I knew there was something about him that made him interesting. In addition to what happened during the Ark sealing, I think Oswald took it into his own hands to make the order to lock them in order for him to take the brunt of the hatred from Goddess squad, making it softer for mankind as a whole.

In Chapter 23 (The Forgotten Name in the archives) Poli and Miranda are showing Dorothy around the ark when they come across a goddess statue, and the following conversation takes place: Dorothy: "Why have they erected these statues?" Poli: "they're the saviors of humankind" "They volunteered to remain on the surface and fight until the bitter end, all in order to keep mankind safe" "There used to be a person who proactively spread the gospel of the Goddess squad, but ever since they passed away, the information has been lost to time" Dorothy "Could you give me their name, by any chance?" Poli says she wasn't sure what their name was, but It's my head cannon that it was Oswald, fits him perfectly. I don't believe Oswald took any joy in closing the Goddess's out of the Ark. Seeing as how the Central Government was willing to kill Counters and the Commander just for a chance to experiment on Marian, I am 100% convinced that Oswald locked them out to protect them. They were his heroes, but in that moment, when he closed that door, I'm sure he felt like a defeated man with his hands tied behind his back, from their perspective, he had doomed them to eternal exile on the surface. Many of us were so quick to hate on him after Overzone, and understandably so, but now we've seen him as the fanboy he is, in REDASH we even see him salute Red Hood, which might not look significant on the surface, but to most of humanity, Nikke's are just weapons, tools to be used, so for Oswald to salute one, that he far outranks as well, is a fantastic flavor to his character. Oswald really was a hero. What a character.

What I love about that scene is that, even not having the name of the person in question, Dorothy has a visible suspicion it might've been Oswald and you can tell she is rethinking placing him initially on her revenge list, despite how long her grudge is by that point.

I find it poetic that Abe said it was easier for humanity to pin their hatred on the monster Anachiro rather than a horde of mindless Raptures, even though there was more to her than meets the eye. It’s also an allegory for how it was easier for us, the players, and Dorothy to pin our hatred on Oswald rather than the nameless figures in the Ark and the Central Government. Likewise, It’s ironic that Doro’s weapon is called “Ungrateful Oz” - when we first played Overzone we are led to believe that it was a nod towards his betrayal of Goddess, but the reality couldn’t be further from the truth. Under a different set of circumstances they could have become the staunchest of allies - a soldier who loved the Goddesses, and a Goddess who wanted to be loved, but fate placed them on opposite sides of the fence. Oz, we are grateful.

This, Ozwald himself suggested that the mission was to execute Anachiro alongside the 2nd Grimms generation, wiping all of theirs and Abe's name clean, making Cinderella the scapegoat to protect her comrades. He used that plan himself and willing to become the scapegoat for Dorothy's hatred, making someone who he idolized hate him for the actions of the CG

It always seemed he was sent by himself to talk for his higher-ups when it came to the Grimms. His was an unfortunate role through and through.

I've never believed that Oswald was a bad person past his introduction, i believe he's someone who sees past the the almost sacrificial view the other members of the government had and wanted to do more to help the real heroes but couldn't because he wasn't the highest ranking member and in turn was forced to listen to thise orders as it wouldn't mean anything if he didn't because they can just use someone else, at least if he did the orders he could complie maliciously and do (how little much) the right thing and set things on the right path as much as possible He's not a bad guy he's just someone who is forced to take the worst actions because others have already let their hopelessness and rage dictate their actions

I totally think that the Central government was going to try to reverse-engineer the goddess squad if they were to enter the Ark. A lot of scientists were killed before Ark Guardian happened. so maybe they had no talent that could make something on the same level. Kinda like Obadiah's scientists couldn't make a miniature ark reactor in the first Iron man movie. Oswald was probably aware of this, and thus decided to lock the goddess squad out.

I got the idea that he just fully understood that if they got inside, CentGov would immediately use them as scapegoats to blame for having to move underground in the first place BEFORE they had a chance to sway public opinion and undermine the gov's authority. It was safer for them to keep them outside where they could at least "be free"

When Snow White asked if Oswald was acting alone or was it the will of the people. He answered the latter. I would believe that the CG would do what you said if Oswald answered "the former" which would imply that they would be safer in the lone wasteland that is the surface over a lab

Scarlet's bond story actually supports this idea. In the first episode of the bond story when Privaty, who works for the CG, turns up she claims "We've received reports of a Pilgrim (Scarlet) is regularly spotted at the outpost" and "Pilgrims are essential assets" it really does reinforce the idea they would experiment on them. Even more so when you remember the CG was more than willing to eliminate Counters and the Commander for even a chance to experiment on Marian.

