I needed a shoe like this. My local running club has runs that incorporate both light trails and road. Last Saturday the course took me though some fairly steep downhill running. I'm 64 and don't run fast, 12 minutes per mile in training. Wow was I scared as I went downhill! I couldn't control my speed with regular grip running shoes. Keep that up and one day I would take a nasty fall. Went down to my local running store and picked up a pair of the ATR 6. This shoe really feel comfortable and fits me well. Looking for good things on my next combo run.

The Challenger became my autumn/winter shoe option for easy pased runs in the forest and on the road. It provides the traction I often miss in road shoes especially when the paths are wet. The only downside I noticed so far is that the toe box feels a bit narrow when you are going for an ultra marathon with thicker socks.

I bought my pair after my wife recommended them. She had a pair for running and I bought her a new pair so I decided to get myself a pair. They are good and comfortable with only one problem. The sticker or decal on the inside sole comes off and gets annoying after only a week of use.

Big shoutout to the ATR Challenger lineup. I have used the ATR5 in Grand Junction, Southern California, Reno Nevada on trails & Road with lots of incline and flat long dirt road and single track. Best all around All Terrain Shoe! If your routes include any trail/pavement combo get this shoe. The stack height might be something to get used to, but this has great stability even on gravle or rock.

That's a beautiful color. I rarely see any good color in the Hooka line. When I visit a store all I have seen are ugly colors that don't even match. I hope they could care this color in more stores.

got the atr5 and love it, jack of all trades really. great on gravel, and it's even slightly quicker on the road than my clifton 7s (and a tad bit stiffer). and yes i concur, that yellow version looks dope.

Great review. Found your channel living in Munich and think I will buy this shoe for the trails around Nymphenburg Palace. Will look at the Speedgoat for trails in the Alps. Thanks!

For an all-terrain Altra, I would recommend looking into the OUtroad. We have a review up of that shoe, which is essentially a road trail hybrid

thanks for the great review. How well do you think the Challenger handles wet rocks, dry rocks, wet roots for hiking? I'm in the southeast end of the AT and it is wet hear so much of the year and other Hokas were a little slippery on wet hard surfaces. I tried the speedgoat, but not enought toe box height for me. Thanks
@RunMoore2 жыл бұрын
It likely would not be enough traction for a very rocky trail (not gravel, but big technical rocks) that's wet.

Thanks for the great input. I went with the Torrents and last week climbed Mt Sherman, 14K outside Leadville and the shoes did very well with regard to traction and toe protection despite not really designed for this. I only wish they had a little more cushion like the Challenger from the Cliftons. But on dirt I think they will wear well. Need a Clifton with the Torrent tread or even the vibrum from the Speedgoat. Speedgoat toe area was too shallow for me. Thanks

great review..!!! How comfortable it is for ATR 6 compared to clifton 8 ? I have ATR 6 GTX and am interested to buy the clifton 8 as my cushioned-easy run shoe. But if it's having similar comfortable, I think I'm gonna stick with the ATR 6 for my easy run. thanks..!!! :D
@RunMoore2 жыл бұрын
They are similar structure-wise, but the Clifton definitely feels softer because the sole is not as dense.

Hi, Can you please help? I have a higher instep and moderate to high arch w/bunion, healed plantar fasciitis and lingering tendon issue on the inside of the ankle. I tried the brooks dyad 11 wearing an 8.5 wide and the top fit great around the top of my foot & heel but the bottom felt too hard. The Paradigm 5 bottom cushion felt great but fit way too small. New Balance 840v4 lacks cushioning & the tongue is short and hurts my foot. Will these Hoka 's be a good fit for me? Can you please guide me to a pair that will accommodate my Spenco Total Support orthotic and higher instep & bunion? I really need to get back to walking again! Thanks in advance!!

Is there an ATR that compares in width to the bondi 7 ? I can only wear a woman’s wide in bondi or even the men’s in wide. I have tried all of the other hoka running shoes in wide, but they did not work. I have to order mine, so it would be helpful to know a comparison . I really want a good everyday off-road and road shoe. Thank You
@RunMoore3 жыл бұрын
If you wear a Women's Wide in the Bondi 7, the most likely comparable width would be a Wide in the Women's ATR 6

HI there, great review. I have a pair of ATR5, going towards their end life so considering changing to the ATR6. Other online reviewers mention a dislike for the laces / not great lock feeling. Any thoughts on that? Would another set of shoelaces something you'd perhaps recommend?
@RunMoore4 жыл бұрын
The laces on the ATR 6 are a new fancy yarn made from recycled plastic that Hoka is trying out. The feel of the laces is definitely different but I did not notice the laces slipping or issues with the lock feeling.

Is it true to size in length? I will definitely need the 2e, but sometimes I even need to go up a half size as well. For example even though I measure a 9.5 I needed a 10 2e in the Bondi 7.
@RunMoore2 жыл бұрын
You should be going up a half or whole size from what you measure on a brannock device. The line your toe comes to means your foot is the same length as that size shoe so obviously you will need to be in a shoe with about a half an inch's more room in the toe to be comfortable.

Three of the best options for shoes if you're walking and standing are the Hoka Bondi 7, Altra Paradigm 5, and Brooks Beast 20. I hope this helps!

How would you compare and recommend the Challenger ATR 6 vs the Stinson ATR 6 ?
@RunMoore4 жыл бұрын
The Stinson ATR 6 is the max cushion version of the Challenger ATR 6. If you're looking for more cushion and/or are doing longer miles, you might want to look into the Stinson ATR 6.

@@RunMoore Hi. Have you raced with the Stinson ATR 6? I am currently running with the Bondi 7 which I like a lot, I bought Speedgoat 4 for the trail but I do not have a good feeling with it. I need a pair of shoes to run on the road or on trail, I hesitate between the Challenger and the Stinson. I'm afraid of a very comfortable Stinson but not reactive or agile enough, you don't have a lighter, easier but too firm Challenger.
@RunMoore3 жыл бұрын
@@thierryung9387 Sadly I have not. I do a lot of longer trail in the Mafate EVO 2, which I love but it's a lot of shoe. I actually just got back from a trip and I took the Torrent 2's for a hiking/walking/road running/trail running shoe. While it was not as grippy as I was accustomed to from the Mafate's they were perfect for what I needed. Even though they are lighter than the Challengers I found them more comfortable for doing a myriad of activities. Long answer to say no...
@thierryung93873 жыл бұрын
@@RunMoore Thank you for the answer. I'm also hesitant with the Mafate Speed 3 but I'm afraid of its handling on the road, which is not, I think, its favorite surface. WDYT? Regards.

Thanks for checking out our review. There is not much of a difference in fit width wise from the 5 but the upper is more flexible giving a better overall fit. Hope this helps.
