There are 5 different Terminator timelines stemming off of T2. . * The T3 timeline where T1 and T2 are in continuity (which showed that Judgment Day still happened, just via a different method due to alterations in the timeline). *The Salvation timeline where T1 and T2 are in continuity (T3 technically does not happen as Salvation was meant to be a "soft reboot". There was no T-X or T-850 and the government doesn't cause Skynet as seen in T3. Skynet is still a result of Cyberdyne as T2. With that said, minor story elements from T3 do make it into the Salvation timeline though, such as the new Judgment date seen in T3 due to time alterations from T2 and Kate becoming John's wife. *The Genisys timline where T1 and T2 technically "were" in continuity before the time travel shenanigans (as depicted in Genisys itself) erased T1 and T2 for a new timeline. Neither T3 or Salvation happened. *The Dark Fate timeline where T1 and T2 happen, but Judgment Day still happens due to Legion rising in Skynet's place. T3, Salvation and Genisys do not happen. *The Sarah Connor Chronicles timeline where T1 and T2 happen, but Judgment Day is revealed to still happen on an alternate date. T3, Salvation, Genisys and Dark Fate do not happen.

I think it's cool that James Cameron took some pieces from the previous Terminator movies and put them in this one. Like the liquid-solid hybrid terminator from Terminator 3, the human-terminator or augmented human from Terminator salvation and the "Old Arnold" terminator from Terminator Genesys. Kind of dangerous for an AI to leave a terminator just walk away and go rogue instead of making a self destruct switch after its mission is over. Imagine if in the future: a terminator kills a target, just a random squad leader and then walks away and joins the resistance. Also Skynet literally sent a terminator in the past where humans could capture it, disassemble it and learn how to destroy it. Thus making humans even more of a threat. So a self destruct switch makes much more sense then whatever switch T2 had in the Director's Cut. James Cameron is a brilliant director but even he is vulnerable to plot holes and pride to ignore negative comments about his vision/ideas. Someone could have told him: "So mr. Cameron what if a Terminator is captured by humans? Won't that prove Sarah's madness is real and that time travel is real?" CAMERON : " No, because that's not the story."
@xsanguine8 Жыл бұрын
@@danhair Could be that the reason there is no self-destruct, is as a backup for T2, any left-over Terminators _will_ be found and learned from to make a Skynet emerge, whether they succeed or fail the mission.

@@danhair In T2 Arnie says it cant self-terminate. I assume it's part of the core programming the same was the read-only chip in their heads. Tho it makes no sense that a read-only chip in terminators head would go read/write just because it completed it's mission.

It's implied that by fulfilling his programming, and that Skynet was gone, "Carl" became free and grew beyond his programming (which is a well worn trope in A.I. based ficition). He also become purposeless but kept existing and since they cannot self terminate, he kept growing and learning. It also ties to the theme of this movie and the Cameron led Terminators: no fate but the one we make (which is something 3, 4 and 5 contradicted)... Even a machine grew to chose its own fate after finding itself purposeless... And it chose empathy.

@@jessemoore7081 For the sake of having fun, Im going to theorize that Skynet actually thought about what needed to happen with the Terminator if he fulfilled his mission. Option 1) Stay still, turn off. This is a risk for Skynet as humanity could pick it up. While its true that humanity has technology to create Skynet, doesn't mean the technology behind the terminators is accessible to humans. Option 2) Self-terminate. This would be the best option IMO but since for some reason they cant self destruct then this is out of the question. 3) Stay in society until Skynet is created, then Skynet would pick it up again in the future. The T-800 could easily be just programmed to think he has conscience or to say that he understands humans, but as soon as Skynet appears they take over again. Ultimately, while in Terminator 4 they show them being manufactured at large numbers, I still think it could be worth keeping the T for themselves. Option 4) Kill as many humans as possible until defeated. This could even follow some strategical pattern. But this could be considered an existential threat to Skynet if the T-800 is very successful at killing humans.

