As an Irish man who served in the British armed forces your speech hit home to me. God bless you. The Irish and the Maori have always had close connections working in the mines in the Australia. Fighting and drinking together haha. Great song my friend.

Ka pai. Im an old feller now but loved growing up and going to what us Pakehas call jam sessions. Back in my farming days working around the Waikato shearing sheds with some highly talented young Maori shearers and rousies. Every friday night a singalong and great comrarderie. Hoki Mai always was played. Loved your story telling bro thankyou very much.

I love this waiata, especially the original version written by my Koro Henare Waitoa of Ngati Porou, Te Riu o Waiapu for the homecoming of Kamupene C otherwise knowen as ngā kaupoi, youll hear alot of our Kaumatua now and they hate the upbeat version of this waiata! Especially because alot of the lyrics have be changed and repeated like "Te Haki Te Haki" the original version is a long drawn out "Te Haki"... the biggest critic when it comes to this waiata is my Nanny Cindy Waitoa who was Henare Waitoas favorite mokopuna and she always corrects anyone who sings it wrong... anyway loved to hear you sing this waiata
