*For full transparency, Universal flew me out to London for a preview screening followed by an interview with Leigh, Jason and Oliver. I didn't let this impact my opinion of the film - I will take any excuse to meet creators that inspire my love for the genre. It's thanks to all of you for watching that this opportunity was even possible so thank you again for letting me do this as a f*cking job!

The ads look a bit goofy, but I really really liked Upgrade so I was always gonna be interested in Whannel’s next project regardless. Also, I remember laughing hysterically throughout the trailer for Don’t Breathe before seeing the film and being really into it. I think certain movies are just really difficult to sell through short form soundbites removed from context, but giving too much context can give the whole thing away. There are a lot of really poorly edited trailers today, but there are also a lot of cases where after seeing a full film I don’t envy whoever had to cut a preview for it.

A lot of film channels make film feel really inaccessible, YMS for example, while I do enjoy his work he makes a lot of film feel inaccessible bc of they way he talks about it. Ryan makes it feel so accessible and safe and also acknowledges when something is more complicated and/or pretentious than what the average audience may be used to and also very much gives an air of "I know this thing isnt for everyone, I'm just talking about it because i enjoy it/found something worth talking about in it"

I couldn’t believe Upgrade was made for only $3 million. Looking back, there’s nothing that would be too crazy expensive, but the action is just so well done that it doesn’t feel like you’re watching something on a budget. With the premise and setting it could’ve easily ballooned into this overblown cyberpunk epic that was trying to do more than its budget would allow, but he knew how to keep it small scale enough that it just feels really polished and professional and most importantly engaging. Probably took some notes from his involvement with the first Saw on how to make a movie on a budget.

I just saw this and it was fantastic! One of the best horror/thrillers I've seen in years! Amazing perfomances for Cecilias actress and Griffins. To me there was something haunting about Griffins lab in the film. In addition to the creepy voyeuristic implications of the suit, it felt almost taboo, a veritable Pandoras Box of tech ripe for abusing. I left wondering how many suits he actually had and whether or not he had other labs and other people under his thrall. The fact that stealth suit technology is likely being researched as we speak only makes it more frightening to think about.

I rewatched it a couple of days ago and I was genuinely surprised to see Blumhouse's logo in the opening of the film. To be honest they've done a few good films in the past. It's not a horror film but they did do BlacKkKlansman. They also did the 2018 Halloween reboot/sequel. The Purge wasn't a bad film. Split was a surprisingly decent M Night Shyamalan film. They also did Get Out which is a great film as well. So despite shit like Insidious and it's sequels as well as Truth or Dare and Unfriended Dark Web, they've released some pretty damn good stuff.

To be honest, I think a mistake with this film is with its name. Instead of calling it the Invisible Man, they could of just called it something else. I know that the directors had to make reboot of the Invisible Man but it sort of resembles it own thing. In fact I would argue that the movie Hollow Man was more of a direct reboot/remake of the original man than this movie. Apart of the invisibility element, it does sound like that the film stands out as it own idea rather than being just reboot of the invisible man.

Then, I tried to tell friends about it after I saw it, and they were very skeptical because “the trailers look so cheesy”. And I couldn’t help but think how meta that was. Maybe I’m reading too far into it, but its almost like the trailers set you up for that skepticism. If you only see the surface level (through the trailer), you never get to see just how scary it is underneath. Just like abusive relationships.

So jealous you got to meet and interview em! Just saw the movie and Leigh is one to look out for after Upgrade and this! Loved this movie. It did not have much studio interference as clearly he did what he wanted. Such a great film! Did not seem like 2 hour film at all! Enjoy his style also with this and Upgrade. Look forward to his next one.

When she Cecilia went to the restaurant, my Dad, cousin and uncle and I all had our jaws dropped! Amazing movie, and it was genuinely painful to watch at times with it's realistic pretrial of domestic abuse.. with Elisabeth Moss in particular doing an awesome job!

