This actually SURVIVED NBC's practice of "Wiping"....which was responsible for the senseless destruction of many of the network's game show episodes, of the 60s and 70s!

It's a shame that the "wiped" episodes couldn't have been condensed onto one tape so that they could have them all together.

According to Peter Marshall's book there was a second pilot with Sandy Barron as host. It is unknown if that pilot exists. Sandy was turned down because his accent was too "East Coast"

@KMBCGeno Yeah, after introducing the original "Squares" to a friend too young to remember the original version (he was born in 1981, the year the original ended) with episodes taped off of GSN, I showed him the pilot (after acquiring it in a trade), and one of his first comments was "I like Peter Marshall better".

Vera Miles had a very early game show appearance as a contestant on You Bet Your Life before she became a movie star. I've heard a recording of the radio broadcast of the show, but haven't seen the TV version. It was the only You Bet Your Life I've ever heard where all of the contestants missed all their questions, and Vera Miles & her partner ended up in the big jackpot question with something like 2 dollars (the other two couples went broke). They didn't answer the big jackpot question either.

Bert Parks is a darn good host. He keeps the show somewhat exciting and he does seem to enjoy himself and the people involved, but I'm going to have to agree with most people's comments in that he puts too much drama in his conducting the game. It's a serious show all right, but it doesn't need to be that serious. That's why all the celebrities have zingers (one-liners), but nonetheless, I love this pilot and I'd wished the producers have asked Bert Parks to tone it down a little.

Ironically, the last run of "(The) Hollywood Squares" with Tom Bergeron returned to CBS Television City for the first time since this pilot. in Studio 33 (later Carol Burnett Studio, now Bob Barker Studio). The stage is nowhere as spacious at the NBC stage, and the squares were much smaller and cramped compared to the NBC and syndicated Century Towers/Orion versions.

Several celebrity panelists (Wally Cox, Abby Dalton, Rose Marie, and Cliff "Charlie Weaver" Arquette) in this pilot would go on to become regular or semi-regular panelists when "Hollywood Squares" finally became a series in 1966.

I counted 3 "tic tac toe" errors in this 18 minute clip... THREE! If you have an X or an O on the board, you might want to choose a square that gives a possibility of getting three in a row -- how hard is this concept? It always drove me crazy when contestants on this show couldn't grasp this... and they even did it in the pilot... and BOTH contestants made "tic tac toe" errors!
@christopherdunne7848
@christopherdunne7848 7 жыл бұрын
Funny you mention. In the Marshall version, almost without fail, the first celeb picked would be in a corner, whereas it would seem the center square would be be reasonable choice. The other versions seemed to start out correctly for the most part. Hard to explain here!
@hmmmmmmmmm2
@hmmmmmmmmm2 7 жыл бұрын
The only thing I can think of is "regular people" being (A) dazzled and confused by all the lights and the studio audience and the cameras, and (B) anxious to ACTUALLY SPEAK TO their favorite "star." I'm afraid that I am too pragmatic to have been selected to be a contestant on this, or probably a lot of other television game shows.

Because the only surviving Marshall Squares episodes are night-time, in those episodes the Secret Square game was played first (and second and third as well). I'm guessing the contestants would think the center square would be unlikely to carry the Secret Square (and to a degree I think that's true) so they usually searched to the corners because it's the next-best choice strategy-wise for the game and they really did put the Secret Square in one of those squares a lot.
@hmmmmmmmmm2
@hmmmmmmmmm2 7 жыл бұрын
I DO understand that "Secret Square" aspect of it... but it really does NOT explain many, many of the obvious "Tic Tac Toe" errors, since so many of them happened even AFTER the "secret square" part -- even as evidenced right here in this episode... but this one was NOT unique.

I see why Bert Parks didn't get the gig. Gets bogged down in details and makes the whole thing dreadful. Peter Marshall had the perfect balance of glibness, quickness, and just enough detail and accuracy to keep the game moving along.