The whole "why is he a good terminator now" is explained in T2's director cut. The terminator says they have an inhibitor chip that skynet implants in each of them that prevents them from learning new things. John and Sarah opened up the terminators head and disabled his inhibitor chip, which is why he grew more human like, was able to learn human emotions and behavior. In this one, the terminator completed his mission. Either his inhibitor chip malfunctioned over the 20+ years or due to him completing his mission it was no longer needed and turned off on its own, something had to happen to it or else his programming would NEVER allow him to help Sarah Connor by sending her those texts. Either way during those 20+ years he was able to learn human behavior and eventually came to have a family, which I guess you could say sorta became his new mission.
@Raivo_K Жыл бұрын

The thing about Terminators learning to be good can be complicated because of a deleted scene which may or may not be canon. There is a deleted scene in T2 where Sarah and John open up the Terminator's Head and take out a chip which they reset. This allows him to learn more and faster about how to be human which allows his CPU to simulate human emotions better. He doesn't become a human exactly, but his CPU begins to mimic human emotions so well that it's almost indistinguishable from the real thing. But if you take into account that the scene was deleted, meaning that those rules don't apply going forward into Dark Fate, then you just have to take it on faith that with his mission objective complete ( killing John Connor) it was like scratching a task off a white board leaving a clean slate for his CPU to 'evolve' into something more human because of his interactions with our species. However, I find this a bit hard to believe because I feel like they would have programed the Terminator to just continue the overall mission of making sure Skynet comes into existence and takes over the world. If anything he would start killing off other who would become part of the resistance and then just find a quite shed to sit in and wait until judgment day arrives and then continues to serve Skynet from there.

Not to mention that no matter what the moment anything goes back in time it seems to cause a ripple effect where it apparently postpones Judgement Day anyways.
@theaikidoka Жыл бұрын
Yes, this is a problem with Terminator timelines (not necessarily all time travel). In order for ANY Terminator story, Skynet MUST be created and start the war. When it does, or if it wins afterwards are mutable, but the mere existence of a Terminator, Resistance etc means that the war happens. It's a closed loop. For me, that's why the end of T3 was satisfying, if not happy - none of the events of 1 or 2 could happen if the future was changed, so John Connor DOESN'T prevent Judgement Day. He just survives it.
@erickleefeld48834 ай бұрын
This is exactly what I loved so much about the movie. The never-ending cycle means that, as Carl told Sarah, “We all can change the future, every second, by every choice that we make” - he learned that from her example. It means that there will always be a doomsday just around the corner, but that we can keep making a choice to stop it. That’s not just a message about killer robots in a sci-fi future. It’s about every great danger we’re all facing in our real world. And it’s also the perfect ending to the entire series.

The T-800 was always a learning machine. Did you guys forget that in T2 that terminator sorta grew a little bit of a conscious at the end when he told John he now knows why humans cry but he can never do it himself. Now give that 20 years of AI learning for a Terminator with no more mission objective, is it that unbelievable that he then understood the pain of lost by Sarah? He wasn't crying or anything like a human but he understood the emotion and he wrote his own mission objective to right that wrong. And as for Legion, when they stopped Skynet they didn't kill off every ambitious scientist and engineers in the world, there will ALSO be someone who is arrogant enough to try and create an AI and think that they could control it. And they would have no knowledge of the whole Skynet thing so it's not that they would know the consequences so of course sooner or later a different version of AI doomsday would come. But wouldn't it be way more likely that the machine would just turn itself off since it had no purpose anymore? Since its the same AI that decided to kill all humans, its weird that the exact copy of that AI decided to try something different.

