Personally i think both games are pretty great for their own reasons, none of them are better than the other because both are amazing games. Sure some people wont like how challenging hollow knight can be, but different charm setups and abilities can make it easier for the player. Plus i find it really neat that some of your abilities in hollow knight are used for both combat and movement/platforming (the nail can hurt enemies but can also be used to bounce on spikes. the dive can damage fragile floors and anything trying to kill you. even your ability to dash can be used to fight with a specific charm on,) Hollow knight is really efficient and effective with its controls. I havent really looked at ori and the blind Forrest for a few years, but its still a really gorgeous looking game

Lore and story are different
@lindylou5384 жыл бұрын
@@thomasray yeah but the story is about the lore
@thomasray4 жыл бұрын
@@lindylou538 I think of lore as the story of the world, whereas "story" is about the character we play as. In Hollow Knight, the story is about a little cute creature proving his intentions to Hornet, finding and fighting the Hollow Knight, and in some endings defeating the radiance and infection altogether. The massive lore behind it makes it more interesting, gives it flavor. It explains why we are who we are, how the kingdom fell apart, what we're made of, all that jazz. Whether or not you agree with everything above, you've gotta admit that both exploration and combat take priority in Hollow Knight, with a story present for people who care to look for it. This is supported by the sometimes non-linear and diverging paths different players may take, as well as the many optional bosses and areas that some people may never find. The story is flexible, changing based on how the player explores and what they're willing to fight. The game wants you to explore the world more than it wants you to experience a story. Unlike Ori. Ori has a very linear path, character deaths and character arcs. There are flashbacks to explain the villain's motives, and an emotional ending that explains itself. The combat is weak, the exploration is--like I said before--linear. You're there for the story, and the secrets are there to make that journey interesting. Another reason I think Ori is more story focused than Kollow Knight is the 10+ minute intro cutscenes. It doesn't drop you into a room with one enemy and one secret and say "play the game" like Hollow Knight does. It says "here, you are a leaf from a magical tree. Here's why you were happy, here's why you should be sad. Here's Naru, here's the great tree, and here's Ori, that's you. Something happened to the tree and you need to fix it." Intros/tutorials are important and game devs know that, resulting typically in very intentional areas that set an expectation for what the game's gonna be like for the next few hours. Just comparing the two shows the different intentions of the devs Ori is more story focused by a mile. Doesn't mean it's better, doesn't mean it's worse. Also, with ori, I feel like the movement itself takes first prize. Bash feels SO GOOD. Most of the upgrades are to expand your moveset. (Dash, bash, gliding, wall jump, etc...) the glorious movement is there for movement's sake and it feels AMAZING.

I played HK recently and am in the middle of my first playthrough of Ori right now and just cannot seem to get into to it. The loose controls contrast HK in a way that is not really appealing to me. I try to focus more on the visuals, story, and platforming aspects of the game but the movement and combat are just so severely lacking. However, it looks like Will of the Wisps has implemented some HK mechanics which may have addressed some of the gripes I have with the original game as it stands.

How was Hollow Knight's true final boss too cryptic to find? You only need the awoken dream nail (literally just a few secrets and minibosses to get essence which the moth npc tells you where and how to collect anyway) and the voidheart, which is just another NPC you'll also probably find anyway, a platforming area that's really straight forward (it's not a maze or anything) that's 'hidden' inside a corpse that you're probably curious about since you first find it and literally has a shield appear around it if you hit it with the normal dream nail, and the way around it being the awoken dream nail is hinted at the moment you get it The game is a lot more cryptic than that most of the time

Ori was fun to play, but let's be honest here, it doesn't hold a candle to HK. In general I think that Ori doesn't have all that much to offer when compared to some of the other 2D platformers. It's strongest asset are visuals, but that's about it (I must say I haven't played it in a while though). If you like platforming then you should try Celeste. If you like boss fights then go for HK or Cuphead. Note that all these games are much harder to beat though. So I guess one '+' for Ori would be that it is a more relaxing experience.
