You missed the most important part of the Soul Tyrant's defeat dialogue: "In my dreams I could see it." He's not the only ghost in Hallownest who was visited by such prophetic-seeming dreams of glory and ultimately turned from fighting the infection to fighting the Pale King. The Radiance gets her foot in the door of your mind through your dreams, and the Pale King rejected the Soul Master's plan not out of jealousy, but because it was a poisoned red herring from the start. The Radiance would never inspire the path to her own destruction. She was the voice in his head, promising things that would never be.

Yeah it's kind of frustrating he didn't notice this. Radiance is associated with blinding searing light there is an obvious connection with Soul and the Radiance. Void being the polar opposite of Soul, sickly and black. I'm curious about these elements at play in this universe if they are at odds with each other or if they are a sort of balancing ying-yang act. The Knight seemed to be the perfect "balance" containing both Void and Soul/Dream Essence to bring whatever equilibrium to Hallownest that may have come from the True Ending.

It always amazes and horrifies me to see that vast chamber filled with dead bugs. The one you enter when the Soul Master shatters the big glass ceiling. The sorcerers were presumably murdering thousands and thousands of bugs to harvest the soul in them. Who knows how many? Soul Master and his students basically committed a bug holocaust, and I wonder how much of Hallownest's population was taken and killed in the Soul Sanctum. No wonder they became corrupted. It's also funny that the Pale King rejected Soul Master's theory, since the King himself committed his own genocide in the form of all the Knight Siblings he created and abandoned/destroyed. And his plan didn't even work.

​@@myla3632idk why the HK was trained in combat at all. It wouldn't fight the Radiance, and if it ever failed (like it did), it would be another backfire. PK could've stacked quiet kids in a roll to take their turn in being sacrificed without creating any significant bond (that would eventually fail, yes, but look at how many children he had)

once you defeat the soul tyrant he said he had a "prophetic vision", this with the voice in his head pretty much confirm that it was the radiance which controlled him all along (this also explain why the pale king stood against his experimentations)

I don't think the pale king was jelous, that was merely his angered perception. when you find his "corpse" in the white palace and dream nail him, his thoughts are "no cost too great" and the things he did were of great cost. But this was still a good video

Why do you have such a low opinion of the king? By my view, he was driven to do the right thing, no matter the cost. This is justified, because his method is the only one that worked.

... Eventually. From what I understand, his plan didn't work, a byproduct of his plan worked. The Hollow Knight failed horribly, hence why your character is the one who stops the infection. So far as I can tell, the player character was never a part of the King's plan, he was just one of the 1000+ vessels that were discarded. (Or at least that's what I got from it, I've never actually played the game so I might be incredibly wrong.

Data Raven You got the lore right. However, the detail you missed is WHY the vessel failed. It wasn't because it was a bad plan, as we see with the ghost the plan works perfectly. The reason the hollow knight fail was because it wasn't entirely hollow. He made the mistake of loving his creation. The plan was perfect, but it failed because of a mistake on the King's part.

The Pale King presents a tricky question of ethics. Is it ethically justifiable to kill one group in order that another, much larger group might survive? The Pale King created and then discarded (either destroyed outright or locked in the Abyss to languish and die) untold thousands of Knights before finally settling on the (as he thought) perfect Hollow Knight. And then he damned the Hollow Knight to an eternity in chains, sealed up in the Black Egg, holding in the Radiance: basically, the Hollow Knight is in Hell, or at least some sort of Limbo. Lot of shitty stuff. BUT the King thought it was for the greater good. "No cost too great." He wasn't trying to be a sadist, he was trying to save the kingdom and his many subjects from what he saw as a fate worse than death. But I think lots of despots and autocrats genuinely thought they were doing the right thing, even as they killed thousands or even millions in the process. Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, they all probably really thought that their blood-soaked plans would save the world and that one day everyone would thank them.

One thing to note is that unlike the vessels, the bugs in the soul sanctum werent made to harness the power of soul. Thats why it twisted them. Only the vessels and the snail shaman are capable of using soul without harming themselves, which is why the bugs from the soul sanctum captured a shaman.

