I used to work media at Sundance and Slamdance, and Slandance always felt like the real film festival at the time. Sundance was the glamor and usually had a Hollywood name attached to it, but Slamdance felt like the festival for true filmmakers. The movies were raw and didn't have the press behind them like Sundance, but damn they were fun movies. I enjoyed both festivals, but Slamdance will always hold a special place in my heart.

I loved watching this film at Raindance, and getting to meet you and Kimmy! Aside from enjoying the film itself, it was a real watershed moment for me seeing and feeling the value of being in a community like AOD. Also, totally understand the name change for the film, even though I liked the original title. Reminds me of a core line from Save the Cat by Blake Synder.

I feel it started with Disney+ when they both created and distributed their content which used to be an antitrust law violation. The same law that prevented movie studios from owning movies theaters because then they would have a monopoly. But with streaming they seem to just do whatever and now everyone is doing it. But that pretty much makes finding content not created by these few companies HBO,Netflix, Disney+, Hulu,paramount difficult. Because when you go to their platforms obviously they’ll be pushing their original stuff that they spent millions on and really want to offset cost on to the recommendation section over some third party content they purchased.

Thanks Mark. You are great and I follow you from East Africa, Somalia. I learned a lot and I had a confusion on distribution. I think Web 3 will make things more democratic and more available for the audience which will be more beneficial for both the creators and the audience.

Once upon a time I used to watch tones of movies, western movies. Lots of them. Goto blockbuster, spend my paper rounds money to rent the latest and greatest titles etc.. But more recently I have stopped going to the cinema, stopped buying videos, DVD's and Blu-Rays etc. Nowadays I don't even buy CD's or even digital media.. Sold all my pre-record originals which cluttered my living space in exchange for KZbin and live stream content. Thank you Mark for all the videos.

Don’t know if this will get through to you, Mark, but I am so happy that you share all this knowledge with us. If one goes through your videos, make notes and study the information provided, one truly has everything they need to start putting in work, take actionable steps and learning the craft. I dont want to ask anything from you, as you have provided so much already. But it is no harm in trying. Would you be able to make a video speaking about how you make deals with your clients, the contract, crucial things to think about, the rights, posting the work on your KZbin channel, what would be considered marketing for your client and not? Would be tremendously helpful with a video about the legal side of it all, and how you approch that side of your work. Thank you so much, Mark. Cant wait for the next 🎬

What a great video. Looking forward to seeing ASD. I have a close family link to autism so seeing it covered properly is always great to see. You deserve every success! With your old documentary’s, have you uploaded them anywhere for people to see them? It would be interesting to see your work from then. This was a really great video, really great points again! Like with music, there’s too much coming out and no kind of filters in place, the general quality seems to drop. When it was harder to release music, there was that natural filter. So there seemed to be a lot more that was higher quality. Really inspiring video again Mark.

The last two years I have been reading a lot about the "target audience" / "build your audience" / Use multiple different media, like a novel, music, document the creation process - - to find your target audience. As a producer with a space opera action sci-fi that I put on the shelf back in 2002... It makes me wonder, I really need to work on finding the right audience.

I was craving mashed potatoes so I ran to KFC and came back home to eat them. I turned on the television. I see that you've posted a new video. I get sucked into it because it's excellent in the next thing I know, is that I wanted more mashed potatoes than the tiny side dish that they offered me. So I went back into the kitchen and made a giant bowl of mashed potatoes. As I finish it, completely inspired by this particular video and the conversation that you had had, prove to me that we're living in a simulation with that purely anecdotal footnote of your death row meal. So. Weird.

Every film has an audience! It’s your job to find them
@HORNGEN4
@HORNGEN4 3 ай бұрын
I think it's important to emphasize that the audience doesn't come first, at least in forms of true expression. Yes, there is some balance between true expression and marketability in terms of making a living, but during conception and creation that balance should NEVER lean toward marketability (ie identifying an audience). The focus on marketability is why we have endless heaps of trash films, music and other "content" to sort through. If a film has solid fundamentals and a heart + soul, a targeted marketing angle can be developed with relatively little effort.
@markbone
@markbone 3 ай бұрын
You make some very valid points here. I think a potential audience can and should be determined in pre production but I think it’s fostered easier when the project has something to show. And good storytelling is the best thing to show a potential audience

Great video. Filmmaker's have to think beyond making the film but they need to consider how the film will be marketed/sold. Is independent distribution (renting, paid screenings, etc.) the most lucrative path to making a living as a documentary filmmaker today? It seems for new filmmakers that this is the best advice for those who are trying to break into the industry, make enough money to merely just build a life, and then have enough to make more films. Chasing the big distributors just seems like a surefire way to ultimately become irrelevant.
@thefilmtRANscend
@thefilmtRANscend 3 ай бұрын
not necessarily. i’ve sold films to netflix for six figures. i’ve been commissioned hundreds of thousands to create films for broadcasters. but each film will have its own life. independent distribution is right for some films, licensing is right for others, etc…

I like the "look" in this talking head spot better than anything yet Mark. Always very good but this had a little sumthin sumthin. Technically this is what KZbin does all days every day. Target Audience. I rarely see anything about cats. I'm not a cat fan. Nothing against Cats in general but YT knows I won't watch... Captive audience is an ad/video in a bathroom stall.