And while John's relationship was great in the short span of a few days don't you think this T-800 couldn't find that in someone else in the span of 20 years? Let me see if I can explain this for those of you who are confused. In terminator to the theatrical cut, Arnold says that he learns by observing humans. And we see John Connor teach him how to do stuff, the Terminator, who calls himself Carl in this one, is that times 20 years James Cameron even said, we had seen a terminator programmed to be bad, we had seen one program to be good, so he wanted to do a terminator that made his own choice. That learned for 20 years and decided what he wanted to do. It was the only way to not repeat himself from the first two. Which is why? In my opinion, this is the real T3. And this is the movie we should’ve gotten 2003. Cameron was going to be a producer and writer on that one, but he left the project. He also wrote the original script treatment for this one meaning he wrote the story. Terminator, three rise of the machines was a cash grab, I was looking for something more than, “judgment day is inevitable.” This makes more sense, that Skynet never comes to be. And a different AI takes over. As much as I like this movie, and as much as I consider it, the official T3, a part of me is happy that it bombed because they won’t make a follow up one and ruin it. In my opinion This movie bombed because of franchise fatigue. People were tired of all the cash grab pieces of garbage they made. This is the movie we should’ve gotten in 2003.

I think the time machine puts you into a Schrodinger's type situation, like once you plug the time machine in, every time that you thought about turning it on, it was actually turned on, just not in your timeline. So when Skynet was plotting all the times where John might be vulnerable, and only sent *one* Terminator back, all the other possible Skynet timelines also sent just one but now in real time you are getting a Terminator in every possible location.

There were also terminators sent back in time to complete various other missions that would help bring skynet into fruition as well. If any of these terminators found out who John was their mission program would immediately change to eliminate John. One makes sure a traffic camera system in the future becomes the eyes of skynet, another takes the form of a US army officer and safeguards a shipment of metal that will later become future terminators (its in that episode where it shows what is supposed to happen when a terminator completes its mission). And then there are terminators who like the TX in T3 are sent back to terminate other important people who will aid the human race in some big way in the future.

What I really enjoyed about Carl: This character was a composite of every previous Terminator iteration that Arnold had done, from the emotionless killer to the robot that learns the value of human life. And once the killer robot learned the value of human life, he then understood what he’d done to John and Sarah, and he discovered some concept of guilt and a need to make up for it. It was the perfect final role for Arnold to have in the series. For a bit more explanation, two important conditions happened: Carl killed his target John Connor in 1998, but Skynet and the entire war (which were supposed to happen in 1997) were no longer there. He explained to Sarah that he no longer had any orders, so he instead spent the next 20 years blending in with humanity. And the longer he did that, the more his actual mindset changed. This also presented a really interesting philosophical paradox, when Dani asked him whether he had loved his family, after they just drove off: “Not like a human can. For many years, I thought it was an advantage. It isn’t.” He said he couldn’t truly feel human emotions - and he was clearly very sad and lonely about that! That whole exchange reminded me of another classic movie quote: “Now I know that I have a heart, because it’s breaking.”

Her look of physical desperation in this movie is partly great acting, and partly real. She was on an absolutely grueling diet and exercise regimen for this movie, and was feeling every bit of the physical strain. Also fun fact, her last day of shooting was for the first scene we met her, when Grace arrived in in our time, beat up the cops, and stole that young Mexican couple’s clothes and car. (Maybe a movie production and time travel have some things in common.) She also refused an offer to wear skin-colored costume underwear, and insisted on actually filming her fight scene in the nude. By comparison, Arnold was naked for the T1 scene where he kills the punks for their clothes, but he wore some kind of trunks for the T2 scene with the extended fight at the biker bar.

For Jen’s confusion - Karl was another terminator sent back as a redundancy (one of many) it arrived AFTER the events of Terminator 2 where events had been changed and Sarah had destroyed Skynet before it was built. But it still came from the original future (as Karl said to the new terminator) he came from a now deleted timeline. After he killed 12 year old John, his mission was completed, he had no further mission, but Terminators cannot swlf-terminate (as said in T2) so it maintains its other objectives which include fitting in and appearing human for camouflage. He met a woman with a child and used them for this camouflage. But would realise from news and media that skynet no longer existed. The T-800 is a form of AI, its programming makes it emulate humans for camouflage, so this emulation programming made him start to question who he was since technically he shouldno longer exist. He also essentially becomes a father and cares about his son, realising he took that from sarah, so that’s how he grew a conscience as they put it - his emulation gave him freedom from his programming and emulated emotions of care for his family and as a result guilt for killing john and doing that to sarah - he didn’t learn love, but he did kind of learn empathy. So he started sending sarah details to help her on her mission of revenge.

