I figured out how to find YOUR videos on any subject! Instead of searching say "growing potatoes in a bucket" and getting any and all videos from various channels, I search "Hollis and Nancy growing potatoes in a bucket" and it lists yours first! So whatever the subject is, as long as I put "Hollis and Nancy" first, it gives YOUR video on the subject first.

I just want to say i look up to you and follow all your videos. I am a veteran who served in Iraq twice 03 04 05 06. Holy chit! Every single bag of organic potatoes I buy has potatoes that chit all on their own. I am planting those little "chits", too!

The only reason I only use seed potatoes is they are certified disease free. The organic grocery store potatoes will chit because they haven’t been sprayed but they may very well have a disease that you will introduce to your garden soil. If you save your spent container soil for amending and reuse do not use it for tomatoes or potatoes 👍

Thank you so much sir for this information. I am from Russia. My family & I we move to America when I was 13 years old. I remember that in Russia even during our modern time people keep a garden, or two where they grow their own food. It’s very common in Russia for people to grow most of their own produce. Even for those Russians who live in a busy city they own plots of land outside of the city that they travel to on the weekends to work that land. My family we owned a couple of plots of land, and we grew all kinds of food. I remember one of our gardens was surrounded by very lush raspberry bushes. We had a cherry tree apricot tree. We harvested so much strawberry. After my mother jarred the fruit, veg, and berries for the winter, we ended up giving a lot away to our friends and neighbors for free. Here in Florida you don’t see people growing their own food. In Jackson Florida it seems like people care more about the appearance of their land then utilizing every inch of their land for growing food. That’s why in America we have a multi million dollar lawn care industry . Somethings don’t really grow in Florida though. Like for example my favorite fruit apples I don’t think they grow in Florida. Citrus grows easily here. I really want to tear off all of my grass in my back yard, and start my own garden here. I just can’t do it without machinery. I also want to use as little as possible of fertilizers, or any other unnatural ways to force the growth of the plants. I have been experimenting in my house with certain vegetables. Like for example I was cooking in my kitchen last year, and while I was chopping a Bellpepper I decided to save the seeds. Well I planted those seeds in the bucket of dirt, and it turned into plant. Next thing I know it’s producing small peppers. And now that my pepper plant is heading towards its second summer, suddenly it started to produce a whole bunch of peppers and big to. I did the same experiment with black beans. I had a bag of dried black beans. I wasn’t using them so I wanted to throw them away, but I saved a few beans. I planted them and it also turned into a plant. The plant ended up giving me a few strands of newly grown black beans. Unfortunately the plant didn’t survive because of all of the rain we’ve received last summer. Too much rain made it go sour, and it died, but I did save those beans that the plant produced, and I’ll use them to grow more black been plants. I think it’s important for people to experiment themselves at home, because they have because they have to become familiar with their local climate, local soil, how much rain they get, etc.. When you grow something yourself, the excitement and joy you received from that is unexplainable. It just feels so good to grow something on your own. Self-sufficiency is how the common folks around the world will free themselves from tyranny.

I have always admired that about Russia. It should be that way in the USA but money will never let that happen. More and more people are beginning to realize how bad the GMO foods are for your health and growing their own vegetables. +Nancy Houston As your plants emerge in the containers, when they get 12 inches tall fill in more soil leaving 2 to 3 inches of the plants exposed. Continue this process until the soil is 2 inches below the rim of the container. Then let the plants grow as big as they will until the end of the summer. When you see the plant leaves turning yellow your potatoes are ready for harvest. Love your channel, you might try digging your potatoes after the vines completely die off. We’re from central NC and harvest around July 4th so they won’t rot. I live in western Washington state where our soil is very heavy clay. We've tried amending the soil in the past to lighten it up, with limited success and too much money. At our age (in our 70s) I'm ready to stop in-ground gardening and using buckets for potatoes is a good start, plus it will take far less soil! I like the idea of harvesting just one bucket at a time, too. Thank you for your excellent video. I love your friendly, down-home manner and the way you make everything so do-able.

