That's some fine grinding there my friend 👍 I need to get a wheel for handles mostly. Was that an 8in wheel you were using?
@TonySeverioKnives6 ай бұрын
Thanks brother. Yes this was an 8 inch wheel. The bevels look good on this size knife in my opinion. But the larger the wheel, the easier it is. I highly suggest the largest wheel you can afford. They still look great know matter what size.
@snow_tacknives20193 ай бұрын
My brother built me a 2x72 sander/grinder, total build custom welding just ordered all the parts. I was telling him we need market it! lol! Its a outstanding design but I've been using it mostly to hog off and polish it has 3400rpm motor, we're replacing it with 1750rpm , he told me if we reduce the motor wheel size it will reduce the 1750rpm down a little more so we ordered 1750, this 3400 is too much speed. Anyway had a couple of questions for you, were attaching a 10" knife wheel for hollow grinds. The top tube my platen slides into the top. It was built with separate lower tube for the table. I've been specializing in 4-1/2" hand grinder to create my hollow grinds but my bro is making me a custom attachment for 10" wheel to attach in front of my table, positioned just off the table. My grinder has 2 attachment tubes which is pretty cool but what I was wondering will the 10" wheel handle 3/4" - 1" wide hollow grinds? also do you hollow grind to zero tolerance or do you create a secondary cutting edge? I was just curious, I think I might need another separate tube attachment so that I can use the 10"wheel without the table. Will I need it more with the table to create the hollow grinds or more without the table for the hollow grinds? Thanks for your time! You do an outstanding job on your knives! I dig you systems and approach, I do similar approaches., I tend to make larger blades and they're a lot of hogging off and work...lol! exclusively stock removal and I use a water spray bottle to keep steel cooled down. Next year I'm shooting for making me a new 625sq foot metal shop adding new lathe, welder, propane forge and oven as well as some specialized grinders. I want a cleaner shop with work desk like yours, my current shop one has dirt floor and outside overhead awning. My new shop I'll have a cement floor and I love working partially outside so I'll have an outside work area with overhead awning roof. Just ran across your YT, I'm sure I'll be back to steal some ideas thanks again!

Awesome man! A 10” wheel will give you a 3/4 grind height with a 20 thousandths edge thickness then make your secondary sharpening bevel. Hope you get your shop going! Thanks for watching!

@@TonySeverioKnives What angle do you do your secondary cutting bevel? with a ending 20 thou thickness? ...15 degree, 10 degree? I've been getting around 10-15 degree or sometimes I finish them out to zero like on a straight razor or scandi/convex type.

Ok; just came over from your short. So, 1st mistake on my end was not knowing that this is considered a hollow grind - I thought that applied only to the edge itself. 👍🏼. Follow up question: can I do a hollow grind on a flat platten or is a wheel kind of a must on that?
@TonySeverioKnives4 ай бұрын
A wheel is used to hollow grind. You are cutting a concave bevel with a wheel. The flat platten cuts a flat bevel from the edge towards the spine. But techniques to beveling are the same..
@Unclelarry766abc6 ай бұрын
Hey Tony, first congrats on the Journeyman. I’m new to hollow grinding, so thank you for this video. But what size wheel would you recommend for hollow grinding basic hunting knives? Thanks!
@TonySeverioKnives6 ай бұрын
Thank you! I use an 8” wheel for most but wider blades will need a larger wheel. But the larger the wheel, the easier the grind. And you can grind any blade with a large wheel.
@bfox895 ай бұрын
Tony, Im new to knife making just got a ameribrade grinder with a platen attachment and small wheel attach. Do you always use a large wheel to hollow grind? Do you ever use a platen?
@TonySeverioKnives5 ай бұрын
Cool man. I use several sizes of wheels to hollowgrind depending on the size of the blade or the style such as a double edge blade design verses a skinner etc. yes I use a platten all the time for flat grinding etc.
