Love seeing The Monmarte Cafe...one of THE places to dine and be seen in Hollywood. Last time I was there, the building was still there (just across from Grauman's Egyptian).

I love watching old footage like this as it eludes me over to a perception that's long since faded away, but never forgotten. That initial idealism is still very much alive and vibrant today. Least we EVER forget that! California should cite upon these foundations of history a little more often.

Other than the Carthay Circle theatre and the Brown Derby, most of the buildings shown are still standing today.

Disneyland's California Adventure is home to a smaller replica of Carthay Circle. Snow White premiered there in 1937.

@betty1114 That just goes with the territory. Singers before the advent of electronic recording in the mid '20s had to be able to outsing the instruments. Even after, that 'shouting" style was in vogue for several more years. It's very jarring to our ears today because we're so used to the more modulated style that came with using mics more, but it was common for the times.

Well the big stars of this era like Cary Grant, Errol Flynn etc were very often working class people. Acting even today (along with music and sport) is one of the professions where the working classes can rise to the top. In those days it was one of the only professions that working men and women could take on and succeed. But as I suggested in my last comment he didn't mean class as in social class he was clearly referring to bearing, dress and character.

All I'm saying is be careful of using the word "class." ..makes it sound like a snob. In fact, there were a lot of snobs then. So it raises questions: Is class separation necessary for people to tighten their dress/manners? Do people have to be forced into behaving? Can we have liberal things like racial equality and maintain quality music/manners? Did the rock culture cause caving (pun intended) socially & musically?

,,,and, just exactly what is "poise & decency"? For example: Is it more decent to be well dressed while running a corrupted business, or is it more decent to be bare naked & honest while feeding impoverished people? For that matter, I should take back my complaint about the music. It's all apples & oranges. All music/behavior/dress is good & people should just stop complaining.
