Heavy creation work on a heavy juniper! I collected this Hollywood Juniper on a dig about two years ago, and gave it a year to get settled into a training pot. It was growing pretty well, and it's the right time of year, so I decided to shape it as a classical formal upright bonsai, since this is why I collected it in the first place. Unfortunately this juniper was so large and heavy that my camera operator had to participate in the shaping and potting, which left us with not a lot of video footage. I have tried to fill in with still shots taken with my cell phone. Don't worry. Later this season or early next season, this tree will need to have the primary branches rewired as well as detail wiring on the secondary ramification, so we'll take a longer and better look at it then. We had to take off more than half the roots to get it into that bonsai pot, but we followed the same techniques as all my other repottings, so check out my other videos if you want to see how this is done.

That's a fine looking tree. Well on its way to becoming a masterpiece. I collected a dwarf oak from my sisters yard Saturday. It was in sandy soil so I had to bare root it. Got my fingers crossed, will make a fine sumo if it pulls through. Thanks for the video.

Good morning Charles, I have been watching your videos now for about a year. I appreciate the time you take to explain what you do, but the variety of trees that you use. Here in Illinois, we also use Dawn Redwood and bald cypress. I would be interested to see you work with those trees if they're available. Thank you, Jack Earley

I have a Dawn Redwood that is about the same size as that Hollywood Juniper. It was in a tub, on a paving stone, and it put roots through the drain holes, over the stone and into the ground. And it cracked the tub open. One of this spring's projects is to get it out of the tub, cut it down, and get it in a training pot.

Hellooo Chasnsx I enjoy all of your videos and also thank you for replying to my questions . I got a juniper 10 footer in my back yard and thinking of doing the same thing as yours but keeping in mine that will be cut in half or even a little more, should I dig it out first like you did and have it on a training pot for 2 yrs or can I prune and wire before digging it out ...Thanks again for all your great vids

Can you Bonsai or Niwaki(Japanese styled garden tree) a ‘Green Sea’ Juniper?? I have two +25 year old Sea Green junipers in my backyard (I just branch selected, pruned, styled and started training them only this past summer). I also planted about 25 cuttings from it. Are these even Bonsai’able? I’ve noticed right away when I started working on it (and have also read on the internet), they are not really ideal for bonsai because - their trunks/branches are too super straight and long, leggy and also the foliage is too pointy and feather shaped. Your opinion please? Any help greatly appreciated!

were almost into spring here in South Dakota, and I was wondering, when would be a good time to start digging up pine trees from the grounds, I'm out here in the North East corner

That was worthless. I learned nothing from the still shots and then jumping to almost a finished tree.
