At 74 I'm a worn-out hippy. I managed to live through and love the sixties. A fantastic time in my life. I still get the rush when I listen to sixties and seventies music now. I have no time for rap music or the boring music of today. In today's virus troubles we need something to give us a lift. I am sure there is still plenty of talent in the singers of today, they just seem to have lost their way musically.
@saintgeorge67063 жыл бұрын
I feel the same way. I'm 63 and detest hip-hop and modern music. Music of the past lifted people up and made a deep and lasting positive impression on their lives. I feel sorry for the younger generation of today. Never having had that life enhancing experience.
@davidrichards68353 жыл бұрын
No, it’s just that things from your past always seem better as you tend to remember the nice bits - I’m 67 but I find musicians now are every bit as good as they ever were or ever will be: just open your ears to it all while taking pleasure from having a personal back catalogue that extends over your lifetime.
@saintgeorge67063 жыл бұрын

Yeah I’ve gone through this all philosophically and I disagree. It’s not just nostalgia. The whole world was on a crest of a wave that broke. There is still good music yes. But the overall dynamic of how good the mainstream was and how it effected culture is not the same. The amount of venues and the scenes it created. It was an incredible thing. There will never be another 60s counter culture, 70s madness and 80s MTV generation or 90s Seattle. It was a hell of a run in the 2nd half of the 20th century. That goes for all aspects of western culture. It’s just not as magical now. I’m just happy I got to experience most of it. Yes you can find good music now-but I can differentiate between nostalgia and the fact it’s just not as good. It’s not.

When I was in Aden in 1967, a street patrol of Royal Marines was in a dangerous area and we had Bullet up the spout ready for instant action. One of the lads tripped and put a round through his foot. At that time, Forces Favourites was a request show on BBC Radio played World Wide, on a Sunday. While he was in Hospital, it came on the Radio, " This a request for Marine +++++ in, R.A.F. Hospital Kormaskar in Aden. The song was "And all that I knew was the hole in my shoe was letting in water".😂😂😂

Traffic's first album "Heaven Is In Your Mind" is one of the best examples of tripping out with headphones. The speaker phasing is incredible, and the songs are connected (no dead space) thru sound sampling various cuts off the album. This is so subtle that it requires headphones, most people probably missed this trippy feature.

I love the sound of this song, especially the “letting in water“ echoey part. It reminds me of the Moody Blues song, “Nice to Be Here”, and Donovan’s “The Magpie”. All three are gentle and childlike. There was a reason we were called flower children. That’s the part of hippie culture I appreciated the most: the gentleness and innocence.

As a child from a very conservative family , this beautiful piece (along with songs from The Beatles, The Move, The Master's Apprentices & lots, LOTS more) provided a window into a world I very much wanted to inhabit. Music, literature and art shaped - and continue to shape - my adult life. Young musicians such as Traffic profoundly shaped what I listened to, read and heard and I will be forever thankful. Now - who WAS that child who provided the spoken middle break? I'm sure there's a story there that needs to be told! & yes, I still own my picture sleeve single of "Hole In My Shoe" - a treasured personal artefact.

It was the American version of Traffic's 1st album is of which there were we are least 4 separate realeases or versions in us and UK. It was titled Dear Mr Fantasy. I can't remember who they named as child. But the story was there. Interesting.one of the other realeases were called Heaven Is In Your Mind.

This brings back so many memories. Jimmy Capoldi used to live a few doors from my aunt on Battleton Road , Fairfield , Evesham. His younger brother , Phil, is/was the same age as me. Another great name is 60's/70's music from Fairfield was Luther Grosvenor. He played one of the meanest guitars around, but never got the recognition he deserved.

I do agree with what you are saying, however both bands weren´t what you would have called "mainstream beat" then. I was a young guitarist then and admired both bands and listening to Spooky Tooth´"Evil Woman" for the first (and not the last) time and Grosvenor´s mad mad guitar simply blew me away!

Luther and Art (Supernatural Fairytales album) were a big influence on Black Sabbath! And he also played in Mott the Hoople of course.

Cooke Codd I might be an old fart now but that music takes me right back to the fab sixties when the musicians were so inventive.that track is so evocative of the times we loved. The kids of today have no idea how great it was then. Music today all sounds the same or maybe I'm just stuck in a groove!

Disagree. I Iove the song but it sounded dated by 1968.

I saw them live in London in the late 60's & they were BRILLIANT A very underrated group in my opinion.

Even after all these years, those early flower, trippy, neo-psycheledic songs, as bands were transitioning from R&B into whatever it was that the '60s would morph into, are still the best. This song, Paper Sun, and especially No Face, No Name, No Number are some of my favorites from this period by Traffic.

This was the first single I ever bought, I was 13 and ordered it from our local electrical store, they also sold a few records, and I think had one listening booth, I am pleased to say I still have the single. Thanks so much for posting and all the info.

Ahh how beautiful, An Olympic studio one recording , Producer Jimmy Miller and perhaps Eddie Kramer ... valve microphones, totally analogue, four-track I imagine, absurdly compressed drums, A total joy to hear fifty-two years later, still magical; we lived through a wonderous time for music and being alive. xxx

this song played a key-role in my up-growing... also I was about 9 years old, this song was the threshold, stepping into the inner world of hippie, music, love and all the rest,, and never leaving afterwords....... there was something in the air in those days... like a releasing of light, you could allmost touch it, you knew, if you looked in the eyes of someone, immediately, if you could trust that person or not, those were heavenly days....

Yes. It was because the 60s were so s**t for most of us that this music happened. It really could not continue the way it was, with cruel, vindictive and violent school teachers (who should have been jailed) and miserable expectations of what our lives were going to be like.
@WS-16 жыл бұрын
If you don`t remember things that way , then ,you weren`t there , but to be fair the music was driven by the resultant rebellion .
