulchral tone.” This is a description of the ghost ship Flying Dutchman rising from the bottom of the sea and the ethereal music that comes from the brooding Captain Davy Jones fiercely playing his massive organ. “A call to all, pay heed the squall, and turn your sails to home” refers to the monstrous Kraken that Davy Jones summons to bring down vessels. Most people probably understood the lyrics but if you tend to miss a thing or two like me I figured this edit might do some good :)

why do people keep complaining about the singing? first of all this is not meant to "sound" good in a sense, its not for sensitive ears, we don't look for the people singing, we look at the song itself, although i agree it does sound rough. its meant to be that way. shanties are not meant to be perfected by voice, but to be understood though the words. personally i understand the song the first time i heared it, i didn't just listen to them sing, i listened to the actual song itself.

I have a strange feeling this song in its first verse is actually referring to the Goddess Calypso as "the queen" be sure they say the king and his men stole the queen from her bed. This could mean the early pirate king captured Calypso in a trap that pulled her out not the sea which was her bed. Then the major piece that really makes me thing the first verse is about Calypso is the mentioning of "bound her in her bone" this verse doesn't make any sense at first but when you find out that Calypso was sealed away in a mortal version of herself it makes perfect sense. This song is about the pirates bragging on how after dethroning Calypso they are now free to go and do as they please. No matter how many have died...

Calypso was a deceiver when she was in her original form and she ordered Davy Jones to ferry the souls who die at sea for 10 years and because Jones thought their love was true, he obliged. She pretended to love Davy Jones, the Pirate King, when in all actuality, she loves the sea and not Jones, and because of this, Jones was angered so he took his men and bound Calypso in mortal flesh. Long story short, Jones still couldn't handle this betrayal so he cut out his heart and put it in a chest, along with letters to calypso and buried it in an island where no one would find it. And as long as that heart beats, Jones will forever be the Captain of the Dutchman. That is until Turner took over lol.

@meganlodon4 жыл бұрын
The song was written for the movie to tell the tale of Calypso, Jones, and the Court. Below is my analysis. *The Chorus:* _Yo ho, haul together_ _Hoist the colors high_ _Heave ho, thieves and beggars_ _Never shall we die_ The chorus is sung numerous times within the song. It's basically telling the pirates, full of thieves and beggers, to get ready to set sail. The lyrics here are obvious in meaning. *First verse:* _The King and his men_ _stole the Queen from her bed_ _and bound her in her bones_ The King is Davy Jones and the Queen is Calypso. He and his crew stole her from her bed which is the ocean itself. They bound her in her bones which refers to binding her to her human form. _the seas be ours and by the powers_ _where we will we'll roam_ The seas literally belongs to the pirates due to having power over Calypso. *Second verse:* _Now some have died_ _and some are alive_ _and others sail on sea_ This is a reference to the chorus of the song, which mention the pirates as thieves and beggars. This part of the verse is obvious in meaning. _with the keys to the cage_ _and the Devil to pay_ The "keys" to the cage are the nine Pieces of Eight, which were used to bind Calypso. The Devil refers to Davy Jones himself since he's the one that told the Brethren Court how to bind her; he's also a devil of sorts, or what I like to call, an ocean bound Hades. _we lay to Fiddler's Green._ Fiddler's Green is an after-life of paradise for sailors where a fiddle never stops playing, but in the POTC universe, it is a tavern located in Davy Jones' locker (probably has a fiddle playing inside to fit the narrative). *Third verse:* _The bell has been raised_ _From it's watery grave..._ _Do you hear it's sepulchral tone?_ _A call to all_ _Pay head the squall_ _And turn your sails to home!_ This entire verse may refer to the scene of POTC where the pirates sing their song, and the Brethren Court is summoned to join together. A "all pirates unite" type of moment.
