Damn, this brought back some old memories. My first car was a white VH straight 6, lowered, mags, sports exhaust, extractors, stereo, 10 inch subwoofer in parcel shelf and totally blue veloured interior, I probably would have spent over 10k on in it with plans on dropping a 308 in it but ended up rear ending a Patrol nearly writing the car off. Did some shonky backyard repairs and chucked a VC grill on it but it looked crap and never drove the same so took it to the wreckers (I did take out all the good stuff) and walked away with only $500! 😂

Yes all VL was 304, though 304 came out during VK. Earliest VK groupA SL was 308, counter intuitive considering the point of making the change

Re RPM gauge @9:26 the VH came in 3 variants - SL, SL/X and SL/E (executive). Only the SL/E had a tacho, the other variants had an ‘economy’ gauge in that place which measured manifold vacuum. At idle the needle would sit at 2 o’clock position and move anticlockwise with more acceleration.

Definitely old school especially no powersteering like family HJ Kingswood, brother XE but my VH had powersteering with automatic 202 six, awesome vid with nice 308 sound.

Only berlina and Calais had rev guage and almost all extra buttons on middle dash, i had a vk 5.0 wagon Berlina for 25o bucks in 2010 and paddock bashed it for a weekend, sad how much they going for today,but i got my vt 5.0 Berlina sedan still

VLs did not come with 308s, they were all 304s.

Still the same 308 cast block in a VL. Still has 308 cast on the side. They reduced the stroke to make it a 304. I have a VL block (now stroked) sitting in an engine cradle in my garage, 10 meters from me right now! Copied from the internet- In August 1984 Holden reduced the stroke of the 308 engine by 40thou (1mm), giving a capacity of 4997cc (304ci). This change involved a new crankshaft, rods, pistons and cam. Several versions of the 304ci engine were produced.

The 4987cc 304.3 has a 3" stroke = 62 thou difference the bore was 4" still same as 308

I really hate it when young guys, who weren’t even born when the cars they’re drooling over, are trying to tell us older blokes how good they are. I actually had a VH Group 3 back in the day, I purchased it 2nd hand from a co-worker who needed the $$$, only reason I don’t still have it is some maggot stole it whilst it was at a Holden dealership being serviced. No cctv back in the late 80’s. I had to sue the dealership to get compensation as the keys were left in the car after it had been washed. Strangely enough no one lost their job and apparently it wasn’t the first such incident, as I found out when we went to court.

That's a VK motor, its not a VL, vls had a 304 motor....VKs came with a black 308 motor...definitely VK sounding motor......yous got it wrong

304 started in VK. "308" is occasionally used to describe everything that's not injected with bananas
