For the whole franchise, I'm pretty sure the scenes where Cruise is climbing up a cliff or the side of buildings, hanging off the side of an airplane taking off and climbing a rope up to the helicopter, etc. are done with wires they can edit out or make invisible. Like Mission: Impossible III, I couldn't just have this video playing in the background while I work. I had watch along. Fallout is my favorite. Each Mission movie upped the stakes in terms of gravitas of the mission and the level of danger in the stunts performed by Tom Cruise. It's incredible the man is still alive. Yes, he did the HALO (high-altitude, low open) jump in the beginning while performing with a diving stunt team - he is the first actor to ever do so. Yes, he did hang from the payload and climb the rope to the bottom of the chopper, fell, then climbed again with a special harness specifically designed to be carried in the underbelly of the chopper. He also flew the chopper during the chase scene and was harnessed in the seat for the flips and crashes shown on a soundstage. The motorcycle chase was also done by Cruise including the roundabout in Paris... done with practical effects with Cruise actually weaving through that traffic (insane). The jumping across buildings was done by Cruise and the part where he nearly misses the jump and climbs up from the side is where Cruise broke his foot. The limp shown on film as he runs passed the camera is the take where it broke, but Cruise opted to keep going and continue filming (savage). I could go on with the free climbing, bathroom fight sequence and car chase, but all it does is add to my respect to Cruise's dedication in wanting to bring that realism to his action sequences. I can't wait for Dead Reckoning.

@jaycee945 - Agree. Also, especially if you have been working in London. It gives a bit a different vibe at this point. The palces that Tom run through in London - I've been working next to them for a long time (St Paul's Cathedral for example and more). It was the same for me with Tomb Rider (the one with Alicia Vikander, not Angelina Jolie). At some point she is running via a small park. Hell, I've been eating lunch there for some time, on one of the benches, again - close to the St. Pauls station this time, St. Martin's Le Grand Street (in the Postman's Park, pretty much have been there every day at some point), as I've been working in the building next to that location (nah, it wasn't Investec bank, which is just the opposite of that, but there is a very nice pub next to it too :)). Note: I don't work there anymore, but I've spent probably 2 years there as a contractor. All between St.Pauls Station and Bank Station (close to all usuall places: Bank of England, London Stock Exchange, various banks such as Bank of America or even Goldman Sachs office).
Tom was wired in for the under the chopper stunts. All the chopper chase and bomb defusing was filmed in New Zealand down around Lake Wanaka - lots of chases of various types have been filmed down there over the years. If I remember correctly, being a rated helicopter stunt pilot takes something like 3yrs + normal pilot training. (I pretty sure that's what the Director said in a making of video). Tom crammed it all into 6 weeks or 6 months - something insane like that. I know we've all seen the trailer for the next film where Tom jumps a bike off a cliff and parachutes to safety - I get a feeling that it's not even the biggest stunt of the film and they're keeping it top secret til the film is released!

I'm right there with you about the cliff jump not being the biggest stunt for part 1 or 2! I believe Christopher Mcquarrie even said (in the cliff jump video) "if you thought this stunt was big, just wait until you see what we have planned for the next one". Something close to that lol. I mean, bigger than the helicopter stunts?, the cliff jumps?, 4min breath hold during underwater stunt? (6min was during training and he wasn’t moving), hanging off the side of a huge cargo plane? Climbing, then running down the tallest building in the world??? If that's the case, then I CAN"T WAIT to see what he's going to do in Dead Reckoning Pt.2 😁😁😁

For the skydive: Yes, Cruise did HUNDREDS of what are known as HALO jumps. High Altitude, Low Open jumps. They shot it over Dubai, then digitally added in clouds and Paris later. There is a 3rd skydiver wearing a helmet mounted camera with a rig so he can see what he's filming as he jumps. They digitally added in Cavil's face in post as well. But the sky dive, was all real. All of those stunts were done in air, really falling. Tom Cruise is undeniably dedicated to getting the most amazing shots. The broken leg: 26:30 That jump, Cruise's right leg hit the building at a bad angle and snapped the bones. There's a slow motion shot of it on the Graham Norton show that shows it... it's gnarly. He says he knew it was broken badly instantly, but he climbed up and ran off camera finishing the shot. So that limp when he runs off, he's got a horrific leg break. They had to halt filming for a few months while he healed and PTed enough to get back to filming. Very Tom Cruise to finish the shot. The helicopter: Yes he has a harness, especially for the long drop off the rope. But it's minimal. And still very dangerous. And no... that was not on a set. Tom Cruise spend thousands of hours getting certified to not only fly a helicopter solo, but aerobatically. So that the camera could be positioned to show him flying, alone, in a real helicopter. Just to ramp the tension way up. Again, Tom Cruise giving it all for the audience.

The original Mission Impossible TV series was from the 1960's and had Jim leading with Ethan as his second. The second Mission Impossible TV series was in the 1980's and continued the adventures of Jim's team (used same actor from the original TV series). These recent Mission Impossible Movies where Jim starts off and then Ethan carries on with the team after the first movie and Jim's betrayal is a direct continuation of the both TV series.

I was waiting for AT&T to thwart your plans. Then I remembered you were smart and bought the dvd set. These movies are worth the shelf space.

No Dead Reckoning reaction? Or did you both see it in theaters?

Tom Cruise's stuntman gets so bored that he has time to create successful comedies like Zookander and Tropic Thunder. If I know then I know 🤣🤣🤣

17:39 tom cruise probably made sure so include those kneepads after he scrapped his knee while riding in the last movie. you can see a part where he's riding extremely close to the ground while turning/weaving, his knee hits the ground and he pulls it up very quickly. never broke character though lol

The sky dive was the one stunt Henry Cavil couldn't do because he had no training. That was his stunt double. You see his stunt double again later. The guy Tom throws out of the helicopter was Henry's stunt double for the sky dive. But Henry did all his stunts aside from the sky dive. From that movie on, Henry has done 100% of all his own stunts in his movies and TV shows.

The shot you see of Tom jumping accrross to another building and just making it, he broke his ankle. When you see him limping off, that is with his broken ankle.

In one of the jumps on the roof tops, the one that ethan bangs against the building, tom cruise shattered his ankle and keep doing the scene 'til he colapsed.production stopped untill he could shoot again.

Somebody probably already mentioned this, but Tom Cruise is one of the executive producer on these films so he can literally do WHATEVER he wants (including these crazy ass stunts). That being said, of course there have to be some kind of safety measures in place for some of the stunts, but those helicopter scenes...insane! Glad you guys are all caught up. Newest Mission Impossible is very close to being 3 hrs. CANNOT WAIT

2:41 Now there’s an idea. Wouldn’t be a bad idea Holden if you can put together a list of all the movies you and Jen seen in your own time so hopefully requests will decrease or even stop coming in.
