Bloody good job that..!!!! I Remember being young bloke at school and our motor mechanics teacher said if you are driving a car boys and the temperature gauge assuming you’ve got one happens to go into the red pullover leave it idling to keep the coolant circulating and sort it out on the side of the road ASAP if you keep driving and the gauge starts to drop back out of the red all that means is you’ve ignored it and most likely you’ve now chucked all the coolant out of the system which lowers the temperature at the probe and you’re now about to seize the motor…….. Don’t know if it’s true my Holden HQ had a red “TEMP” light no temperature gauge but when she started getting hot the red light used to come on very dimly before it went full bright red……. What a flashback:…!!!!!

@@holdenvtseries2274 spot on mate , my vz was a nightmare. I've always had old chryslers and older holdens that were great cars until I bought the Vz . That thing broke down at least every 2 weeks and horrible to work on. Best thing I've ever done is trade it for vy ss Ute. Didn't expect it to be so bad, Holden always has built a good car especially the old Holden V8. I can't stand the sight of an Alloytec now. Happy New year mate.

Just a tip for people be careful about running just water as it can cause damage to the Rear Main Seal Housing. The coolant starts to drip from the bell housing. As of this date Holden (or what is left of them) sell the housing kit for $250 AUD.

My 2002 model Holden VY SS Commodore boiled over today at my local Supercheap Auto store but the temperature 🌡️ gauge showed up as being normal & I had recently replaced the coolant in the radiator. One of the store people & I were thinking that there was an air pocket inside of the cooling system, despite the VY V8 Commodores having a header tank on them it still managed to overheat, the radiator is 4 years old and I have never had that sort of trouble with it before,I topped it up with water at SCA today & it hasn't overheated when idling it at home so that we air pocket is a mystery. I sanded the gasket surface flat in the thermostat cover of my dads 2000 model Holden VX V6 Commodore to rectify a coolant leak which was coming from the thermostat cover gasket. I believe his has a clockspring issue as well because the airbag turns on & it stays on now,he had it cleared by a mechanic & Holden but it has come back this year with the airbag light issue !

The original Holden intake gaskets normally fail, oil mixes in the coolant. In the USA, they use the ac delco aluminium ones. Just like the mace ones. Most people never completely drain the coolant, to do that. You need to remove the knock sensor’s.

Hi Zig i have a vy ecotec and it overheated yesterday due to a split bottom hose. I noticed both fans were operating at that point even before overheating. My question is, when does the smaller fan drivers side operate only one fan works now the big one passenger side but the small one drivers side doesnt even with the a/c on... or does that one only only operate under extreme engine heating hence they both worked when it got really hot