Something I noticed today: the central government has been trying and failing to replicate the success of the Grimms model Nikkes ever since. If you look, Noah is very similar in concept to Cinderellas kit, and Maiden is almost exactly the same as Little Mermaid, just with no ability to influence raptures with her voice, only Nikkes. There are probably more subtle examples of this elsewhere too.

I like to think there was a glimmer of respect for Oswald from Dorothy's eyes when she saw the Goddess Statues in the Ark. She may still hate him but at least she saw his attempt at atonement and undoing his greatest past mistake. It's because of Oswald that the Ark knew of the Goddess Squad and what they fought for. And every worthy hero deserves it's monument. So he did whatever he could to honour the Goddesses. And help Old Tales.

as soon as I saw Oswald show up in old tales taking place at the same time as ark guardian it all clicked in my head that that's why they could not contact the ark. All they ever heard from was oswald and he had been out on the surface doing this. Everyone was trying to forget the goddess squad but Oswald at bear minimum felt he had to relay something, hence the moral gray zone.

That make sense and further adds to the information delays they had whenever Dorothy tried to make contact. He's out and about trying to help whomever didn't make it into the arc in time or finding materials, then only replying once mes made it with coms range. It also checks out since that would be the safest way for him to relay ANY info about what was going on since there's a possibility that CG would have either not cared enough to contact them after calling back Liliwise to defend the entrance and with him also assisting Cinderella and her crew with their storming of the orbital elevator around that same time. 😮

Given Oswald's position and circumstance, he tried his best. and that's from someone like me who tries to understand Military Chain of command. Oswald only did what was commanded by his Higher ups, but in the end, he tried to bring the best of the Goddess squad and that in my book is great. Oswald was one of the characters I intitally judged very hard. Despite knowing him to be only a messenger and working on orders, his almost condescending, ungrateful and arrogant tone made me believe he was a bad guy during Over Zone. Especially so, because he did not give a more proper explaination to the betrayal and only responded regarding the decision making upon Snow White's request. In Red Ash and the Main Story complimentary informations, my harsh judgement began to loosen. I recognized Oswald as a way more morally grey person who indeed, only wanted good for the Goddess squad and humanity. He did not deceived the Goddess squad because he wanted to. And during moments he were able to make decisions with greater merit for humanity and neglible consequences, he decided to ignore orders. Old Tales cemented his character even more positively. He has proven himself to be someone, who attempted all that he could, do help the Goddess Squad and eventually the Old Tales squad. Believing in Cinderella who only a few weeks before was corrupted and massacring humans and Nikke alike required either unrivaled naivety or hope. God, I wish he was deployed as an security and counterintelligence officer the first day, the Grimms project and Corruption research started. He could have catched Fraud Shoes on the very first day, finding out about her ulterior motives and send her to the gallows. Security protocols should be a given in high stake projects. You want to ensure 100% reliability of your working personnel and prevent any sabotage or possible leak of sensitive information. However the higher ups slept on that, allowing Red sus to do all the vile research in secrecy she needed to enact her plan, that eventually culiminated in one of humanity's strongest trump card become that of the enemy. It is comparable to someone letting an unchecked psychopath enter and work at a bioweapon lab or nuclear arsenal. That is asking for disaster to happen.

I think VTC is not working for humanity and that Red Shoes was set up to be the scapegoat of their corurption experiments. I suspect Cinderella and her squad, maybe even all the Grimm models, were always intended to be corrupted.

Considering that O:1 (allegedly Oswald) had to use an insider to help investigate Red Shoes' secret research (and Oswald still arrived late nonetheless), and the fact that Hansel and Gretel were able to be manufactured to completion without the united government's knowledge, the security protocol of said facility is pretty good to say the least. Secrets certainly didn't easily get out of that place. Besides, Abe had mentioned that the higher ups were having difficulty on deciding who has the right for which technology used to help create and manufacture the generation 2. So I guess United Government's hand was also tied in the matter of structuring the security protocol for the facility in order to maintain neutrality. Regarding Red Shoes, she was originally a V.T.C. scientist just like Abe and Rapunzel. And considering she knew both Abe and Rapunzel, she must've been decently high on the pyramid, albeit not enough to have any real pull on the situation in the grand scheme of things. Her background kinda helped her credibility.