Mr. Hollis, I just wanted to let you know that I was able to get my six year old son interested in working with me in my vegetable gardens because of your videos. We watch them together and his favorite part is the different Bible quotes that you post at the end of each video. He always asks me, "Can we watch the christian man's grow videos on KZbin?" I always say yes and we either watch a new video or re-watch one that we've already seen. Our favorite videos are these potato videos! I am growing kennebec and sweet potatoes for the first time ever and we followed your instructions to the very detail. You can get store bought just fine. Rinse in a peroxide solution before chitting and you'll get better havests than seed potatoes.

I just watched your videos. I'm a farm raised boy stuck on about 1/2 an acre in Florida thinking I needed a few acres to have a garden. Great instructional video! I have grown potatoes all different ways and this year they are being split into two different ways. One into containers like yours(I like the way you label everything) And the second is an old family way which is on the ground, that's been tilled and amended. After amending the soil, I'll sink the bottom of the seed potato in the ground , then cover with straw. As they grow I keep adding more straw until there is a thick layer.Come harvest time, you just remove the tops of the plants that have died back and just pull the straw back. And you won't believe how many potatoes are sitting on and in the ground.It's fun for kids to do too and after harvest, you just till that straw into the ground for next year. My Container potatoes will line the outside of my deck.And I'm going to put rails under them like yours to insure good drainage. Sorry I rambled on.Thank you for a new way to try growing my potatoes. ~Dolly

+PeteTravels I save my spent container soil from potatoes in my reclamation box for amending and reuse for vegetables other than potatoes. Always use new soil for potatoes due to viruses that will ruin your potatoes.

Well after watching your growing potatoes in a 10 gallon bucket video I just used the organic potatoes I had in my fridge and some already had chits growing on them so I just potted them in a good soil mixture I made up. Didn’t know about the seed potatoes thing. Hope mine take. 🙏

Maybe it's where I live, maybe it's the potatoes I buy, but mine start growing in the cabinet. Two weeks after buying, they have leaves. I can just toss those near some dirt and end up with a new potato plant 😂

That is just an expense I could not handle last summer, so I went to our community recycling center and picked up as many cat litter buckets as I could as well as any other large plastic containers and just went wild with them as well as used the fifty cent Walmart bags for other things. I also went to a landscaper who saved some of his used larger black plastic planters that some of his trees and shrubs came in, for me. It was alot of fun but took much more watering than a conventional garden does.

Check the last frost date for your location here www.almanac.com/gardening/frostdates. I heard you want to plant 2 weeks before your last frost date. I'm no expert, but seasons vary year to year anyway. I bet your local garden center could advise you.

Nice presentation, but you can shorten the process by going to nursery and buying seed potatoes, but I'm guessing you are going to go stick with your method. lol I was born in Scotland where the potato is the National vegetable, fruit, and bird. In the 50s taters were the food we depended on for about 60% of our diet. If you want to read a book to show you just how much, read about 2 million Irish and Scots dying during the "Potato Blight." During this time England was exporting food to the rest of the world. We dont care to much for the English and that feeling still persists. Brussel Sprouts and cabbage were also very important to our diet and mutton when we had the money. Traced our family back to 1802 and everyone up to my dad was a coal miner or sod digger. Have a lot of unknown relatives in Kentucky and West Virginia, because of potato blight but we came into the country legal like. May God Bless you and All that you Love. JustBill

Cutting them up is a waste of time. One eye equals one stem, cut or not. Chitting is unnecessary too, just plant them and they'll grow.

You can plant a seed potato with no Chitts at all. The only set back is it takes longer but no big deal. You can cut the potatoes to capture at least two eyes and have more plantings.

they don't coat the store potatoes with anything. The problem is when you buy fresh potatoes they have'nt had a chance to break their dormancy.

I have to agree. This seems to be either a defunct practice or it's just an old wives tale, but the rumor persists. Every video about potatoes, you'll hear it. Yet, I have seen store bought potatoes chit IN THE REFRIGERATOR. Having worked in grocery myself, I can't see why a company would bother with it in the first place anyway. Farming already has tough margins, and having to buy some chemical to spray into a product, which by the time it's on the shelf farms have made their scratch, just eats into that even more. It's all done on credit. The farms sell to distro, distro fronts product for the retailers, the retailers repay distro. Once distro has bought the product, the farmer need not really care how long the product lasts, that's distro's problem. A distro isn't going to unpack, spray, then repackage. I just don't believe it. Go buy a bag of 'taters and just let them sit, and I guarantee you, they'll chit.
