Holland 2018: Recumbent Trike Kit List.
In this episode I empty out my panniers to show you, my subscribers, the items of kit that I carried with me on my Round the Netherlands Tour on my recumbent trike. I took with me everything I needed in just two 20ltr Ortlieb panniers and one side mounted Ortlieb handlebar bag.
More details on the route can be found at Round the Netherlands Tour - www.hollandcyclingroutes.com/...
"We cycled the Tour of the Netherlands" hall of fame (on the Dutch website) - www.nederlandfietsland.nl/lf-...

I see so many people cheaping out and getting the tiny one man tent. Bigger is better when you can store stuff inside without losing comfort. Well done video.

Thanks Bruce. Yep, I love having plenty of space to spread out in. I'd recommend that tent to anyone. It's very lightweight for its size.

Tim, still watching video but wanted to mention that you may want to carry an RFID blocker in that pouch with your credit cards. IDK how prevalent ID or credit card theft or scams are in the UK but big problem on this side of the pond. I know also that you are planning to go back to the continent in the future so RFID blocker is necessary. Great video. You have excellent equipment. I love the Thermarest sleep system and the tent especially. Thank you for putting the video together and for posting it.

I think just that one use for that tent makes it well worth having. A secure trike at the end of the day lends itself to a better nights sleep.

Very interested in the sleep system. An interesting alternative to a sleeping bag. I usually end up sliding off the mattress during the night anyway! Great video thanks
@TimsTrikeTrips
@TimsTrikeTrips 6 жыл бұрын
That was always my problem too Peter until I bought this. I also never really liked the way a sleeping bag moves with you when you turn in the night. Always felt a little claustrophobic in them. This is more like a real bed. My only problem with it up until now is that its probably too warm for the summer months. Thanks for the compliment 😉

Thanks for good review of your gear. I will check out the thermarest sleeping stuff as my husband is a very disgruntled camper if his sleep is not comfortable. Last trip we both carried eggshell foam roll and self inflating exped mattresses. But that thermarest may be more compact.

Hi Jennifer. I like the depth of the thermarest pads that I use. I've tried the self-inflating types (without the eggshell) but didn't find it comfortable enough for my back. I hope you get a good night on them too when you try them.

Thank you for this vid Tim. Question, maybe a bit premature because you said review of Trinny is in the pipeline, but, why did you choose to biketour on a trike?
@TimsTrikeTrips

Thanks for the question Alexander. I have a minor disability which led me to riding a trike rather than a bike. Though now I wish I'd found trikes sooner. But more on that in my trike review. Thanks for watching.

Hi Bill. Welcome to my channel. I strapped the tent across the top of the panniers directly behind the headrest. A big mistake as it turned out. Ended up snapping my rear fender in two. 😫
@rickdenbraber6869
@rickdenbraber6869 6 жыл бұрын
Did you not have rain covers for your cycling shoes. Most guys I know will ride long distance through anything but if they forget their shoe covers and it starts to rain they pack it in. It is nice to prevent wet ruined shoes and hypothermia.
@TimsTrikeTrips
@TimsTrikeTrips 6 жыл бұрын
I have tried different rain covers and still ended up with wet feet. They don't seem to work too well in the reclined position. Now I figure its just more equipment to carry and just take an extra pair of dry socks for after the rain instead.

what I did not see is how the tent goes on the trike, are they very heavy. Love the tent. Did you have to increase the tire pressure for carrying a tent?
@TimsTrikeTrips
@TimsTrikeTrips 4 жыл бұрын
I strapped it across the back of my seat behind the headrest. The tire pressures were increased anyway because of all my kit. The tent isn't all that heavy in itself (about 6lbs I think).
@paulahavens2764
@paulahavens2764 5 жыл бұрын
thanks, I wondered if there was a tent that I could also put my trike in with me while camping. Great video and I would have left the trike up and slept on it have slept on my trike and found it quite comfortable with just the sleeping bag. The thing I did not see is a floor in the tent does it have a floor where you slept in it?
@TimsTrikeTrips
@TimsTrikeTrips 5 жыл бұрын
Yup you can see the inner tent (where I lay down) has a built in ground sheet. It's a perfect tent for trike touring really. I don't think my back would put up with sleeping on the trike though but well done to you for doing it. 👍

HI Stuart, I'm a pretty light sleeper too so really do need that added comfort & I also have to look after my back so no good sleeping on the ground. Like you say, I reckon its already paid for itself a few times over.

How do you stay dry on a recumbent bike? On a normal bike the water runs down off your waterproof jacket onto your waterproof trowsers and off you. Doesn't it get into your waist area when you're lying down?
@TimsTrikeTrips
@TimsTrikeTrips 5 жыл бұрын
Hi & welcome to my comments section. "How do you stay dry on a recumbent?" Short answer... I don't. Sorry if that's not very helpful but what I mean to say is I have yet to find a way of keeping myself dry below the waist in anything more than a light shower. In fact I've taken to wearing shorts if its looks likely to rain hard so that I have less cloth to dry later and you can rub your legs down with a small towel really easily. Thanks for watching 👍

Tim, at about 1:15 you mention the Ortlieb side bag did not let you down, but the bracket did. Can you be more specific about the bracket? I have an HP Scorpion and am considering a T-Cycle side mount along with the Ortlieb bag. I am concerned about the Ortlieb mounting system. Thanks.
@TimsTrikeTrips
@TimsTrikeTrips 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Richard, welcome to my channel & thanks for subscribing. The bracket I was using was one I made myself. I have updated the design to hold a bag either side of the seat now. I show it in detail on video review of the Scorpion kzbin.info/www/bejne/h6rElKB8nL-bn8k Have a look at that and if you have any questions after then feel free to ask away. I'm happy to help. I just didn't fancy paying the price that t-cycle were asking for theirs and I also enjoy building my own stuff where I can.
@20centurylimited
@20centurylimited 5 жыл бұрын
Tim, thanks for the reply. You’re a more clever guy than I am, and the $109 T-cycle charges for the side mount is worth it to me. On another topic from the linked video, you mentioned a reluctance to go the e-assist route. I have and it’s turned out to be well worth it. At 76, I could no longer hack the hills, or even just maintain a decent speed with ease. E-assist is like having a gentle breeze at my back, and will, I hope, extend my biking career for a long time.
@TimsTrikeTrips
@TimsTrikeTrips 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, my turn with the E-assist will come too. I'm certain I will take the plunge one day. For now I'm happy with the pedal power for as long as I can. 👍