They serve multiple purposes including the prevention of sabotage and the leakage of sensitive information into unwanted hands. The client in the meanwhile must be informed about all matters of the project, which in this case is the United Forces of Humanity and V.T.C. Both institutions were totally unaware of Hansel and Gretel, as well Red Shoes motivation, let alone her secret experiments that would lead to downfall of humanity. Especially the UFH serving as the highest governmental body of the human nations should have especially diligent about it and should always had a very sharp eye on a non-secular organization like the V.T.C.

I played Red Ash before Chapter 23, so I figured Oswald was "The forgotten name" who kept preaching about the Goddess Squad and kept their memory alive. Of course the lore is a bit iffy since some old timers are supposedly still alive and seen walking around the Ark (according to Anis in her bond story), so it seems unlikely the CG could have suppressed the details. There would have to be people waiting for Dorothy's return.

I mean I didn't see Oswald as a bad guy just someone who did what he could for our heroes... his heroes. Especially at the end of Old Tales Part 2 I can feel it in the tone in his voice that feeling of "I wish I could've done more." And even after all that he still continued to spread the stories about Goddess's achievements so that the people would remember even when the Central Government was trying to wipe them from the records. In my mind if Goddess and Old Tales were the true Goddesses of Victory, Oswald was their prophet.

I think it was very much intentional that Oswald's face or design is not shown in Over Zone: he's literally the stand-in for the Wizard of Oz. He seems to be a cold commander as leads Dorothy and Goddess Squad on their mission. The story tricks so many people into thinking he's this scheming manipulator, heartless, using Nikkes and then throwing them away. But it's all a ruse - just like the Wizard of Oz, it's a part that he has to play. Regardless of whether or not you believe the theories that Oswald fed the Central Government misinformation to sway the decision towards "Close the Ark and lock them out," it is a fact that the Central Government chose to lock them out regardless. He must have been incredibly miserable having to be the one to disclose that to Dorothy. But if he had truly not cared, why on earth would he tell a super soldier his real name? Why would he not just end communications? He wanted to give her some degree of motivation to keep on living - we literally saw Dorothy on the verge of ending it all, the idea of getting revenge on Oswald's descendants kept her alive. Then there's his last bit of dialogue in Old Tales. He says "My hands are tied," but in Japanese what he says translates moreso to "I've done everything I can from my position." When he mentions a "clean slate," he actually means it. If you consider the intel from the modern era, the Goddesses staying on the surface saved the image of Nikkes after the corruption of Cinderella and the destruction she caused as Anachiro. It's very likely that if they hadn't "sacrificed" themselves (the lie that the CG tells the people), Nikkephobia would be significantly worse. I really love this character and I hope that at some point in the future we see his perspective at the end of Over Zone. Maybe even a saved and hidden journal entry somewhere.

There is 1 theory, that if we remember, in Chapter 23, when Dorothy been lead by Poli, Poli told her the story of 1 Man, who spread the Goddess Squad acomplishment. The theory is, that Man was actually Oswald; He fulfill his Promised, to let the whole Ark knows about Goddess Squad, eventhough all of the documents related to them been hide by CGA. That's why for a lot of people in Ark, Goddess Squad still becomes their Hero. Too bad that person already died a long time ago.

I personaly belive that Oswald as our only insight into the united forces of humanity/centeral goverment, represents the goverment itself near the end of the rapture war. There are so many mixed signals that oswald and the centeral goverment (at the time of the rapture war) were giving. At first we were given the results of their actions but never the reason behind them. At first its easy to label both as corrupt and evil when we dont know or bother to think as to why they would make these choices. In the case of Oswald we finaly have some understanding as to why he's doing everything he is, but for the centeral goverment we have nothing. Especialy once you start thinking about how the newly formed centeral goverement is for some reason locking out the Goddess squad when for the longest time their components were bickering on who owns the second gen models. To me Oswald and the centeral goverment are soldiers who have been worked to the bone and are now making the most difficult decisions for some reason out of their control. I really hope that shift up is able to explain the reasoning behind the centeral goverment with the power source plot line and everything else.

