I think you are missing something? My understanding is that the invisibility serum in Hollow Man that causes rage and aggression is a side effect that progressively gets worse. I believe they explain it with the ape. It isnt JUST his spiral into madness due to him not being able to get back to visible form.
@BigSlimyBlob5 ай бұрын
They mention something about the ape's behavior getting more hostile, but they're not sure if it's just because she's been experimented on (the serum is extremely painful), or because she can't see herself. And once we learn that affected beings can't block light (it goes through their eyelids, they can't put their hands over their eyes and facing away doesn't do anything because the light goes through their heads), it's easy to understand why she might have been going crazy. To this day I have no idea if the serum really does cause aggression. Maybe that's canonized in the sequel.

Jesus, those effects are amazing! Not just the transformation, but the invisibility itself. The hollow eyeholes in the latex mask, just perfect. I really like older CGI movies where there was a limited number of computer generated shots against real sets and real old school cinema magic. Nowadays so much is done in post that not only does the quality suffer but also CGI is so ubiquous that it looses all impact. A cool thing on the screen is no longer cool just normal. Impressive effect work is no longer proudly centered by the film language like it used to. Might just be my feelings tho. It should be mentioned tho that nowadays lackluster CGI is not the fault of artists, but of their higher ups exploiting and overworking them.

I actually prefer Cronenberg's "The Fly" which shares many similarities with this one (remake of SF classic, self-absorbed scientist, animal testing, self-experiments, moral decline of the protagonist, love triangle). While I do recognize what Verhoeven was trying to achieve with Hollow Man, it just does not work out for me as well as Cronenberg's "The Fly" on an emotional level. One of the reasons why Cronenberg's "The Fly" is so effective is that the protagonist's gradual moral decline coincides with his physical decay.

I remember watching this movie for the first time when I was in my teens about over 10 years ago and I was immediately fascinated with it. It makes a good double feature with Splice (2009), a movie where the trailer happens to go in front of every movie that was released around that time. I love that movie too. I would definitely recommend you checking it out. It doesn't hold back! Also, one of two movies where I like Josh Brolin (the other one is Into The Blue)

I agree the movie has some pretty evident flaws, but I admire Verhoeven’s concept for a re-adaptation and casting Bacon was just perfect to play on that charisma but remembering he was a terrible guy in “Sleepers”. Plus the effects for the time were well executed (yes quite dated now in 2022)

Tarantino's Death Proof accomplishes something similar. It's a 2-act movie where we spend act one getting to know a group of characters before the villain kills them, then spends a chunk of act 2 putting us in the villain's POV, making us complicit in his violence.

This was the first horror movie I remember watching as a child. Totally accidentally but absolutely intrigued by the movie. Couldn’t find it for years because no internet and no idea how to find the movie. Then found it again years later. Pretty classic movie. Also, why tf did you blur the skeleton pelvis in the intro shot of the video?

I genuinely love this film and think it's one of the best films of 2000, along with probably the 3rd best Invisible Man adaptation

I never took this movie as saying it all went wrong because of Kevin Bacon's character, but because this sort of power would drive anyone mad. Which is way scarier. It's not "this tech could be bad if it gets into the wrong hands", but more "humanity full-stop shouldn't have this tech, it'll always be bad" Also as a Dutch person (like Verhoeven): it's pronounced ver-hoof-en. The Dutch "oe" sound is like the English "oo" sound in roof, hoof, booth. (and funnily enough we pronounce a double-o as "oh") As a big fan of his work that drives me kinda mad when I meet English speaking fans ;)

I never though of this movie as an invisible man adaptation. I have a distinct memory of watching this with my brother at night when we’re suppose to be asleep.

After covering this film, I would love to hear your thoughts on Verhoeven's Starship Troopers(1997)! There are so many layers to it, and it is one of my favorite films.

I honestly think its a fun take on the orginal. It doesn't compare to the original but it's not trying to in my opinion. It's honestly so campy and such a 2000s movie to me. I enjoyed it alot.

"Exploring Paul Verhoeven's ugly adaptation of the invisible man" would have been a more apt title. Verhoeven touch is all over this movie, storyboard, choice of D.O.P. , choice of Bacon as the main protagonist, VFX, themes and such.

Hollow man ending up blinded and/or missing limbs would have been quite something. Surviving, but barely a threat without a very visible wheelchair/prosthetic leg. And himself blind. Needing help, inevitably ending up with the government.

I have seen the second hollow Man movie. One thing I can say is that there is an interesting scene where Christian Slater's hollow Man is talking nonchalantly to a woman in an elevator, the only time we kind of see him as human. Then it turns out the only reason he doesn't necessarily kill her was because she was blind.
@sirdidymus242 жыл бұрын
I agree with your “fanfic.” That’s a much more suitable punishment for Bacon’s character and it would be so much scarier that the formula is still out there, possibly being used by the military.

So, I first watched this film back in 2021 on recommendation from a friend. She had it on her list of favorite horror movies. (It wasn’t at the top of the list, it was just on the list) The opening scene with the gorilla had me in hysterics. The acting was good, the effects were still great. I just lost my mind at the idea of a defibrillator being used on a invisible gorilla. It was the concept that was ridiculous to me. And then I watched as the film progressed with Crane losing his already unstable mind to the body horror in which he’d subjected himself. And then I saw the home invasion scene and remembered exactly what kind of movie I stepped into. That tense buildup, ultimately ending in that terrifying moment is what sticks with me today. Go for the gorilla antics, stay for the horror. 10/10.

Okay but can we talk about how clever the title actually is? Because Bacon's character is figuratively hollow, a shell of a man who is not nearly as complex as he thinks he is, then he becomes literally hollow when he becomes invisible, silly but very clever

A decade earlier, Bacon after having starred in iconic teen angst films, took a look at his then pregnant wife, and fell to the sidewalk then curled up into a fetal position. He had a panic attack and said, "I have a wife and a baby, and I'm starring in a movie about giant worms under the ground!" He agonized over the direction his career had taken and worried about being able to support a family. Fortunately for him, Tremors turned out to be a hit.

That's definitely an interesting take on the Kevin Bacon film. I don't know that I agree with it but it's definitely a take. I always saw it as more of a classic somebody hubris turns them into a monster. Kevin Bacon thinks he's God's gift to the planet, can do no wrong and people are fools to disagree with him. The consequence of going invisible and having issues like not being able to close your eyes slowly drives him insane. Sleep deprivation can drive people over the edge very easily, so for him it's almost impossible for him to get any sleep. What we see isn't necessarily excusing his behavior, but it exasperates it. Essentially, becoming invisible and the pain and suffering that comes with it pushes him over the edge and disables what little bit he had in the way of a moral compass. Because he definitely had one, he didn't do his worst things until he realized nobody could see him and he had gone a few days. It's for that reason I really don't have any interest in seeing last year's adaptation of the invisible man. I don't particularly want to see what amounts to a drama about a woman being stalked by a creeper. That sounds very much like something of its time and I don't feel like being preached to. When I watch a movie based off of a classic science fiction and a classic movie monster. Sometimes that's all you want

I found it kinda weird that they addressed that his eyelids are invisible so light goes right through them, but not that his lenses are invisible so they can’t focus light or that his retinas are invisible so they can’t catch light.
