Dr. David Richardson discusses why a holistic approach to glaucoma is essential and why intraocular pressure itself is only one of the components of glaucoma. In the treatment of glaucoma, it is important to also focus on other issues that are involved in glaucoma besides just pressure.
Watch and listen to Dr. David Richardson’s holistic approach recommendations for treating glaucoma. By holistic, it means an overall approach- one that goes beyond just intraocular pressure.

Thank you Dr. Richardson for making this video. I've been diagnosed and treated for elevated eye pressures for many years now. Just this year I lost almost all sight in my right eye. I became very discouraged with all the attempts to slow the vision loss process by getting treatment for the symptoms and not the root cause of the problem. Not to mention all the side effects of the medicated eye drops that is typed in very small print on the insert of the box. So much was revealed to me in prayer about the lack of nutrients to support the blood vessels, retina and optic nerve. So I'm researching the supplements and foods that would provide proper nutrients to support the cardio vascular system and aid the back of the eye ball (retina, optic nerve and blood vessels) for good vision. I had to cut back/stop the sweet treats and caffeine and get back into a good workout routine. I praise God that my vision is slowly returning in my right eye. And I'm trying to prayerfully take good care of my left eye. The information you've shared has been a confirmation to what I've always suspected. Hopefully, we can get somewhere based off what you have shared and get the root cause of the matter instead of just treating the symptoms. There is just too many people who are being affected and losing their sight. Young and old by misinformation, to be polite. I've been waiting for an eye doctor who has true compassion for glaucoma patients. And here you with this video exposing some of the root causes of this eye condition. The Lord bless and keep you. And thanks again.

Many people get very little info on their specific eye condition from their ophthalmologist as their practice is busy and they process patients through the testing areas to the end area where they meet you briefly. It is tough to find much info from the clinic and changing doctors is not easy and not helpful either, in some cases. YOUR series therefore, is of immense help Dr Richardson. Thank you very much. I will view all your videos.

I have glaucoma (especially in my left eye) with a good amount of upper central vision loss. This condition just showed up one day boom and I could see a big dark spot in my left eye upper central vision (this was in 2007) just there it was. I had been getting regular eye exams and my IOP never ever was over 18 and I started on IOP lowering eye drops, then in 2013 I went into hardcore ancestral dietary ketosis for quite another reason and I found a few years later that my vision was getting worse (or so I thought) as I was noticing (even with glasses) having to squint or change my sight angle looking at my computer monitor. So, I tried an experiment and grabbed a pair of my older less strong prescription glasses and could see the screen better, this led me to find the oldest pair of glasses that I had (20-25 years old) and I could see the screen even better. Finally I went to my eye doctor (oh and along this journey I cut my eye drops dosage in half so 50% less) and he said that my current prescription was "way" to strong and I ended up with roughly the prescription that I was using in 1995. Then as a little more time has gone by, on my last visual field check, there was more area opening up in which I could see. My eye doctor said that it isn't supposed to be getting better with time, but rather worse. So, he was at a loss. Anyway thought I would share this for what it is worth. Also, of interest, my wife entered into dietary ketosis and in less than 1 year she had to have the strength of her glasses reduced. We have since talked to a few others that have said the same when they became keto adapted.

Dr Richardson, hope that you will cover the problems inherent with low tension glaucoma, allied with of course, the blood pressure theme. The Holistic approach approach, treating the patient as a whole, is excellent. Impressive, in fact. Keep up the good work - look forward to further episodes.

We still got one good eye. So I am not too worried. BTW I never take any medication or surgery cos they only mask the symptom and have serious side effects. Holistic is the way to go. Thanks very informative, especially the BAC in glaucoma drops. The first thing I did when you mentioned that, was to reach for my Dorzolamide/Timolol solution, and of course there it is as the preservative. Has the amount of BAC (0.0075% in my case) in ophthalmic solutions been found to be detrimental to the trabecular meshwork, or is some higher concentration likely to cause damage?

