For every boss that gives me trouble, I go full health build with Joni's Blessing and other health charms. That forces me to focus on dodging and learning attack patterns instead of trying to heal. And with 22 masks you can take a lot of damage before dying, which gives you a lot of time on every attemp to just observe the boss and get familiar with everything he does.

It wasn't cool of me to state how many attempts it took because everyone experiences these bosses differently. Your journey with this fight is your own. It sounds like you are making progress and I know you will beat NKG. 🙂

I just found and completed this boss today! Grimm was always one of my favourite fights, and NKG just took it to that next level! I definitely agree with the firebat tip of ignoring the first, jumping over the second, and then dashing. If you're quick it's also possible to jump over NKG and pogo as he dashes underneath you (during either of his Dash attacks), which is just one more way to deal damage. Technically Sharp Shadow will grant you the same effect, but this way you save some charm slots.

Ah. Nightmare king grimm. When I fought him I finally understood what grimm meant by it being a dance in the first battle. Truly a good fight. It's not unfair even though there is 2 damage because his attacks are not hard to read once you know them. It can get very fun once you get used to the fight. It's a battle of keeping up with the pace and a slow down can mean your end. I love the battle because of this.

A great area to heal is jumping over his first fire bat, which makes his second one fly OVER your head, allowing you to heal once.

I know this is a year late, but I really, really appreciate this guide. I got into Hollow Knight extremely late and I struggled hard on most of the fights, but this one took me forever. This guide motivated and taught me most of this attacks, and I finally defeated him after a 2 hour play session. I've now gotten much more consistent with it, and I am currently working on beating that cursed 5th pantheon. So, thank you!! Keep it up :)

Thanks for all the tips ! What helped me most is to experiment learning "only" to dodge with as max life as possible, I used all 3 charms that give life including but not limited to joni's blessing. This helped me survive more in beginning and thus learn the enemy attacks faster with slower deaths. I used to lose in 5-10 seconds tops (no comment). It took more than 20-30 tries but once I was able to reliably pass the 2nd puffer phase with my low damage (zero charms for damage after all), I figured it was time to switch to a normal setup with more dps. I utilized the hiveblood charm for my healing needs and it worked amazingly well because at that point you are good enough to not be hit constantly every few seconds so its a win win. Hiveblood + sharp shadow (amazing extra damage once you learn how to time it on the enemy dash uppercut attack especially), and unbreakable strength (obvious damage reasons). This is what did it for me. It did not take a lot of tries with hiveblood. It felt from beginning that it's doable. I would like to note that with this strategy I never even used spells apart of an odd heal during his stagger phase. Healing was not really needed hiveblood took care of it thankfully. This is actually a super hard boss to try to heal. I have no idea how people are so good to be able to time even their heals in such an intense fight where every split second can mean loss of 2 life, but for me this was 100% impossible. Yes I am very bad with spells and this includes attack spells, I have to say spells in this game are simply not for me. I wish I could use them better, but it seems like I am simply a nail guy. (lol) Granted, its not like I never tried to use them, I am just so bad at them that all that animation messes up my eye and hand coordination and I always end up doing crap losing life after casting almost anything (yes in most hard bosses that much is true). Unfortunately I don't use nail arts either, its simply too hard for my controls, again messes me up. I would also like to note that for me, the hardest enemy attack to dodge but also get a hit in, was by far the diagonal dash attack. Super fast, doesn't leave room for any error, the fire trail left behind is beyond annoying and in the end the only way I was able to avoid it was just jump or dash away fast enough and then jump and dash in the opposite direction. Under no circumstances was I able to throw a hit in during this phase except very rare cases where I ended up just by luck pogoing on standing grimm before he disappeared. This doesnt always work and can easily be self-hit instead. But who cares I just beat this, and I never thought I could do it! After doing this, hopefully Radiance and the 3rd pantheon at least become also beatable. :D My next goals. ^^ Thanks again.

Well done beating NKG! 😃 And that is such a great strategy: taking all life-boosting Charms to survive as long as possible and learn his attacks. 🙂

turns out i faught nightmare king grimm before i battled the radience and of course i failed many many times and thats what made the boss fight so good the difficulty and its design and how it plays into the story and gives off more lore than just a random dlc team cherry has created one of my favorite games of all time and really changed my perspective as a gamer

Excellent breakdown - thanks for all your hard work!! :D NKG is still above my pay grade, but as per usual this series is making me want to try again. Having a video like this to refer to honestly helps a lot in dealing with the anxiety of super tough fights.

I personally used an extremely offence-based loadout for Nightmare King Grimm, using all 11 charm notches to equip Soul Eater, Shaman Stone, Sharp Shadow and Fragile Strength. I often got in as maximum hits as i could during every one of his attacks and soon learned how to easily respond and evade every single one of his attacks. When i beat him for the first time, i did it HITLESS. For the dash uppercut attack, i used Sharp Shadow to dash through his dash, turned around and matched his jump to land another hit on him while he was uppercutting, then dodged the fireballs. For the Dive Dash attack, i dashed in the opposite direction he was tilting at, then jumped and tried to pogo off of him while he was dashing. If i missed i would use Monarch Wings to stay in the air for longer till the first flame trail disappeared to safely land. For the Flame Pillars attack, I walked slowly to him for the first two flame pillars, inbetween the second and thrid, hit him once, then Abyss Shrieked on him and shadow dashed to avoid the third pillar. I then landed one more nail hit on him, then jumped into the air, evading the fourth pillar, and using Shade Soul on him. For the Cloak Spikes attack, i just evaded it and healed once if i needed it. For the flame bats attack, as soon as he started I used Sharp Shadow's extended dash reach to cover the entire distance of the gap between all four bats, then landed three nail hits on him. For the pufferfish attack, i took it safe and evaded them.
