IDoNotSow absolutely. To dissect each element of the song and how each of them are doing their own thing. It all just melds and flows. I’ve always been in awe with how against the grain they are with your standard song writing. So unorthodox and different. The emotional flow just reverberates through your soul. But try to explain that to a normal person.

Sorry for the extreme run on sentence in that comment. I wrote that comment when I was dead tired. If I could request a breakdown "How *insert name* Write A Song" ; it'd be nice to see something like Mudvayne, Stone Temple Pilots, Avenged Sevenfold, or new vs old Three Days Grace, or maybe even early any era of Cradle of Filth. Sorry if that's a lot of weird requests, but I listen to almost all music primarily Metal~Rock.

I fucking love the internet. I never thought anybody would give the time of day to deconstruct the Deftones work, but I'm glad you did as it really highlights some very interesting techniques. I do ponder whether the likes of Chino is consciously applying some music theory to his vocal melodies or whether it's just part of his subconscious style.
@StarsDie886 жыл бұрын
This video really does a great job at showing the appeal of Deftones. Because it's how they do things differently than the typical mainstream rock band that made them stand out to me. And I've always felt that Chino had some of the most experimental melodies I have heard from a rock band.
@Guitaristscreamer6 жыл бұрын
TLDR: Most songs arent hard to play but impossible to write like them This is why I love them. At first listen they seem a little simple(minimalistic) and in a way they are. If youve been playing guitar, bass, and/or drums for a bit like me and many people, their songs arent too hard to learn but if you tried to write a song with a similar structure itd be hard as hell. Also their combo of instrumental writing, vocals and rhythm make them complex but amazing.

And you know what the most mind blowing thing is? All the things that you broke down about the Deftones totally come instinctually to them. I bet Steph comes up with a riff, Abe writes a cool beat and Chino starts singing and to us it's this genius that we have to pick apart and analyze. To them it's just reflex. That's where I wanna be. Where style meets instinct.
@wickedlee6646 жыл бұрын
David Alexander not as much as you think. Do you play in a band? I remember when my band opened for them years ago in Sacramento. I could tell they were real musicians and they def. Know theory.
@jynxvox6 жыл бұрын
Chad Allen oh I'm not saying they are not real musicians. If anything I'm saying they are real geniuses that have real talent and ability. I'm saying we break apart what that genius in an attempt to understand how it could come naturally to them.
@wickedlee6646 жыл бұрын
David Alexander yeah... it’s true some people have more musical “talent” than other people but that doesn’t negate learning theory in one form or another. A band like that has applied at least some theory from the beginning. I’ve played in bands that just slapped together riffs without any knowledge of how they worked together. You can tell when theta happening. It can still be good but it has its own feel and sound.
@WT_Neptune6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I doubt the idea of singing upper structures comes without theory knowledge.

Loved the deftones since 98. Their White Pony album which defined their current sound was basically taken from the band Hum. The song "Little Dipper" by Hum, screams Deftones. Chino has mentioned this, so it's not new but it's crazy that a lot of Deftones fans don't know of Hum. The White Pony cover is an homage to Hum's "You'd prefer an Astronaut" album cover. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rGekfGmfjJmmfqc Keep in mind this came out the same year Adrenaline did. Which blows my mind. Like others I've been a Deftones fan for many many years. As a fan of music I can entertain myself with certain new bands/songs currently out. With plenty of cringe in my blunder years, it awesome to know that my interest in them was real. Knowing I've probably outgrown most of my past interest, I can always count on what I felt and still feel about the Deftones. For the most part we all feel like we have an understanding of who we are. All these years later I'm suppose to feel like an adult but then the Deftones will randomly sneak their way into my ears again (like this suggested video) and I'm happily reminded of who I really am. I'm still that lost teenager but I now allow myself to feel and find happiness in the small things like headbanging and singing along. I'l like to think that the Deftones has something to do with my humble state of mind. They give me a feeling of sonder and if I can continue to keep others, even strangers in my thoughts, then teenager me would probably be proud. Except in the money department. Teenager me would kick my ass if I knew I would be this broke.

Dang, I truly wish I understood music theory the way this guys describes it. I know he put hours and hours into his research and theories before presenting it to the world, but it seems smooth and 2nd nature describing Deftones music in technical music terminology to this guy. This is very interesting because the music dissected here is that of Deftones who are kings at going against the grain of what your brain thinks its going to hear vs what actually happens. Im always in awe of Deftones making sort of "simple" songs, but very complex at the same time. Their music is almost like a paradox in itself. Long live Deftones-one of the best heavy rock/metal bands of all time.

Awesome video! It was nice to have a fan explain how to appreciate a band I don't particularly care for. I learned a lot. Also, I wanna hear your take on how Modest Mouse writes a melody.

I love deftones. Their sound feels like the love I will never know. Instead of feeling low, you can turn the longing into a dreamy melody. Like alchemy. Sadness becomes the precious exploration into the unknown. She is my mistress

Nearly every time you said "The deftones" I wanted to say "It's deftones, not the deftones" Great video though.

You just gave me so many tattoo ideas. I'm forever grateful. A very huge fan of Deftones since as far back as i had ears toward music. A band I never wanna see retire

yea there’s more into music then you’d think. artist should be appreciated, like a good song deserves the fame . it makes sense i know it’s bizzare that we just make people famous but at the same time it is valuable in the sense that with out them , their craft wouldn’t be here really is rare . we all are special in that sense we all bring something to the table .

Love that you've shifted to rock bands for this season! I'd love to see Nine Inch Nails, Incubus, Paramore, Queens of the Stone Age, or if you're looking for a challenge, Opeth and Porcupine Tree. Thanks for the great videos!

I play a lot of deftones on my guitars and a lot of the things you’ve said is the same thing I think when I play their music. Makes me happy I think the same as a musical expert as your self. :)

Honestly, seeing these guys live is lie a whole new experience. You know it’s going to be amazing but when it happens it’s completely euphoric and you find yourself getting put into a trance like state.

I'm so glad I found this video! I'm a huge fan of Deftones and I agree on the points you've outlined. It'd be great if you did The Dillinger Escape Plan, I think there's a lot that could be said and if anyone should say it, it should be you! :)

The riff for hexagram is amazing. So creative, one of my favorite Stephen riffs.
