My grandsons, 6 and 3, will be coming to our home, for Christmas, for the first time in two years! So, I am going all out with my Christmas theme this year that I call "Corny Christmas, No Shame" 😂🤣😂 Totally Tacky!! It will include all of the "no's" on your list, with the exception of the Santa toilet cover and glitter!! The grandsons will love all the goofy Santa's, snowmen, and mismatched colored lights everywhere!! 🎅 ☃️🦌 They are only young for a short time and I want them to remember how silly and fun their Grandma's house was at Christmas!! Now, I'm off to find Douglas Fir, the singing Christmas tree! 🎶🎄🎶 Cheers!! 🥂

I recently read the book "Cozy Minimalist Home: More Style, Less Stuff" by Myquillyn Smith. She talks all about this concept of decorating for seasons using the senses (sight, Taste, touch, smell, and sound). You have backed her up with he same concepts and it blows my mind. It has literally changed the way I decorate. I agree with buying seasonal textiles--using texture fur, linen, velvet--and greenery and then adding in Holiday music, scents, and food to make it feel festive.

The Jack Christmastized element never disappoints. He brings such WARM LIGHT. 😁 The hand towel SO TRUE! You stand there flicking water everywhere BUT the darn towel! Oh dear, those inflatables. So many neighbors around here are ditching traditional exterior Christmas lighting and going to just a yard full of giant inflatables. Then, during the daytime, they're collapsed all over the lawns just blowing in the wind. I'd love to see this trend die out and go back to traditional Christmas lights with maybe one or two other decor items.

I love your videos. Yes, I admit I used to be one of those people who had cute Christmas stuff all over the house, including the bathrooms (but never a Santa toilet seat and rug duo). Over the last few years I have given away, donated or thrown out much of my collection that filled 10 totes. Now I focus on greenery, candles, music and luxe winter pillows and throws. My winter decor lasts all winter, which can be several months in New England. NO more stress over putting out of packing up stuff. Just the tree ornaments, which I have upgraded recently.

Like you, I’ve been able to add to my silver, gold, white & copper glass bauble collection over the years. And I love my silver mercury ornaments, especially the Christmas trees. My husband on the other hand veers towards the gnomes and specifically reindeers with the comical expressions whenever we go out shopping… so I let him use 2 items in the study room this year!

I personally love Christmas dinnerware and use it all month long in place of my regular dishes! My favorite are the smaller plates that can be used for luncheon or desserts. The prettiest ones I purchased was over a decade ago at Williams Sonoma on an after Christmas sale. The brand is Burleigh and the design is Twilight Passage. They are made in England. I use those plates through to Valentine's Day since it is a wintry scene in a pinkish red color. I also like to buy decor that can be used all through winter!

I’ve been noticing myself doing the same sort of habit. Things that are overly themed are typically the things that become outdated the quickest. As you mentioned, the dollar can stretch further when buying with the mind frame of functionality and the flexibility per item. When I’m drawn to something, I’m asking myself, do I like it now for just now… or is it something I’ll love 3yrs from now. I know that may still be difficult to answer, but most of the time I end up leaving the item. It’s really helped me refine my shopping and overall home.

It may not be ‘cool’ or ‘trendy’ but I get out the Spode Christmas tree dishes every year-and just love switching out dishes for the holidays. Have my favorite two Amaryllis mugs for coffee-pull out the holiday cookbooks-and yes it’s a lot of work. But it’s beginning to feel like Christmas when those things come out of storage. No Christmas tree-but a huge poinsettia, a lighted wreath on the front door and we are set!
@claragoforth3645 Жыл бұрын
For Christmas dinnerware I think it all depends on your living situation - start with the classic year around serve ware set and then if you have more storage and based on your family traditions I think then you can add a specific holiday/seasonal set. I wouldn’t make a hard rule on that one but it depends on your family and lifestyle.

Agree with all except the mixed lights (sorry Jack). It’s like mixed metals - you either like it or you don’t. There has to be a balance of course, and I do not like the lights that have a bluish tone. You want a pure white and not one labelled icy (which is where you usually get into the blue tone). A bonus is that you can take down the warm lights after the holidays and leave the pure white for warm weather (on garden structures for instance). Balance the warm lighted focal points with the white focal points and/or blend them together on a tree. C’mon Jack! Give it a go haha.

Yes!! I don't do the theme things of any kind for the exact reason you mentioned - storage. Oh the glitter - it's even on Christmas cards. I do the glitter test - if I touch it and my hand has glitter on it, it doesn't come home. Such great suggestions. I'd rather put my money into high quality garlands and more winter staple items than strictly Christmas stuff.

I agree with you 100%. Other than our Christmas trees all our "Christmas decor" is winter decor: lots of greens and natural things like real paper white bulbs. And we leave it up for at least 2 months(Dec and January) as we have festive gatherings in January too. Now dishes: I do have a wintery greens set from Spode that I use all winter long and purchased some red plates and bowls from Crate & Barrel several years ago that make up a nice casual table. I love table scaping so that is what I enjoy making look special. You two are a hoot. I would love to know what and where you went in Europe and what took you there. It would make an interesting video.

I put my stuff up more mid-December and leave it up for the full 12 days of Christmas! I then use the "little-ing" technique to put it all away. We get a real tree so that goes first, but I love your idea of going more "winter" than glitzy holiday....all warm lights except in the basement family room, where I have a snowy winter theme and a white tree that is all about snow and ice!! I am guilty of the pillow things (love me some tartan plaid), but have switched to pillow covers and changing those instead of whole separate pillows. I have my great grandmother's china and use it...I use a christmas-y charger and pull out my fancier silverware....but I too am loving those Ralph Lauren plaid plates. Lastly, it is so nice to see a couple doing Christmas decor together. It's pretty much a one woman Christmas prep at my house!! (And the laughing fits are hilarious ...our family does the same thing. good for the soul!)

I purchased Lenox’s ‘Winter Greeting’ china pattern dinner plates for my mother about 22 years ago because she never had wedding china or crystal. They had a small home wedding in 1953 and she always missed not havng special, real china. She and my late father loved it! Over the years we’ve added pieces that are most useful for us to the set, and every Chistmas I set 3 long tables for a dinner party we give annually. Those birds are gorgeous and the tables are so elegant! Yes, we do have to store it-I use zippered china packs-but it’s so very much worth the time, effort, and expense for the pleasure it brings to so many. Terrific video!! I also don’t like the bathroom holiday stuff except I don’t mnd a towel or two-and we Do use them.