Unlike the liquid soul appears as for the knight, the scholars soul writhes within, deforming mind and body. Though how a pure focus would work confuses me. Considering a mind is needed to focus soul. Setting it still as liquid.

soul sanctum will always be one of my favorite places. we see shamans use soul in a seemingly natural way, and they have such great mastery over it it's a part of their culture. but the whole thing with the soul sanctum bugs is they take this natural force and twist it into something disturbing. dabbling in stuff they don't truly understand learning about the soul sanctum and what happened via context clues gave me such a unique feeling of dread. just the music, the design of the place and it's creatures, reading the records and finding out the disturbing truth. I still remember the first time I dreamnailed a "mistake" and it's dreamnail dialogue was "did it work...?" and that was when I realized what happened. then just reading the hunters journal on them and the records. realizing what those thousands of dead bugs are in the soul master fight, and realizing the mistakes and follies are a result of a bug being grossly deformed by the use of soul, all because they were so desperate

Both the shamans and scholar's spells are twisted. The first spell is literally called vengeful spirit. They are both impure (tainted by lingering essence). That is why it's so dangerous to a normal bug. It thrashes around like the void tendrils without a unified mind. Deforming a bug.

Question for anyone still watching: Do you think the Soul Master could focus Soul? There's a lot of debate on what Focus even is in HK. It is confirmed to be used only by the PC and THK, both "Vessels" that were literally made to contain Soul. In practise, they can Focus Soul that they've absorbed to repair their Shell, ie. restore health. In his fight, Soul Master's first death is a fake-out where he seems to come apart, but then suddenly rematerialises himself just before the Knight absorbs him. To my recollection, he is the only bug in the game to do that, and a lot of the lore around Soul Sanctum deals with obsessing over attaining "pure focus". Not to mention the connection between restoring health and "immortality". I think it's an interesting interpretation, that a regular Bug like Soul Master, with the atrocities committed and lifetimes worth of effort, could only manage a rudimentary form of "Focus", when creatures like the Knight can do so as easy as breathing.

I can explain. Focusing requires a unified mind. Soul only writhes within without focus. Like the void tendrils. Focusing sets the soul still as a liquid. There. That is focus.

Pure focus: It is the ability to focus impure soul without deformation. (Impure: containing lingering essence). The knight has a pure focus for all soul gathered is set still. So does the Pure Vessel. Without it the scholars became deformed by the lingering regrets within the soul.

And yes, the scholars can obviously focus soul. But not like the knight. The soul they take only writhes within, deforming them. So when this soul is casted from crest on their head, it twist and wobbles. The soul is not purified like the knights. You can even hear the whisper of bugs within the balls of soul, now with infection spreading in the middle.

I highly doubt it was Kong's jealously that made him reject the soul master. I mean, just because soul tyrants dialogue suggests it doesn't mean it's truth. I really don't think the king would reject a valid possibility to defeat the Radiance. I think that the soul is what empowers the Radiance, and that's why it would fail. Also that's why being bloated with the soul, Master became vunerable to the infection.

That kind of sounds like Dark Souls, given that the Abyss is.... an overabundance of humanity. If soul is empowering radiance, it seems to function similarly. Not to mention, it seems like those fighting against the Abyss (Abyss Watchers, Artiorias) are doomed to fall prey to it.

The irony that while the Pale King did indeed die it was really his method, his experiments that led to the ultimate end of the Radiance. I find it to be an interesting dynamic. I don't think the Radiance is more powerful than the Pale King but rather simply had an advantage over him with her ability to enter the minds of other creatures from a realm no one else could enter.

H. Feyn interestingly its likely that the soul master, similarly to the pale champion, went insane before they became infected. Throughout the battle you can hear talking from the soul master if you listen closely whilst he is staggered and whilst he fires attacks, as well as in the second half of the fight where it becomes more clear.

The Kickstarter funds are not representative of how much money they've made from Steam sales. In which, they've made easily over $1,000,000 by now.

There are ~550,000 owners on Steam, some were $15, some were $10 in sales, Steam takes 30% of all funds going towards games, so that's $10.50 for the $15 copies, and $7 for the $10 copies, let's say 30% were $10 copies, then they've made roughly $5.1M on this game, from Steam copies alone! (The $1,000,000 was a late night guess by myself.)

I know team cherry took lots of inspiration from dark souls...and after watching this, I’m wondering if they also took inspiration from bloodborne as the parallels are striking similar. This story is essentially the same as brygenwerth and the splintered factions that came from blood healing and healing church vs the ascendency and evolution scholars of brywenwerth. So essentially the struggle between the void and light that was the battle between the old way(radiance) and the new (pale king). Either way, fascinating.

