Dean would top the charts a few months later with "Everybody Loves Somebody." Ironically, he knocked the Beatles out of the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100.

Jerry must have been upset knowing Dean was appearing on the same theatre that Lewis built with his own money.

Funny, I saw a little price of film where Dean was thanking Jerry for building a theater for him. I often wonder where that piece came from. Now I know.

Jerry Lewis spent a fortune of his own money building the palace into a state of-the-art television theater for his Saturday night TV "variety" program. He got the gig because of high ratings as guest host of the "Tonight Show", but his own show was a textbook disaster (he'd have a modicum of success on NBC for two seasons in the late sixties). This is was a smack down of Jerry which turned into nearly 20 years of success with "The Dean Martin Show" on NBC from 1966 to 1974 and with his celebrity roasts, the last of which aired in 1984. If you want to see the palace just prior to the ABC show, look on KZbin for Jerry's program from November of '63 when he treats Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali) very badly, tries to sing and gets all emotional when he talks of JFK's murder. It is typical Jerry - egotistical, full of fake emotion, very unfunny, full of long, boring silences when he doesn't know what to do, etc. Jerry was everything that Dean was not... really a train wreck. Martin was smooth, multi-talented and made it look effortless (which is wasn't.) kzbin.info/www/bejne/m3TQfI2PrtSbmNk

I am wondering if the executives at NBC saw how well Dean hosted The Hollywood Palace and decided to offer him his own show on their network.

Dean hosted the "PALACE" several times during 1964. That led to NBC's interest in offering him his own weekly series for 1965.

+Barry I. Grauman I attended a taping of the Dean Martin Show in 1966. I was just a teen at the time and my recollection is spotty. But I do remember 3 things. Dean did something with a cue stick and touched his chin with the tip leaving a blue chalk mark that wasn't fixed until commercial time. The set looked to be about half the size it appeared on TV. Then there was a female guest singer whose voice I enjoying until my parents started humming about her not wearing a bra. I didn't hear another note.

This was still the majority, mainstream of entertainment, and the quality shows. Rock and roll destroyed entertainment's quality for good.
@brucec6095

+zzindorf I think that it is unfair to blame rock and roll. It's the audience. Without public support R&R would have met with a swift death. You might take note that swing music was received with equal disdain by the older generation who missed the string section they were used to. And I'm sure swing bands were likewise unhappy with the popular jazz that altered their careers. Many rock artists have now moved over to country music and created the country rock that's now popular after rap and hip hop took over the popular music scene. Life moves on and change is the only thing you can count on. But society drives the change not entertainers.

@@brucec6095, yes, marketing never comes into play.. Also, if change is a constant then its always the same constant. Only when it doesn't reach the constant do you get change. And, changing for the sake of just changing with no beneficial result, is the same as staying the same with no beneficial result.. =Worthless...