I used to view him just the same as the rest of the central government people but did have a slight doubt and that he may have been forced to follow orders he wished he could ignore and help the goddesses. Red Hood event made it more clear that he was more than just a regular human doing what's necessary. And now this current event and this video made me understand even further. I get that Dorothy feels so much hatred towards humanity and especially towards Osward for abandoning them just like how I used to dislike cinderella for blocking humanity's success to beat the raptures in the beginnings. Like it or not, sometimes there's always two sides of the coin. Salute to Oswald and his work.

im not fully caught up on the main story, and i know alot of people are subscribed to the "andersen is the goddess squad commander" theory, but right after i finished the old tales story, and oswald said his "i just want to see a happy ending" line, i did a main story cutscene where andersen said damn near the same exact line "i like my stories to have happy endings". and like right down to the facial structure its pretty much just as easy to see oswald as a younger andersen as it is to see the goddess commander as a younger andersen

During his discussion with Burningum and Doban about Dorothy after Doban leaves to investigate who she is Anderson asks Burningum if the goddess squad data has been erased. That flat out confirms the fact that he knows Dorothy is a goddess squad member when no one has seen her since Overzone and ALL of their information has been erased. Furthermore he also acts surprised at the mention of Snow white. People have a good reason to believe he's the legendary commander other than they share VAs because most of these people have actually paid attention to the story.

Oswald probably has some backup data about goddess squad since the only data he deleted was the Old Tales squad data and he probably only tell it to the people he trust. I guess we just have to wait and see for Shift Up to reveal everything.

I reserved my judgment for Oswald back when Overzone came out. Good thing too because I was right about there being more to him. Then I saw Red Ash and was like: 🫡 And while his return in Old Tales was a bit hostile he was pretty understandable and reasonable back then. Huh? What do I think about him? Well...he's definitely a multifaceted character. I don't hate him, I can't say I actually love him that much...but at least I respect him and understand him.

The end of the event makes me wonder if Oswald and Andersen are connected in some ways. They share many similarities including their knowledge of various classified subjects such as Vapaus and Goddess Squad, work for the government, and are generally mysterious individuals with equally ambiguous motivations. Yet they’ve proven helpful, as demonstrated by how Andersen “convinced” Burningum to call off the hunt on Marian and Oswald letting Cindy and co. go. On top of working to keep information on the Grimms models classified. A lot of coincidences between the two men and their actions.

Even his name being Andersen cleanly matches with the fairy tale motif of the original goddesses, as now the second gen since two of them were named after Hans Christian Andersen stories. They also have the same voice JP actor (our dear Sugibro) and as of the current versions we also know Andersen's being kept pretty artificially alive. As things currently are, the player commander is possibly a clone or a test tube grown offspring of him though- Andersen evades the question about being related when asked rather than denying it, and the player just suspiciously has no background, history, or long term memory like he just appeared in society one day. I would not be surprised if that's the direction they're writing toward. Oswald doesn't quite match the motif, nor tie to Dorothy in that way- the Wizard's real name was Oscar, OZ was his first two initials, Oscar Zoroaster.

@@gtf234 We have gotten some info on the commander via bonds and such, namely, the player commander grew up in an orphanage, but has no memories before that, I think it is infact safe to assume that the player commander is a test tube baby or clone. As for Andersens augments, isn't that just from a battlefield injury? I've done all the chapters, events and bonds thus far and there has been nothing in anyway implying that Andersen is the legendary commander himself, only that he and the player commander share his blood and that Andersen just has more knowledge about the whole war than most, probably due to his connection to said legendary commander and Enikk.

Oswald definitely had a Snape like presence, often he seemed to just be an adversary, but ultimately he was in your corner the whole time. I'm glad, nice to have more people that were on your side the whole time. The initial issue with Oswald was that we didn't know how high he was on totem pole. It was thought that he was among leadership of CG. That's why hate dissapeared almost entirely after Red Ash, that show him as much less important official.

Was a fan of Oswald as an NPC back in Red Ash. But now I was happy I put faith in him. He was the true hero alongside Anderson and our Commander later on. Love Ozwald, he's the goat, his story is one of unceasing devotion despite the pressures put on him and the pain he must go through, for the one who worshipped the goddess so strongly was given the toughest news to give. o7 I'm sorry for all those that hated on you when you did your best for the goddesses. Oswald did his job like a pro throughout the invasion, and Ark project. It was a really tragic end for him to spend his final days singing the Goddess' praises after having no choice but to cast them off. That little bit of lore from Invasion was enough for me to respect him, but Old Tales and Red Ash further solidified him as a true hero.

Nikke did such a good job of portraying a character like Oswald as this stoic soldier. What I find particularly interesting is his voice direction, especially in JP, his voice sounds monotone, his militaristic outfit contains no trace of his real personality (as far as I can tell) and in a lot of situations he's there to do his job which I honestly find brilliant. Not only that but in Overzone we don't even get to see him, his reveal as a person with real heart is gradual and comes from his words. We love Oswald in this house. 🫡
