The Hole In The Ground (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) is bursting with rich treats from the imagination of Amon Tobin.
A film in audio/visual excerpts, each track has its own short selected from the visual explorations of Tobin’s alter ego Shy1 and musically we are teased with beguiling and frightening hints at what the story of this place we see might be.
It’s a collection of music and imagery playing with themes and deliberately incomplete narratives, inviting us to wonder; where is this place? What is the story of these characters?
The viewer is left enough space for their own imagination to begin to fill in the gaps.
It’s an enjoyably menacing process.
The perpetual undulation between hope and fear coursing through each and every minute of the EP’s 6 tracks.
Opening with the ominous, glittering Hole in the Ground with plaintive cries from the edges of the universe, Ghost of a Star brings a disturbing and delicate urgency through sound and visuals where we appear to be presented with the sculptural, modular construction of a Black Hole. A portent of what is to come or a playful game the Gods play to amuse themselves?
If we could intercept the conversations the machines are having then Wolves in the Yard is how they may sound. It builds and builds leaving us with an inkling that perhaps something that is not our friend is coming close.
Larkspur reveals a beautiful, biomechanical temple and its acolytes. But did they arrive with the vessels featured in the earlier Hole in the Ground film or do they worship them? Again the questions… What is this place? Who are these people?
Self Collider tantalises with elements of light, in sound and vision. A different climate suggests there is more than one tribe in this evolving world and there amongst the triumvirate of dancers is a character already familiar to Nomark devotees, Figueroa.
Celebration, ritual or necessity? The billowing choreography of Self Collider’s dancers is filled with an intense grace and a fierce determination etched onto the faces that we can see. As their dance comes to an end there is an enigmatic serenity in their eyes.
There’s something curiously optimistic and grand about Pale Tundra that keeps you guessing. A mighty rock looms large in an otherwise flat and ice encrusted landscape, as our view sweeps across this unnatural wonder your eyes are drawn by details you may not have noticed at first. Beneath the horse like rock paintings, are there really petrified faces trapped in the lines and shadows of the cliffs or is it just a pareidolic response?
Hole In The Ground (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) is a glimpse into the developing work of film score and story.

Hole In The Ground is part of a suite of tracks due for release by Amon Tobin later this year on Nomark Records. Each track will be accompanied by a short video film.
This could be Earth in the future, or in a prehistoric past.
Or it could be the rocky dust of a planet in another universe, where multidimensional creatures tease their way across the sky, stirring up the dirt and rocks below them, searching for prey.
Spiky, glittering, ominous.
There will be a lot of music from Amon Tobin in 2023. This is the first taste.

I don't really find this to be eerie, spooky, nightmarish... I think it's rather pessimistic, melancholic, hopeless in a very beautiful way. It's fitting to the doomsday zeitgeist of our current times (which may be considered a nightmare). I can see toward the end of the piece, that it gives "Alien" (franchise), "Half Life 2" vibes though.

I had a monumental experience the first and only time I played this. I was awake in bed scrolling , my wife asleep next to me. We had to get up soon, I needed to wake her up. I then saw this new from Amon only 2d old and pressed play as I woke her up. A few seconds in the glimmer of thought that flashed by as I was thinking the song might not be the best waking material, and yet I did not pause/ stop, as it's place in time right then was sealed. She was having a nightmare at the time I woke her, still in it's grips as she immediately began rapidly speaking of the details. The music played on, striking every cord as ominous as the events in her dream. She stopped at the point where I woke her, and the music paused also. Awake now, speaking more slowly, a recap of the dream now added with some interpretations, was augmented with its music with the timing to the second! She finished again, the music stopped. She was oblivious to the music during this only until the end when I explained what was going on, the time space equation fitting perfectly. Our conversation immediately began solving some issues that were preventing foreward progress with some simple answers that were there the whole time. An epic moment of life changing things showed itself at this specific time, I feel more connected than ever! Thanks Amon, the Word is the Will, and the Will is the Word. Peace.

Well... I'd say it really has more to do with the slow receding sea of Religious Opression, and obviously also by the swelling and flourishing of Secular and Scientific Knowledge and understanding. You see, the kind of people who weren't taught to, or that simply refuse to even _Attempt_ to comprehend of a universe or reality, as it is observable around us now, exactly like this, ..but without ANY form of "guiding/guarding" Higher-Order Mind, Will, and Power... like, they aren't going to just _give_ _up_ believing in Deities, Angels, Utopias in the Heavens, and Eternal Damnation below, some ppl NEED these ideas to feel like the world makes sense to them, so they just start treating hypothetical inter-dimensional entities, intelligent extraterrestrial species, Simulated Reality Admins or whatever the hot buzzword is that year, and rather gracelessly they begin substituting these more scientifically viable potential beings in the same old and familiar trappings and garments as the Old Gods they are replacing. It's progress, I'd say, but the spreading of anti-intellectualism and general distrust and unease boiling under the surface tension of society is definitely being orchestrated in ways completely antithetical to the Peace, Love, Generosity, Kindness, and Ethical Arguments made by the major modern World-Religions. So sad to observe such mental inflexibility and/or extremely "closed minds", however, _Some_ ppl seriously just can NOT even _Try_ to imagine what that Reality could be like, or that such a thing could even be theoretically _possible_ . Wallowing in their self-imposed absence of illumination like the blind cave-dwelling fish, having eyes to see and receive light, but being trapped in such Abyssal Darkness for an entire lifetime has robbed them of Sight itself. 〔