The issue I have is a terminator can be sent from a deleted future why can't a protector also be sent to stop it from that deleted timeline. I can accept these terminators having come through but surely in that timeline they also sent people to stop them. What did the resistance look at the records and go "nah we only need to send a person to these 3 points to protect john. Those other 1,135 terminators will be fine."

I think Jen maybe confusing the fact that all of these terminators are the same model, but each one is a seperate unit off of the assembly line. In T1, that terminator was sent back in time to kill Sarah, at that particular point they had also sent multiples of that model to other varying points in time. In T2 John sent back another of that same model, but its programming was different, which showed us that it can learn and grow. In Dark Fate, the same type of unit that killed John, had completed it's mission, but as we saw in T2 it would have been able to adapt to a regular lifestyle. There are lots of reasons why these movies don't make sense, but I think that this actuall does.

So from what I understand there was alot of rewrites or was it reshoots with this film? Originally the Main Girl was supposed to be one of John's Followers/Second In Command. Legion was supposed to be the Virus that actually infected Skynet. Legion/Skynet then made a deal with some of John's Followers that they could live but would have to be turned into cyborgs/Rev-9s. They then betray and kill Future John and the Main Chick escapes and becomes the second main Resistance Leader who helps fight back against Legion/Skynet. So they set one of the Rev-9s/Traitors to the Past to kill her after having already set back and succeeded in killing off Young John Conner. I feel like they should have kept that backstory cause at least it stilll ties into Skynet and John Connor from the future and it makes the new Terminator interesting because it was originally a human being who turned traitor. Also I would have liked to actually see more of Arnold being a normal guy with his human family. I feel like they gave him interesting parts like in Genesys and this but did nothing with it. Part of me kinda wants them to do another film that ties together Salvation, Genesys and Dark Fate together to wrap up any or all loose ends. But we all know it would never be good.

I really enjoy Dark Fate as it is, but I would have enjoyed that story as well. There have been plenty of interesting takes on an alternate Terminator 3 (including the trilogy of Infiltrator novels that came out right before the third movie), and they all have one thing in common: they're more thematically interesting than T3. If I could jump back into a time displacement sphere and go back to 2003 to do a page-one script rewrite, I think I'd run with an idea introduced in Dark Fate: the notion that Skynet sent back a few more Terminators as contingency plans. I'd stick with the idea that Judgment Day was indeed stopped, and these infiltration units would work to restore a future that had been wiped out of existence by weaving themselves into society and influencing the development of weapons technology and AI. Perhaps John could be working for a tech company that just happens to be run by one of these displaced Terminators. John thinks that he is keeping an eye on artificial intelligence advancements to ensure that history doesn't repeat itself, but he's ironically contributing to the dark future that he once prevented. And this time, the machines are happy to keep him alive and working for them. When he inevitably discovers what's happening, the Terminators begin a more grassroots war on humanity, causing major accidents through automated systems (subway trains, planes, passenger ships, what have you). It then becomes a race to stop them from getting their hands on the nuclear codes. A story like that would have felt more timely in 2003. T3 kinda-sorta touched on Y2K fears, but it did little with it. Even worse, it totally neglected the fact that international terrorism was the real fear during the Bush Jr. era, not mutually-assured destruction. The idea that your friend or coworker could be trying to bring about the end of the world would have been right at home in the paranoia of the early 2000s. And they still could've ended it with Judgment Day--that's the one thing that T3 actually got right in concept (if not execution).

The thing with the T800's new "purpose" is kind of iffy. Initially, the T800s were created with the sole purpose of single target missions. Even though they were designed to work with neural-net processors, they were set to "read-only", to prevent them from learning too much and perform undesired self core-reprograming and thus, reducing the risk of them disobeying the initial directives. Even the one in T2 was in read-only mode and there is a deleted scene where Sarah removes the CPU and sets it to "read-write". My best guess, is that after a "read-only" T800 fulfills its mission, it becomes "dormant", in the sense that it does minimum learning and interaction with the environment, but has no direct purpose. It is still unclear how one would fit into our society, taking into consideration that it cannot self-terminate and cannot be reprogrammed. I suppose it might just go off the grid and "live" until the nuclear battery runs out. Note that the T800s were build for assassination missions for the 80's, so their core programming includes human anatomy, combat, weapons, tactics, strategic plays, knowledge about machine architecture etc, but i guess the core-programming can be customized depending on the timeline you want them to go to. In the end, It would make more sense that a "read-write" T800 would achieve almost-human consciousness, because its CPU is open to learning and can self-program.