I had 11 eye procedures for detached retinas, lens replacements, and glaucoma. I developed dry eye so bad I couldn't open my eyes for more than 5 seconds at a time and I basically had to stay in my house for 2 weeks with the lights off and shades pulled down. One of my Doctors said... "I wonder if this is because of the preservatives", and that saved my eyes. I went preservative free on everything and I returned to normal functioning. For normal dry eye I take preservative free natural tears every hour or so. Continuing my story 15 years later... I'm living in a foreign country now and I ran out of one of my preservative free glaucoma meds and a lazy doctor told me I had to take the preservative based one because the preservative free was not available here. It almost made me blind from severe dry eye again after a month. I went to another doctor and he obtained preservative free meds and again, saved my eyes. Now this video just let me know that those preservative based meds may have made my glaucoma worse... and I'm scoring worse on my visual field tests in one eye. So I like the ide of "holistic" treatment and I'm going to lose the final 20 pounds and increase my cardio. Thanks Doc !!

Maybe it is a negative impact from Vitamin A deficiency but I have never had any vitamin deficiencies in my entire life.

Thank you so much and please continue. I've failed laser treatment and about 7 medications so far for my glaucoma. Trying the 8th now. After doing my own research, I revamped my diet which is now full of fresh fruits and vegetables (and no processed foods), meditate an hour a day, exercise to my capacity, including using a mini trampoline (said to improve blood flow to the optic nerve), and take gingko (said to improve peripheral vision). We'll see how my eyes do. I certainly feel better systemically. I already have a blind spot in the central vision of one eye and I sort of feel like it's improving.... I would really love any other suggestions you might have for things I could try, to help keep my vision.

Hi, hope all is well, I have glaucoma and I'm on a topical carbonic anhydrase inhibitor/beta blocker eye drop, which is triggering systemic autoimmune issues, no matter how healthy I'm eating or fasting. Any suggestions? Thank in advance

I have Sjrogren’s and Glaucoma. Could you please do a video on these together?? I struggle with the glaucoma medicine which dries out my eyes. Then I n the morning I need tons of Systane to help me get my eyes open, or can’t I open my eyes to see to get out of bed. Now I also have Scleritis. They wanna give me a steroid but my other doctor says I shouldn’t take steroids if I have glaucoma.

Hi David, I have raised IOP and a family history of glaucoma and the eyedrops I have used in the past (I had to dump them) were giving me a couple of weird side effects. I can relate to the dry eye problem as I experienced it. I even developed symptoms of depression which I later found out through research and by personal experience was a rare side effect of one of my drops. I am at a loss as to what my next option should be. Any ideas?

I have had glaucoma for more than 40 years. It is now being treated with Travaprost and Timolol Maleate, which are causing dry eyes and usually burn when applied. The brands I have contain the preservative. Looks like I need to talk to my ophthalmologist. Thanks for the info!

Excellent Information--your feelings on Plant Base Diets with those of cardiovascular disease?
@eyemdla
@eyemdla 5 жыл бұрын
Hello Don. Although I seem to be incapable of maintaining a vegetarian diet, I do believe the evidence suggesting that a plant-based diet is less "inflammogenic". As such, plant-based diets should be of potential benefit to those with glaucoma. Dietary studies, however, tend to be fraught with confounders so I take most of them with a large grain of salt.

It is like a reset as I've learned we still need to supplement w iron. Its helped my son seizures be cured! Yep! That might not work for everyone but he was prescribed pediasure which literally his body would reject it cause I've found its riddled w chemicals! Natural pesticide free foods healed my son! Try what your instincts are telling you. Research apply and tweak as you go.

If you are going to follow a plant diet, please make sure it is whole food plant based and avoid excess oils. There was a study that Dr Gregor did a talk on that showed veggies and vegans were more likely to have heart attacks because of high levels of homocysteine in our bodies. A lot of vegan replacement products are full of omega 6 oils which causes homocysteine to rise. We need the ratio of 1 omega 6: 4 omega 3s. The body also needs sufficient folate and b12 to get rid of homocysteine build up so you will need to supplement for b12 and your folate will come from the green leafys! If you eat only whole plant foods and make sure your ratios are correct by having a tablespoon or two of ground flaxseed you will get the best health outcome 😊

If you have headaches and other symptoms not so traditional in glaucoma get checked for intracranial hypertension. IH is often. Misdiagnosed as glaucoma. As IH can cause many things to happen in the eye as a sign/symptom of IH.
