I grow California white garlic in zone 9a in Texas . I just throw it in the fridge for 4-6 weeks and plant them in November and harvest in beginning /middle of June.

What I like about this channel is that you teach the entire process from seed planting to harvest and storage. Everything is important, and I appreciate that you share the results of the effort, and qualify it. I live in zone 8a. I was so overly excited by the idea of planting garlic watching KZbin, that I planted my kitchen garlic in Decenber and February because I didn't know better, and some of it is doing okay, we'll see in the fall. Your videos now provide me with the FULL context and important information, so that I believe I will be more successful in years to come.

Try planting your soft neck garlic where it gets afternoon shade and/or mulch it with pine straw or wheat straw to hold in moisture. And feed it several times in its growing season, just like bulbing onions. That’s what has worked for family and friends in FL.

In the UK we have Wild Garlic which grows in forests, it likes shade. You can use the leaves for a soft garlic taste, great for garlic butter. Not sure if this is something you could try in your wooded areas? Brilliant video btw, yours is the best veg gardening channel 😊

Before you give up on garlic, try a variety called Texas Rose. It's suppose to be tolerant of hot spring weather. I put it in the frig for 4 to 6 weeks and plant mid Nov. I plant it in an area that in the spring they get late afternoon shade.

Thanks for that! I saw that Travis on the Lazy Dog Channel tried some soft neck garlic in South Georgia this year. He followed that technique of putting the bulbs in fridge for some weeks prior to planting so the garlic would have its chill requirement met, he had really good results! I pulled several dozen garlic bulbs from my mid Georgia garden today. Most were 2 inches across. I planted it in early November but I planted it very shallow...just pushed it into the soil with the pointed tip barely under soil. Then I put about an inch of shredded pine over it, water it once a week throughout the winter.

Well shucks. I'm trying to grow garlic for the first time this year. I'm in south Florida (zone 10A), so I won't hold my breath for anything this year. I will try the cold stratification that everyone is suggesting next time.

I tried the Texas Rose variety this year in Southwest Louisiana. If it doesn’t produce so great I’m going elephant garlic from now on. Picking mine soon.

I grew Soft Neck Garlic in Sydney Australia, but I brought some garlic at greengrocer cheap as they where shooting out, so I thought to try, they where Hard Neck Garlic that grew great last year, my first try so now I’ll grow either or both.

mulch will keep the soil cooler and moist. As hot as it gets there, I would mulch for that reason.

I've read all the comments and find it interesting that so many people are offering YOU tips on how to be successful. It truly is a "2 way street" as it should be. It was you that gave us the courage to grow garlic. It worked, at least with the hard necks. We are in Maine. Our stratify season is 4-5 months long, and not just cold soil, but frozen soil. Yet when the ground does thaw completely it's only days to sprouts emerging, middle of April, and ready to harvest first of July. So, 90 days or less from germination to done. Our nemeses is Winter, your nemeses is Summer. Trying to get different "cold weather" crops up and done before it gets too hot. So the question is, how long is your forced stratification period? We've all had a garlic bulb sprout in the crisper drawer. How long was it there? And what variety? I'd be tempted to put a couple garlic bulbs in the fridge and see how long it takes them to sprout, come out of normal dormancy. You do have an advantage, since maturity being about 90 days (allegedly) stratify, plant late Feb, early March, and harvest when plant shows signs, end of May to mid June. The only problem with experimenting in growing garlic is the cost of the seed. Certified Garlic bulbs can be as much as $20 per pound, 8-10 bulbs. In any case, you're the reason our Garlic crop this year is free. All harvested last July, dried, and replanted last November. Thank you for that. TYFS

Yes sir. We all learn from each other. This year I will be placing my bulbs in the refrigerator for two months for cold stratification. We simply don’t have enough chill hours in Florida. I will also postpone planting until December 1st. I am experimenting with 6 different varieties now that are supposed to be more heat tolerant. I will harvest them shortly and determine what varieties work best for me down here. After that, I will commit to a full raised bed this fall. Hoping for a much better yield in 2023👍