@Rusty Molboxer: Hey and thanks for the good videos on Hollow Knight so far! Regarding the sale figures: I don't know where you're taking those numbers from. Team Cherry just announced in one of their latest blog posts, that Hollow Knight sold more than half a million copies. The recent numbers on Steam Spy say that it's even 550.000 copies owned world wide. Those numbers multiplied by the 15$ price is 8.250.000$. While this information is not public, it is estimaed that Valve takes about 40% of the money on small indie developers for distribution on Steam. (I suppose it's the same for the Humble Bundle store, just with a different share - and a little bit less for GOG.) That would still be ~5.000.000$ for Team Cherry before taxes etc. Now the price of 15$ is misleading, because in some regions the game costs more (like 15€), in others less. Maybe I forgot something important. So to be very generous, let's cut that number in half. That would still be 2.500.000$ for Team Cherry. So all those old Kickstarter stretch goals really won't matter anymore. ;) ...and I'm very happy and glad for them, that their amazing game sold so well, that they definitely can continue to develop in the future! :)

Team Cherry is Australian I think, and 15 US dollars is 19 AUD, so they make about $11.40 for every game sold.

I was talking about US dollars here. Game costs 15€ for me in Europe. International price reference definitely is 15 USD. Do you know how much the game costs in Australia then? Is it 15 AUD or 20? I have to wonder what the voice speaking to the Soul Master was. I mean, from what we can understand The Radiance doesn't speak or communicate, it's more of an unimaginable force that bends those to it's will. And why would it attempt to bolster the defenses of the Soul Master? We know it didn't work in the end, but if the King was jealous that must mean that it would have worked or at least shown promise. We don't know any other entity that enters dreams but The Radiance, the Moths, and whoever wields the Dream Nail.

ZanzaKlaus the Soul Master mentions having a dream. The Raidance appeared to the infected bugs as a light in there dreams. So it's pretty much confirmed that it was the Radiance who was talking to the Soul Master

ZanzaKlaus The Radience manipulated the soul master and tried to get them to use soul to weaken the minds of the kingdom without him knowing. Him being exposed to large amounts allowed him to easily be taken over. The king might have known the outcome so he rejected it, but the soul master believed it was jealousy.

ZanzaKlaus no it was definitely the radiance. The soul master said he saw it in his dreams and dreams is how the radiance gets to you. And the radiance does speak and communicate to infected bugs. We can dream nail the radiance to get dialogue and dream nailing Myla can get dialogue from the radiance itself as in the radiance is speaking to Myla.

I got a question - Who do you think do we actually see while being lured by Nosk? From the dead bodies around we can figure out that people chased their long dead loved once. But we see a Hollow Knight.

I think nosk imitated the Little Ghost for two reasons. One is that since the Ghost is made out of void, it has "no mind to think, no will to break", and thus Nosk couldn't figure out what its desire was and thus just mimicked it to try to get it to be curious. The other reason is that maybe the Little Ghost wanted a companion, another Ghost to help it, so that it could more efficiently seal/kill the Radiance. (im calling the player character the Little Ghost because thats hornet's nickname for it)

I mostly agree with callie. Because the Knight is 'hollow' so it has no legitimate mind. Thus the only person it would physically be able to recognise is itself so Nosk took the only creature the Knight's mind could fathom. While you could say that they may recognise indivisuals like Hornet, just remember we made those friendships. The Knight's just along for the ride.

I have an explanation. (Impure soul: containing lingering essence) Void theory: a pool of regret (impure soul) will eventually turn to void. Subjection to impure soul turned the shaman to void. As the name implies, literally turning his soul to shade, or void.

painhellemental 9000 no he isn’t. When you talk to the snail shaman after getting descending dive and dark the shaman says that his third uncle and aunt possessed those abilities. This is not because he’s related to the Master but because the abilities were stolen from the Shamans. We know the scholars were experimenting on them since we find one strapped up to an examination table.

That was from the first HK trailer a couple years ago haha. But I'm guessing it would take a lot of screenshotting parts of the map and stitching the images together into one giant image that contains the whole area. So then you can zoom out and have it look like that. But they have the source files so it was probably a lot easier for them, lol.

That clip was from when Hollow Knight was still being developed in Stencyl. I doubt that the game could do that now and still look good. There's a lot of foreground and background objects that wouldn't look right if the screen was zoomed out like that

I don't think Wyrm was jealous of the Soul Master. I always saw that piece of dialogue pointing to his concern for the citizens of Hallownest. Kind of interesting how he was willing to sacrifice his own children but drew the line when it came to common bugs. He truly cared for them.

The king does not care. People keep thinking that. He was jealous cause they managed to achieve a pure focus before him. Allowing the vessels to focus impure soul without a without mind. (Which confuses me). We see this with the pure vessel and its soul attacks. All soul will contain lingering essence (impurity). With a pure focus it is not affected, keeping it pure.

Those stretch goals are straight-up emotionally manipulative. I've had an incredible experience with the story and characters, and it feels so scummy that some of that story is hidden behind $10k+ paywalls after already being so invested in the game.