I have not got to the end of the video yet but I wanted to comment. In Terminator 3 the Terminator that is sent back is the one that killed John in the future. He was reprogrammed and sent back to protect John by his wife who was played by Claire Danes in the past. The main issue with that storyline is Judgement Day still happens and John Connor is the one who leads the resistance to beat the machines. Dark fate is suggesting that at the end of T2 Skynet is defeated and Judgment Day does not happen but there is still a Terminator in the past which later kills John and becomes Carl because he has no purpose. I think the problem that Jen is having is the fact that the Terminator becomes Carl but that is very plausable when you consider that Skynet causes judgement day because it became self-aware. There's no reason to think that a machine programed by Skynet cannot also become self aware.

It's a case of the Missus overthinking things. In the theatrical release of T2, it's explicitly said that the Terminator learns and adopts human behavior by being exposed to humans. Here, this T-800 fulfilled its objective, and was continuously exposed to humanity. He fell along with Alicia, and in so doing, became her and her son's protector. Along the way, he was continually learning and adapting--becoming more human. That's why, when Grace skeptically asked if he grew a conscience, he said it was of a sort. He didn't actually magically grow a conscience; he became more human, which he was _designed_ to do. It really isn't complicated if one can keep oneself from overthinking it.

I liked Dark Fate a lot more than most people did. In part because the win in Terminator 2 was allowed to stand - even though John died, Skynet was straight-up prevented. I could have done with Legion and its future being a bit more different from Skynet's, but still. I believe the terminator could have "evolved" since it is a computer designed to learn to asset threats. It could after it completed it's base function, find a new purpose. Then with a family and civilization it could compute the importance of people protecting other people, such as family, without completely understanding why they do. Like the one protecting John siad "I know now why you cry" and then begin computing things through that format.

Terminators are neither good nor bad, they are just machines programmed to complete specific tasks. The T-800 Terminators are a learning infiltration machine that are designed to blend into society, and this movie explored what such a machine would do once it had completed its mission, and because Skynet no longer exists to provide any further instructions it learned to think for itself. Carl gave itself a new mission to protect this family and learned the value of life, growing a conscious, blending into society as per its design. I wouldn't call what he is now 'emotional', more like understanding.

The one major problem this movie has, in terms of continuity with T2, is that no way the Terminator from T2 "Uncle Bob" would have asked to self terminate in the end, if it knows everything about Skynet, then he/it would have known there were other Terminators sent to kill John, so his mission to protect him would not have been completed yet. T2 wrapped everything so perfectly that by trying to make direct sequels just doesnt work because they would stopped that original timeline. However there is a theory that sys no matter how much you mess with time it would self correct and the events happen no matter what ie killing Hitler as a youth would not have prevented WW2 since someone else would have taken his spot. Salvation had the right idea but they messed it up. If they had mapped out a trilogy giving us the war vs the machines starting with the origin of Skynet, Judgement Day and the first battles vs the machines in Pt1, the first victories vs the machines and rise of John Connor in Pt2 and the final events leading up to the T-800 going back in time for Pt3 that would have been better IMO.

What I Found Information T-850 (referred to as T-101 in Terminator 3) Physically identical to the T-800, the T-850 has some significant upgrades: one of its basic subroutines is understanding human psychology, and it was also able to bypass the original its programming and operate independently while fulfilling its mission objectives. Based on this, it could work well according to the movie when in idle mode.