@@HollisNancysHomestead Adapt and overcome. Should be every gardeners mantra. I hope you're videoing this experiment. Would be great to see the results, and why it worked or not. Whether it concerns us or not. Here in Maine. Oh, in regards to soaking the cloves or not, the guy we learned from (you) said soak them. We've had 100% germination 3-4 years in a row. Guess I'd say, "If it aint broke, don't fix it." 😊

I'm 9a in southern Louisiana. I sowed soft neck cloves on Thanks Giving (Nov. 25th) and harvested April 12th with a pleasant result. About 25% started to 'witch-broom' but were still good, about 25% were spectacular large bulbs, and about 50% were smaller bulbs than usual but still great. I'm going to do the same thing again at the end of the year. Just saying it seams where you are in '9a' means you may still be able to grow garlic.

I tried garlic this last year and if it hadn’t smelled like garlic I would’ve thought I planted green onions! I pulled them last week, glad I’m not the only one with garlic woes! Great video!!

Planted garlic last year for the 1st time. I'm here in the high desert, sw Idaho. Each has a few greens turning brown but still many greens left. I was told to pull when there are only 4 green tops left. Only planted about 35. Thanks, julie

Try putting the garlic in the freezer for a few weeks before planting in November/December.... you may find you get a much better bulb!

Check out Noble Roots Farm. Shouldn't be far from you. They sell Salmon River Racambole garlic. Mine looked similar to yours, but Noble Roots seems to get heads on theirs. I'm in 9b.

I have some type of garlic growing on my farm that my grandmother planted many years ago, maybe 30-40 years. It just grows and spreads in clumps every year. But she planted it beneath large oak and walnut trees. I'm in zone 7b.

I have successfully grown softneck and have a 50% success rate on hardneck garlic. I'm in Tucson, AZ. If you put your cloves in the fridge for a month before planting, you'll get bulbs. I'm sure Florida is no different.

I live in North Texas and it's blistering hot here for about four or five months of the year. Gardening is very difficult during the summer. Last year was my first year trying to grow a garden, but if there is one thing that I have learned is to find varieties that grow well in your area for your specific climate. I researched onions and garlic that grow well in North Texas (zone 8B) and feel that the varieties that are recommended by our local Ag extension will do well for me. You might check out specific varieties as well.

Cloves buried to deep IMO for soft neck garlic, and you didn't mention refrigerating the bulbs to winterize them. Also, massive root systems have me thinking water was an issue. How often were they watered thoroughly?

That was one heck of an effort! Good for you! Everyone learned something! I sure did! I guess the garlic might do well with a boost in any zone? I'm in NJ, any harm or benefit in soaking garlic here? I love liquid seaweed. I use it to fertilize my veggie plants as they grow. Great lessons! Thank you! 🧄🧄🧄

The method I demonstrated will work well for you. We had great success doing it that way when we lived in Virginia. I am struggling with the heat, humidity and low chill hours down here in Florida. I am currently experimenting with 6 different varieties of garlic that are supposed to be more heat tolerant. When I find a variety that works better for me then I will commit to a full bed this fall. I think I am getting closer. 👍

i can't wait to try this. i tried garlic once before and they never fully bulbed. i also live in Florida. i do used straw as mulch or i find the sun bakes my soil and it gets hard and crusty. how do you keep that from happening? been watching y'all since y'all were gardening in your suburban home. i love your property. very nice piece of land. i live in a neighborhood but hope to have me a homestead soon..

Garlic needs cold stratification in frig for couple months before planting if your zone doesnt have cold winters. Then plant

You should grow them in more shady spot. They gave up because its so hot. Best spot plant it 3-5? rows into the north side of the corn patch. It might be cooler in the shade from your native trees. You almost have it. They were only 40 more good days away.

I am at Zone 6- I plant Hardneck garlic from Keene Garlic- the 1st year was great- 2nd year planting them at the same lot ( no more other space that I can rotate)- I amended the soil - My 2nd harvest was not bigger than 1st year- assuming because of planting the same lot? I might not feed them as often as the 1st year. My question: DO I need to rotate planting the garlic?

Green garlic, or immature garlic, is a delicacy. Use it instead of leeks in leek and potato soup.

Did you cold stratify the cloves for a couple weeks first? That usually helps a lot in hot climates.
