Holland America Buffet Food @ Lido Market (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner) on ms Veendam (4K)

See what food to expect at the buffet on a Holland America cruise ship for breakfast, lunch & dinner, specifically in this case from the ms Veendam. Numerous sample menus are included as well in this video.
Most of the offerings were high quality and tasty, though the Asian food for lunch were a bit less well executed than some of the other Holland America ships we have been on (e.g. some stir-fried noodle dishes were too "soupy", sushi a bit underwhelming at times, & lack of Asian soup we had on other HAL ships).
Some of the best dishes from lunch included:
• Roasted Striploin
• Dragon Roll
• Chicken Tikka Masala
• Beef Kofta Curry
While the best dinner items included:
• Grilled New York Steak
• Sopade Pollo
• Tropical Fruits Cheesecake
• Citrus Tomato Soup
• Pineapple Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail
• Foie Gras & Rhubarb
• Carpaccio of Beef Tenderloin
• Nutella Cheesecake
• Roasted Beef Tenderloin
• Tiramisu
• Seared Black Pepper Duck Breast
• Parmesan Coated Veal Loin
Please note that some of the same food offerings are served on different days, but we only show them once to avoid repetition.
Overall we enjoyed the food from the Lido Market buffet. Pretty much the only thing that really needs to be improved is are the opening hours for lunch & dinner- both should be extended by at least an hour in our opinion.

Due to Covid, I've been eating at home everyday so this will be so awesome! I refuse to order food from a restaurant that does not have a private reputable delivery service which is rare these days! Thank God I have good cooking skills that have become very useful. Although it's so expensive and time consuming to cook nice dishes at home, you have lots of freedom! For example, you can cook something "out of the blue" just because you feel like it! Also, my cold food is very cold and my hot food is very hot and fresh too! My new olive pitter arrives today along with other culinary toys and delights! (I have an arrangement with Jill's Table kitchen specialty store.) The more you shop, the faster your box shows up at your door free delivery! Can't wait for the cruise for restaurant style food every day! Thanks for showing us what to expect.

Due to your videos, I will probably bring some condiments with me on the cruise! Also, I should bring some Scotties like softies in case I develop cold-like symptoms! In addition, bringing laundry soap to wash clothes by hand may be very useful!

Thank you for a great video. We are sailing the Westerdam for the 2nd time in March 2020 and I have 2 questions for you. #1 Was there never any lobster in the buffet? #2 How many nights was your cruise? We are sailing for 14 nights so I am hoping for not a lot of repeats.

You're very welcome! There were no lobster at the buffet, though lots of shrimp & fish, and they had a seafood special either the last or the next-to-last night of the cruise. This particular one was 14 night just like yours. Have a wonderful cruise!

I love HAL. I’m a 4 Star mariner That being said was on the Veendam cruising to Cuba. Stayed in the Pinnacle Suite and it was falling apart. For $2,000 a night x 7 you think they would have fixed the room up a bit. Not even a handle on the outside balcony door. Oh well we had a great time anyway. The drawers were falling out of the dresser. Electric plugs fell out when unplugging things. Furniture all scratched up. TV was replaced Thankfully. The large fridge in Butler pantry didn’t work. Coffee maker was broke. A rip in the carpet in the dinning room. Rust around balcony door. I could go on and on about how bad the room was but I guess it beats staying home. Food was great in the Pinnacle Grill.

Thanks for sharing your experience! Did you put down your experience regarding the condition of the suite in the post cruise feedback email? Yeah the Veendam is showing her age for sure. We were also on a Cuba cruise on the Veedam roundtrip Boston, and they were having AC issues in the Lido Market here and there. Still we enjoyed the cruise- very good service and food.

How would you rate the food compared to Royal Caribbean? Since viewing your videos we are planning to try Holland America for the first time.

I would say Royal Caribbean has more variety & items in the buffet plus longer operating hours, though the quality of HAL is slightly better. Royal Caribbean lunch at the main dining room is decisively better than HAL, though HAL has an edge in terms of dinner & breakfast IMO. As for snacks- if we are comparing the Oasis-class ships then it is a draw, otherwise HAL has an edge with Dive In Cafe & NY Pizza. In terms of entertainment, Royal is probably much more fun for most, though if you're going on one of HAL's signature class or newer ships their variety of entertainment is pretty good. Hope that helps!

Yeah I heard about that too- I hope it has made the ship more up-to-date and fixed the minor issues it had. We were actually there in late June/early July 2018. Glad you had a nice cruise- we definitely enjoyed our time on the Veendam as well!

It's a warning that eating undercooked food may result in foodborne illness, but we've never had a problem with those dishes. In fact for us the asterisk usually signify a particularly good dish 😁

I am sorry to say that you have just convinced me NOT to travel with Holland America. Their menus were the same old same old. I estimate that 85% was the same tired old dishes whilst approximately 15% looked reasonable. Sorry but I noted that each day there was New York Strip Steak and Garlic Butter on the menu to start with. I don't know if it was me but the trays that contained the food looked unkempt. I did however like your video work which was quite good.

The range of food choices looks great, but after watching this, I had to wonder, does anyone these days teach their kids how to use a knife and fork properly? Holding a knife and fork in your fists isn't a good look.

There were plenty of different types of food but the presentation to me was very poor the food look like it was sitting quite and appear not to be replenished..... Which gave a old look to it and some of the counters were not being cleaned on time after the gas serving themselves which would leave me not to want to go for seconds or in other sorry for the criticism I'm just saying

No worries! Yeah at a cruise ship buffet it's hard to take photos of perfectly replenished dishes. HAL actually has one of the best cruise ship buffets IMO- good stuff.