I don’t know how else to say it so I’ll just say it: I think Jenn’s opinion that just because the Terminator is a machine it can’t have feelings shows a lack of imagination. Not to mention continuity. Didn’t the T-800 in ‘T2’ begin demonstrating emotions after having its CPU switched to read/write? And that occurred after only a couple of days. Karl had decades to grow emotionally. After all, the A.I. is a sentient machine, self-aware, and a learning computer. It seems like it’s natural state is to grow and evolve which would cover all territories of being . . .alive. (just like Johnny5)

If what you say is true then why did that Termiantor leave John to be killed by another Terminator just 3 months or whatever later if it knew that Skynet was sending a dozen other Terminators? I mean, Carl who is the same Model as Bob knew that so presumably Bob also knew that and knew that other terminators were being sent. So what happened?
@GuardianOwl Жыл бұрын
@@danhair Why would the “Uncle Bob” Terminator know? He was captured by the humans likely prior to the mission to attack the base with the time displacement equipment. The only reason Carl knows is because he was sent back to kill and so has the most up to date information. It’s the same reason capturing a random soldier on patrol wouldn’t give you knowledge of that country’s special ops missions, that random solider wouldn’t have that info.

In Terminator 2 (theatrical cut), the terminator says that the more contact it has with humans, the more it learns. At the end, it says "I know now why you cry, but it's something I can never do." Even Sarah says in her closing narration "If a terminator can learn the value of human life, maybe we can to." That terminator, despite being programmed to be John's protector, was still an unfeeling machine at the start. It was ready to kill the two jocks in the parking lot before John stopped it, but by the end of the movie, it had gained an understanding of feelings and human values. If a terminator can change that much after spending just a couple days with humans, it's not that much of a stretch to believe that this terminator turned out the way that it did after spending 20 years living among humans.

@S.m1115 Жыл бұрын
The thing about terminator's movies is that they're wrong from the beginning. Time is a law of the reality we live in, not a tunnel. You can alter the time passing through any object by changing the speed in which atoms move on it (which has been tested already) But you cannot send any object through time, that's impossible. The closest thing you can do is sending a object to a parallel reality which haven't reached your present. But because this object traveled,that reality split into a completely different universe. Is funny how 'end game' and 'what if?' actually got it right,even if they continue calling it "time travel". So,the last two 'terminator' are the only two accurate.

@blaketfg9374 Жыл бұрын
32:50 I think you misunderstood. There is only 1 model 101 terminator. They turn humans into terminators so unless Carl has a lot of identical siblings there is only 1. The thing is everytime time travel happens the future changes no matter what so when the 101 fails at one event the future changes and they send it to a different point instead. Time is relative so in the past it looks like multiple 101s but in the future there is only a single one.

I feel like salvation, genysis and this all had some decent elements but none of them are remotely coherent or full packages. A film with the tone of salvation, maybe the timeline meddling of genysis and the rev 9 dual terminator of dark fate could be very good
@matthewschafer6359 Жыл бұрын
In T2 Arnold says terminators are thinking machines designed to learn and adapt, but when terminators are sent in missions alone their processors are switched to read only so they don't develop too many of their own ideas. The only reason the T2 Arnold could learn, bond with John, and become human like was because they deactivated Arnold and turned the read only setting on his processor off. So, who did that to the Dark Fate Arnold? If his processor was set to read only he wouldn't have been able develop empathy and search for purpose.

In Terminator 2 Arnold Schwarzenegger had said to John Connor and Sarah Connor that the more he interacts with humans the more he learns...when Sarah was pulling the bullets out of him. That's why the T-800 blended in so well, over the decades, after he accomplished his mission to kill John. Technically the t-800 would have no reason to be hostile after accomplishing his mission. It's not so confusing if you remember key dialogue from the previous James Cameron Terminator films. A lot of people were angry with dark fade because John Connor died, even though it's already been said in the previous films that there is no fate but what we make and the future is not set. The fact that Legion is the new Skynet goes back to what the t-800 replied to John, when John asked, "we're not going to make it are we?" And the t-800 responded, "it is in your nature to destroy yourselves". So basically if it's not one thing, it's another that will destroy Humanity. Terminator dark fate is definitely my third favorite though
