They followed good code design and could reuse assets all over the place. The coliseum is a bunch of enemies with the same AI as other enemies but with higher health pools. Other games get criticized for doing that, but Team Cherry knew the appropriate places to reuse things so it didn’t FEEL like it was all the same. Intelligent reuse of existing assets can make something far more expansive. Props to TC!

But you didn’t notice because in that instance, reused AI actually works! Most games it feels lazy, but the colosseum makes them feel like the same enemy, just put in armor. It’s actually really smart, since players think “it’s not reused AI, they just got an armor buff” when even the hunters journal lists them as separate enemies.

A lot of people don't like the snowgrave route for chapter 2, but for me, it just adds more play time. I hope toby adds more weird routes, or just some other route in later chapters. while deltarune already has some choices that come back, changing the course of the game is cool. if Undertale had only the neutral route, I'm not sure I would have played it after I beat it once, but the other routes add variety.

I'm working on an indie game right now and stuff like this makes me feel super insecure lol. I started making indie games cause I thought "this will be fun, just a nice passion project, people won't expect it to be super perfect cause it's an indie game." But now I realize I'm a toddler being put in a fight against a dragon. Like I don't think I'll be able to make my game half as good or fleshed out as hollow knight in the 6 years I'm planning it to take for me to work on it. It's awesome that we have such good indie games but man, does it make getting into indie game development feel a lot more stressful knowing what you're gonna be compared to. It's the game that introduced me to the metroidvanias genre (though I had played Metroid games before I played HK) and became my gold standard for metroidvanias, because I think it was THAT well done. I am very scared about how hyped up Silksong has been. No matter how good something could potentially be, human imagination of hiw good they think it will be will always outclass it. At this point some people will be expecting literally spiritual nirvana levels of quality and if the game is anything less than that, they will be disappointed. Overhyping is always one of the things behind the fall of basically every large game or just anything. Anyone remember No mans sky? Fallout 76? Cyberpunk 2077? Battlefield 2042? And so so many more.

HK greatest advantage in terms of production is that the core gameplay is unbelievably simple.

I wouldn't call that an advantage. Maybe from a developer perspective as you can focus on making content more easily. Tbh most old-school metroidvanias worked like this. Metroids and Castlevanias. Only recently have we started seeing metroidvanias with deeper mechanics or more involved combat like Death's Gambit or Afterimage.

@@paledrake It frees the developers up to focus on other parts of the game. It's why the atmosphere, artstyle and environmental storytelling in Hollow Knight is so much more important to the game than the actual gameplay.

@@Mediados Atmosphere and artstyle pretty much every indie metroidvania excels at. Now environmental story-telling is an interesting one as different games approach it in different ways. HK definitely excel in this field and it was interesting seeing how they approach it.

One of my favorite things about HK is how you need a ton of somethings, but they're all so spread apart, and intricately designed. Like, we often don't appreciate how they managed to lock the entirety of the crystal peaks behind one item. Really shows the creativity and innovation that went into this game, and serves as a testament to how good silksong will be.
