Ive had no issues with the Holley Sniper EFI on my AMC 360 in my CJ- 5 whatsoever. Its been about 14 months and just under 9,000 miles since rebuild of the 360 and efi conversion. And the throttle response, smooth power and mileage improvements are fantastic

Modern factory injection is awesome! Aftermarket F.I. on vintage vehicles has never worked well for me. I finally started carrying a Qjet when I went on long 4wheeling trips. Finally gave up and the Qjet now provides the juice. Oh and she runs from 5000 to 12000 ft elevation around Colorado with zero failures.

Great video. I bought my 70 pontiac with it on the car already. I guess i have been lucky because no issues. The reason i really love the setup is because i live at 10,000 ft elevation and every drive i take it is down hill going there. No fiddling with air-fuel mixture screws when i drop down to say 5,000 ft.

Great review. I also made my living over 40 years as a mechanic starting with carbs and points. My experience has been with the Fitech Go Street units. I can't speak to the Holley units but the 2 Fitech units I installed on my '74 Nova (400 SBC w/Vortec CI heads) and on my brothers '73 Corvette have been great. No issues and have run solid since day one but like you said both vehicles ran great originally. I did the installs including the fuel systems using Fitech's recommendations and It's worked well for me. The only bump I ran into was the cam profile selection during the set up, I selected Street/Strip instead of Performance on my Nova and my AFR and IAC would swing wildly. My bad for not fully reading the directions. Other than that smoother idle, better mileage and power have been the benefits.

Living the same regrets. Worrying about the reliability when you just want to get in and go for a nice ride...wondering if you're going to be thrashing under the hood on the roadside and wishing you had a laptop, spare O2 and tin-foil to shield wires. Carburetor, was a little rough at first on a cold day but heck, give it a minute to build up a little heat and you're set and yes, even with a chokeless carb! Really wish I had seen this before I let my engine builder sell me on this idea. Ease of tunability was the selling point but in reality I'm spending more time tinkering with the sniper and idling in the driveway to get it to run consistently and reliability than I ever did with a carburetor. It works when it works (worked great on the engine dyno) but when it doesn't, you're screwed. The intermittent gremlins and the terrible support from Holley is another factor. Another "like new" Sniper Xflow to soon make an appearance on Ebay. Thank you for this honest review.

No one seems to understand that with a carb, you know what to do if it doesn't run just right or needs a little tuning. But with these FIs what does the average guy do when it isn't working right? I'll take the carb any day over something that I will have to take to an "Expert" to fix.

Amen brother. These efi swaps arent as easy as everyone thinks or is told. I've tried the fi tech, and its definitely a learning curve. Efi timing with a distributor is hard to wrap your head around, for me anyways. Long story short went back to a carb for a year and decided to try multiport injection, we'll see if its worth it, I've been peicing it together plus ignoring the price tag lol

I have the sniper efi and hyperspark in my 79 c10. My first efi had the tps go, then the wbo2 sensor went, then an injector stopped firing. At 220km. Holley sent me a new sniper. Second one comes and an injector is already dead so swapped it out with 1 from my first sniper. Then the mat is reading high error. At 460km now. Holley sent me my 3rd sniper. It's on my truck now and running but I feel like I shouldn't be on my third one after only a total of 460km. But no stock so I got upgraded to a super sniper. Hoping for much better results thia time around

I went with the sniper on my 69 Camaro with a 383. Also did it because I was building the car for my wife. Initially it hated the msd distributor, kept kicking back and breaking flex plate teeth and starters. Went to the dual sync, better but not perfect. Had to change coil, rfi interference. Then coolant temp sensor reads 20 off, had to replace sensor. Then tps read 20 percent at idle/replaced. Then 2 o2 sensors in 1 day so holley replaced the ECM. 2 weeks after getting it back it won't go into closed loop because coolant temp unavailable even though it is reading on the display. Coming off in the spring and going back to the carb.

I've done EFI to Carb retrofits to a lot of cars that were having ongoing problems with the factory setup. I've found that a great option is the Quick fuel carb out of the box. Another option is if you know of anybody that flows carbs can set you up with a custom built unit go for it. I like the fuel injection option but I've also seen problems that even experienced builders are having & I prefer a fresh built Holley type unit. The AFB & the like are also excellent choices for the street, very dependable (old school) Played with the Predators for a long time with very good results but the rebuild kits are sketchy & the AFR is 12.5... Not good for mileage but performs VERY well.

Thumbs up to another not feeding into the KZbin image of being perfect. I swapped a carb as it was not consistent and I was scratching my head. Upon removal found the mounting bolts looser than they should have been and hose clamps also lose. This could have been contributing to my issues. So those are on me and I like to be transparent to me. Carb needed a rebuild anyway and old temporary carb I threw on there had been sitting in my stash for 20 years and it fired right up.

Interesting review, we have like 5 guys in our classic car club that have gone EFI in the last 2 years and all swear by it. Several guys have had it on for years now, zero issues. Some have even said the days of the mechanical carbs are numbered. It sounds like the majority of your issues have been QC issues with Holley's specific parts they use in their kit. Maybe they are keeping cost down but impacting quality over all.