The thumbnail of your video reminded me to watch the movie x) I just finished it and I loved it ! Its good to see an intelligent way of talking about domestic abuse and women emancipation rather than the frontal and head smashing approach that is usually used. Good video ! Hope you can do this job for a long time !

I love Elizabeth Moss. Really happy to hear this film is so good. Honestly I kind of liked the idea of a Monster-verse (so to speak), and wouldn't hate if they returned to it someday BUT focused on the films being closer to what this film looks to be like. Horror and thrillers would be much better suited for monsters since, you know, they're supposed to kind of be scary.

I was pumped for the idea of a dark universe but they tried to jump into the concept too soon to compete with Disney and Warner. Trying to do in 1 movie what marvel did in 5 was always gonna be a mess. Such a disappointment. I'm glad Leigh got to take a crack at it. Great movie.

Honestly is it even an allegory when it's that explicit and (forgive me) transparent? That alone was enough for me to take one look at the trailer and realize it would be really scary.

There was an episode of Buffy with an invisible girl who was ignored and treated like she didn't exist. And because of the power of Sunnydale's Hellmouth being treated like she was invisible made her actually become invisible. There was also a Batman the Animated Series episode called See No Evil where a criminal steals his scientist boss's invisibility plastic which he uses to steal things and give to his daughter while pretending to be her imaginary friend. His wife rightly got a restraining order against him but the suit made that useless and he eventually kidnaps his daughter but Batman eventually stops the guy using a water tower to make him visible before kicking the shit out of him. And Elizabeth Moss who plays Cecilia in this voiced the daughter.

When I found out this was a Blumhouse movie, I assumed it was going to be a shitty jumpscare fest, but the movie is an amazing psychological sci-fi thriller and I loved watching it. The whole first half I was wondering if PTSD had her imagining things and that the audience was seeing through her paranoid eyes. Then when she throws the paint and we finally get confirmation that she was RIGHT, I about lost my shit. Don't even get me started on the sister throat cut, I was so surprised I remember literally gasping and throwing my hands up. There's a few scenes in this movie that seem to drag on in the beginning when it's establishing the characters, but other than that, it's absolutely phenomenal. I'm sure even if you rewatch this 100 times, you'll never be able to figure out which scenes Adrian were actually in the background of and which were just paranoia.

My huge ploblems with this movie is that we know everything. The best thing they could have done was to show us in the trailes that maybe it is all in her head and the reveal that he did really become invisible to be a huge surprise and the whole movie to make as question if she is mad or there really is an invisible man.But the trailers pretty much showed me everything i need to know sadly.

Every critic that shit on the mummy said that if universal wanted to make a "dark universe" they should just follow the blumhouse model and make a horror movie. And that's what they did. And it fucking worked.

The trailer wasn’t great, and I genuinely couldn’t tell if it was going to be good or not. But as soon as I heard that it’s from the same director as Upgrade, I was sold. I’ve always loved Leigh Whannell’s work, even when it wasn’t good. (To his credit, he didn’t actually direct Insidious: The Last Key, but even that movie still had a lot of inherently cool things going for it.) And now with Upgrade and The Invisible Man under his belt, I’m 100% down for anything that he does next. Also, thank you for your work, Ryan! I love your videos. They always help me to find more to appreciate about the movies I already love, and point me to more movies I will then come to appreciate.

really dig the pacing with this movie, its tense from the get go, even tho its a bit long, they could chop a few 10-15min off but other than that its brilliant. also i love the camera work, they kept leaving out wide empty space in the frame and the camera keeps panning and moving into some empty spot before the actual (and visible) characters walks there. it sort of gives the invisible man a new dimension of existance. what looks like that they kept panning into some empty hallways, but theyre actually following the invisible man. idk thats a small details that i like from this movie. i didnt watch the trailer and i watched it with my dad yesterday (he really dont like horror and thrillers but i dragged him to the theatres anyway) and it was great and my dad ended up liking it so thats that. plus the guy made upgrade, i freaking adore that movie. ill be sure to keep a tab for his new releases in the future!
