Fun fact: in my country, the movie had a subtitle that translates to "The Rivals". Also the great thing about Toy Story is that its about the existential dread of being replaced and becoming obsolete... And those themes REALLY ramp up in the sequel. Jessie's story and that flipping song make me cry everytime. The thing is, for a while it was thought that not even Pixar would follow up on the implications that they set on the first two movies, even though Andy growing up and moving on was an inevitability... AND THEN THEY DO. It was frankly ballsy and shows why Pixar are (or used to be) the best animation studio out there.

Getting to see Jen‘s reaction for the original 1995 Toy story was amazing. Especially since Toy story was Pixar‘s first 100% full CG movie if I’m not mistaken. Holden‘s reactions reminded me of how I reacted when I was a little kid after watching the movie and Jen‘s reaction was 100% my first reaction when watching the movie for the first timehope she loves the rest of the movies and I hope you guys are ready for Toy story 5

You're right, but it's more impressive than just being Pixar's first. This was the first CG animated feature film. Some 2D films had used 3D elements, and Pixar in particular had some CG shorts, but nothing like this.

Out of the songs in this movie (before anyone says it, I know there aren't a lot of them), my favorite is "You've Got A Friend In Me" Side note: So many comedy legends/comedic actors in this movie Tom Hanks-Woody (I also love him in the movie Splash, with Daryl Hannah as his mermaid love interest) Tim Allen-Buzz Lightyear (I also love his portrayal of Santa in the Santa Clause movies) Jim Varney-Slinky Dog Don Rickles-Mr. Potato Head John Ratzenberger-Hamm Wallace Shawn-Rex Annie Potts-Bo Peep (She's also best known as Janine Melnitz in Ghostbusters and as Sheldon Cooper's grandmother in the sitcom Young Sheldon)

John Lasseter (director) used to work for Disney before Pixar. He tried convincing the old guard at Disney Animation that computer animation was the way to go. The previous head basically, said something along the lines, that if it doesn't save money, then it's not worth it. But they gave Lasseter the chance to show its potential in "The Brave Little Toaster" which contained a combination of computer-generated graphics and traditional Disney hand-drawn animation. He was let go after this was completed. Didn't Toy Story have bloopers in the credits? Also, a couple jokes that might have been missed: The Binford Toolbox was a reference to Tim "The Toolman" Taylor's sponsor in Home Improvement. The legs toy combined with the hook is a reference that adults would get.

I was fortunate enough to go on holiday to Disney World when I was young around the time this movie came out. We stayed in Dixie Landings resort (since renamed), one day we had been out all day at one of the parks and came home to "catch" all the toys spread around the room up to no good. The house keepers spent the time and effort to add just that extra touch of magic. Great memory.

Seeing how it's Christmastime, it's worth mentioning that there was a 1986 Christmas special made by Jim Henson called The Christmas Toy, about toys coming to life when their owners aren't around, and how they fret being replaced by the newest toy. The plot is so remarkably similar to Toy Story that you wonder if the Pixar people were involved in The Christmas Toy's development, if they wholesale ripped off its story for Toy Story, or if it was possibly just a crazy coincidence. But since both are now owned by Disney, it's not like any lawsuits are ever gonna happen over it.

Her not seeing Toy Story isn’t anymore shocking than him not seeing the Mask from 1994

Fun fact I learned recently in an interview with Tom Hanks that Tom Hanks brother did all the voice over for Woody for the Toy Story toys and video games.

These are gonna be great. You should watch the "bloopers" too, it was a really cool feature they used to add to the movies.

I went to school with a kid who was just like Sid: he'd cut his toys up with an old electric Erector Set motor with a big gear on it for a sawblade. He'd melt them down, break them into pieces, whatever struck his twisted fancy. I don't know what became of him; probably in prison. Or maybe practicing Law. 'Toy Story' originated a Pixar tradition: the YO truck. It has had appearances in every movie since, usually background cameos, even in movies that take place in worlds without cars.

People say that the garbage man in Toy Story 3 was Sid… but I don’t know if that’s true

@@nsasupporter7557 I heard that, but I haven't found definite evidence of it. Some day I'll sit down and watch it really closely and find out for sure.

I always loved the concept of this movie. Why are my toys never where I left them? I think we all experienced this as kids. After watching this movie I know why. So fantastic.

Actually, Sid does have a dad but you barely see him, he sits sleeping on an armchair in the living room where Buzz discovers the TV commercial of the Buzz Lightyear action figure. Some fans speculate that Mr. Philips mistreats Scudd hence why he left when he noticed his master snoring, but I don't believe it. He just heard his masters snoring and thought it was just him and left. You can see in the yard that he is the kind of man that gets tempted by the companies that sells home builindg materials and he starts projects like doing a sprinkler system but doesn't get around to finish it so it stays half-finished (these are comfirmed by John Lasseter and the gang on the audio commentary on the DVD and Blu-rays). Consindering how mom shouts after Sid when he misbehaves, it hints at that Mr. and Mrs. Philips are not great parents unlike Andy's mom (and dad, it is speculated that he's dead as he probably had Woody as his favorite toy and he inherited it from his dad and therefore Woody have a lot sentimental value to him), hence why Sid is such a messed up kid. Joe Ranft and his brother Jerome (who also works at Pixar as a scultor of character models that get scanned into the computer) used to break their toys as kids, such one time they dropped a cinder block on a Tonka Truck and it got crushed unlike the commercial which said could carry a huge rock (you know, commercials often exaggerate). There was also a Pixar animator that like Sid, used to take apart toys and put them together in a weird faschion, he became an inspiration for Sid.

Ahh memories… I remember my mom got me a Woody for Christmas, but couldn’t find buzz until Easter.

The whole idea for this movie is almost a complete copy of an even older made-for-TV movie called The Christmas Toy. Toys come to life when everyone leaves the room, the favorite doll gets jealous of the new "action warrior" doll that arrived as a Christmas gift and doesn't know she's a toy. Produced by the Jim Henson Company.
