Halo Anniversary Legendary Walkthrough: Mission 4 - The Silent Cartographer

This level competes with Halo for my favorite in the game, and some of my favorites in the whole series. And for very similar reasons; lots of vehicle combat, nonlinear, and full of marines to fight alongside. As a kid, I did this beach assault countless times. I agree with others that Silent Cartographer is iconic of Combat Evolved's style.

@MultiInsight Thank you! This mission actually is pretty easy, but trust me on this one because I'm working on editing it right now: Assault on the Control Room is anything but easy. The video is 90 minutes long with about 30 minutes of deaths edited out. To put that in perspective, I counted 5 deaths edited out of this one, and didn't die in any one spot more than once. Brace yourself.

It's games like this that lead me to believe my generation has a paradigm shift from previous. We've been educated by computer scientists and programmers, working together with script writers, musicians and basically the best the previous generation has to write an experience so immersive I used to dream about being master chief. I accept that 2d games were doing the same kind of thing, just not so deeply. A 2d side scrolling experience has little of the tactics and strategy taught by rote to children, and calculated by adolescent and adult alike. Management of resources, of people, instant decision making based on knowledge, intuitive control mechanisms. With a story that says, find the map room, you'll need secondary access to open the main door, and there will be both heavy enemy defence and invisible intelligent defence, supported by a while swag of grunts and mid level players. The music touches on the classic view boys and Indians whilst simultaneously being Gregorian and symphonic. All the while, an Ai sits inside your helmet talking you through. Beautiful.

I remember when I was 5 years old playing this ( the original CE) back in early 2000, and me and my little bro would storm the beach and once we got to the warthog we would restart the mission to just repeat it cus the intro was so cool

Hokie, when you parked the Warthog at 10:15 to give you cover from the grunts and elites, I thought to myself why didn't I think of that? However I took it a step further. After everything was dead I got back into the hog and used it to go up the path for the encounter with the hunters. It was such a great feeling to splatter those 2 bastards with the hog. I then parked the hog close to the clearing so they could then take out the jackels that show up. After that I left the hog there and took out the rest of the enemies on foot. After I went inside the building I took care of the hunters with the famous Hokie belly shot. After I came back out of the building I started to make my way back to the hog. I could hear them shooting at something and when I got to them there was a Phantom dropping off a few more grunts and jackels and thats what the marines were shooting at. I helped them to mop up and the rest was history.

Nice job! I found that the Hog was a little too difficult to get past the tree and up the path to the Hunters to be able to recommend that strategy for a walkthrough, but hey, if it works for you, have at it!

+Michael William I replayed this level on Original today and did the same thing for the first time, got the Warthog up the narrow path in the middle. The marines really made an effective cover in that forest area. They didn't even take damage because the trees and the hill made it difficult for the Covenant to strike them down. And yes, it works nicely on Legendary. Getting out was a lot easier than getting in.

I did this level on legendary co-op with my friend about a 2 hours ago I freaked out when we completed it because it is my first time playing legendary in halo and did it first time even I though I know no one plays halo Mcc I still play it pretty much everyday it's a really great game and very underrated even though I'm not a fan of online,custom game and campagin are great also what's your least favourite level on halo ce mine is library also halo ce is one of my fav halos.I know u won't see this comment but I love ur videos and keep up the amazing work your really good at these legendary walkthroughs thanks!

Used to love parking the Warthog at the top of the island interior path that leads to the security structure, just before the hunters. If done at the point where the walls are lowest, you could jump up on the warthog minigun and on top of the cliffs and shoot the covenant from the top. Nice views too.

just to let you know, if u didnt already, there is a way to move the warthog into the inner part of the island and use it for the battle past the hunters, not only that but once your finished underground u can use it to conserve an overshield and drive off the cliff, it does skip some of the enemies, but thats the way ive done since i was little, itleast on foot, its alot easier with the warthog and conserves an overshield for later battles. though u do have to grab it

Get close to them, and then get to them to melee you. If you're in front of them, shoot them in the belly as soon as they raise their shield to hit you. Or, you can sidestep their melee, and then easily shoot them in the back. This only really applies for Combat Evolved/Anniversary though, because for Halo 2 and on, Hunters became rather agile. Their movements became quick and spastic, and their melee attacks became practically undodgeable.

I think it's quite fitting that my Halo Legendary journey ends where my Halo CE journey truly began. I remember I used to spend ages replaying the Halo PC demo. Some memorable moments include my first encounter with Hunters and getting the everloving crap scared out of me by the Zealot, to whom I died an embarassing number of times while playing on Easy difficulty.

you can get the warthog up the narrow path at 10:19 if you aim it slitty toward the hill on the left side of the tree and start back a bit and then work it threw

with enough dedication you can get a warthog deep into the facility by using the other 2 warthogs to ram it through tight doorway, youll need to employ other means to get the 3rd warthog through the door that closes at that one part 2 people are obviously needed

Try not to rely on Bandana. Assault on the Control Room and Two Betrayals play out VERY differently when you have infinite Sniper Rifle ammo, and infinite Rockets. Leave bandana for co-op, where you just want to have a good time with a buddy instead of worrying about ammo conservation.

I’m surprise you don’t know the trick of how to force the warthog past the large tree to unlock the doors - sometimes you can just drive it really fast and it will bounce up right through the left side of the tree other times you have to take the second warthog and ram it through Whether you have Marines in it or not having the chain gun in the next section is a lifesaver not to mention splattering the hunters

Are these videos you playing MCC or CEA? I’m going through the latter and sometimes enemies behavior or placement is slightly different. The first encounter was tough because the second group of grunts, not the first 6, over the slight hill kept grenadine my marines before I could take out the first 6.

ive gotten the warthog thru the other side of the tree. thats useful so you can park out side the hunter area and just use the hog to go off the cliff: quicker rocket!!

I stick with the car and the 2 guys The Whole mission. It is possible to make the Warthog get Through that area at 10:30 ... I do it after Killing the grunts and The elite, then I kill the hunters and take The Warthog to the place you are at 12:40 so they help me with those that come out there... and then I take them further. . . Once im done with opening the gate I kill The grunts on the Hills and then I take The Warthog with the 2 guys again and go down where the pelican is at. . . And I proceed to do exactly as you do from that point.... I never separate

If you put your warthog at a wrong angle and the shooter doesn’t shoot the gold elite towards the end of the mission have a overcharged plasma pistol shot ready, shoot him and then stick him

Oh my goodness You don’t know about after you get into the lock door and kick the mask off the cliff go to the right and if you jump just perfectly you can land on this little edge and skip all of those rooms of enemies

Just because my guide does not skip any enemy encounters and shows how to fight everything does not mean I don’t know about speedrunning tricks. I intentionally do not use them because it’s very important for a guide to show how to fight everything out. Otherwise you’re not really learning how to play the game, you’re just learning how to skip it.