@@oldsrktracer I'm a digital guy, not mechanical. I don't have patience to continually work on things to make them operate properly and carburetors are no exception. My QuickFuel has been nothing but fussy the last several years and i've about had it. Ethanol and gas quality these days is also a contributing factor i'm sure. Sort of wish i learned more mechanical stuff on cars but there are new technologies that are making conventional mechanical parts that require some level of TLC in cars obsolete. Solid-state voltage regulator is a good example as well. Good video though, enjoyed your opinion.

I'm a professional Auto technician who likes carbs as well and even though EFI has it's plusses, carbs are not going anywhere in the performance world. I run a Holley HP in my carbed 89 mustang, and it will fire right up after two pumps in the middle of winter no prob if I decide to shake some cabin fever on a nice dry day. Hey there is nothing wrong with that. Carbs can be efficient. The closest thing to EFI is a quadrajet carb. It was made to meter all across the board and not give up a thing. Sadly it's misunderstood. I myself only know so much about the Qjet but it's carburetion at it's best. The holley will give up some somewhere as far as carb goes and the edelbrock is about as close as the OE besides the Qjet as you can get. The 3310 holley which was used by GM is also a great carb. It all comes down to what works best for you. I liked the sniper but the quality was bit there. If I go efi again it will be with something above this caliber of quality.

The main advantage with EFI is the ease with which you can drive at altitude. The disadvantage is, the complexity. The reliability of any system decreases with the number of components added to it. I've had the same problems with factory installed EFI as you did but, I still consider it an excellent way to burn gas.

The IAC issue could be a symptom of the throttle blades being open to far. You seem pretty well versed in the sniper but some people assume that the blade location is perfectly preset at the factory. It is impossible to set at the factory, not every engine needs or will pull the same amount of fuel/air at the same rpm/load condition. To properly set blade position/Iac values. The engine needs to be warm, the two holes you covered need to be covered/plugged and throttle blades slowly adjusted. Holley has a huge forum with a great moderator that can help with 90% of issues.

I'm in the process of setting this system up, I also have the dual sync distributor, the crank led light comes on but the cam light does not. I have a 283, cammed with ported heads and ported intake manifold. Anyone know why that light dont come on. Also it will not start.

I have this same system on my 1977 Pontiac Can Am 455 with a 230deg at .050 and 540 lift that always idles & starts fine. If anything it idles smoother than the carb that was on it throttle response is non comparable night and day difference

I dont doubt it. Mine works fine has a few quirks. But the issues i mentioned are common if you follow sniper pages and forums. I still prefer a carb and im pretty good at tuning them.on i bought the sniper to learn to tune EFI. The only running issues this has for me is since i don't have spark control and I have a fast timing curve when i let off the gas for a fas stop it has a flat spot ( like it wants to die ) but i just have to slow down the mechanical advance in the distributor. The other one is it has a flat spot going from a dead idle to WOT. But again that's timing related. My timing curve is coming in fast like I would set it normally for a carb. My review was not to bash it but to a dress some of the pit falls. Specially for guys who cant tune carbs the expectation is this is better and perfect out the box . its a great product but to truly get the best performance you need to still tune it.

@oldsrktracer
@oldsrktracer 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah when I first installed this I wasnt looking to do all that . I dont think they had a dual sync for the olds at that time. It's simple enough to just change the curve in the distributor and dial in the tune on the lap top. I could do the dual sync but you figure the initial cost of the kit , install parts and what not. Now add a dual sync and an ignition system and what not. Its wayyyyy more than i really want to be into it for what it is. I have never had issues tuning carbs . always got good MPG and reliability.

I have the very same car. Mine has a Holley 850 double pumper. I let the fuel pump run until it clicks and then push the throttle once and it starts in a half a rotation. easy to tune idle, just adjust screws until it squeals. oh yea no choke either!

Since when does a IAC valve keep the engine from starting? You have just as many problems with your carb.
@oldsrktracer
@oldsrktracer 4 жыл бұрын
Actually no issues with my carb considering its a chokeless race carb. The IAC will prevent the engine from starting properly if ! The RPM wont ramp up properly. The iac is just a computer controlled fast idle by letting in more air. Which in the sniper has its own port. So if air cant come in properly it will idle rough and not run properly .
@oldsrktracer
@oldsrktracer 4 жыл бұрын
Just to add to that. If on start you get initial fuel and no extra air. The engine floods on initial start up.

Spend a little money on a good AFR gauge. Study your carb circuits with a good book. And tune it based off the AFR and what circuits it's using based off throttle rpm and load. Seems hard but it's very simple the AFR gauge fills in the blanks

I can tell u first hand about fuel mileage. I have a hot motor but if I am light on the pedal I can get over 16mpg. If i am hard on it I get 5mpg. The sniper comes set more for performance then economy so if u are looking to save gas then I will have to adjust afr settings accordingly. But for me 16 mpg for over 500hp at the crank is pretty good. Thats without overdrive going up the grape vine to bakersfield which is quite a hill to climb. In my 4000lb caprice i cruised up mountain at 15% throttle no problem

Again it ran good. Parts failed. And really without spark control the unit is kind of worthless. I ran it for 2 years.. it was good. The only issue was the decel flat spot which was a timing issue. Could have Taylored the fuel table but it also could be manipulated by the spark advance in the HEI. Easily. I never bother with it as it was very minor. Besides that it works. It's just not worth it. A good AFR gauge and understanding of carbs will yeild great results . Again I'm fairly ngood with carbs the EFI was a crack at EFI for me and I saw things I didn't like and didn't want to waste my time with.
