*This was done live in one take. The beat is coming from The Beastie Boys and Mix Master Mike only. No samples, no pre-recorded studio beats, no automation... just 4 guys with 100%, pure, raw, talent.*

Then they made Paul's Boutique to make up for the lack of samples. 😄 Seriously though, the list of musicians who love Paul's Boutique is so large and diverse! When you release a hip hop album that both Miles Davis and Henry Rollins among others declare to be one of their favorite albums, you've got a winner on your hands.

Mix Master Mike didn’t join the Beastie Boys until 1998 on their “Hello Nasty” album, which is where this song comes from. That’s why you didn’t hear about him through most of their career. Once he joined the band he changed their dynamic and they definitely gave him lots of props. Mix Master Mike was a member of the DJ collective called the Invisibl Skratch Piklz, founded with DJ Qbert. They revolutionized the DJ scratching game in the 90s. If you like what MMM did here definitely check out DJ Qbert or the Skratch Piklz.

Mixmaster Mike's big innovation to their sound was hooking his turntables to a wah-wah pedal. He called it the "tweak scratch" technique. This was from the first album they did together, Hello Nasty, the same one that features Intergalactic.

The point they were trying to make is that the MC's cant do anything until the DJ shows up. Mix Master Mike won the world DJ contest so many times that they asked him not to come back, to give somebody else a chance. He was also an unlockable character in SSX Tricky. The thing about the Beastie Boys is they got started so early in rap history, that they kind of got "grandfathered in." When they started, rap was just a New York thing. It wasn't a "black" thing yet. So these white boys did their thing, and if anybody had a problem with that later on, they'd just get pointed to history and have to shut up and sit back down. The Beasties were Rick Rubin's first ever signed group. They basically paid for Def Jam to get off the ground. They also handed LL Cool J's mixtape to Rick Rubin and told him it was worth a listen. These white guys are basically right at ground zero of the start of all old-school hip-hop as we know it. I see people these days arguing about where Eminem stands in hip hop because of his whiteness, but I've *never* seen anybody dare to have that discussion about the Beastie Boys. They may not be in your personal top five, but nobody ever challenges their place in hip hop history.

I'm predominantly a metal guy and I've been to a ton of metal and hard rock concerts (and others)... BUT ... Saw the Beastie Boys once, and honestly, it's still in my top 5 favourite concerts of all-time. I'm not the dancing type, and they had me dancing (poorly) in the aisle. I'd ask y'all to react to So What'cha Want, but I'm sure you must've heard that song a billion times already. It's, bar none, my favourite rap song of all time. I especially love the Muppet parody video of that song. (with the Swedish Chef, Animal, and Beaker) By the way, I saw Metallica with Avenged Sevenfold, and Gojira a few years back. They had Mixmaster Mike jamming between bands all evening. It was awesome!! Just shows you how open-minded Lars and company are as music fans.

Beastie boys was my first taste of rap. They are engraved as legends and nothing anyone says will ever change that. There was a point I couldn't stand rap because it was all about doing drugs, drinking, smacking ladies upside the head, spending money, shooting up rivals and so on. There was probably about 15 years I avoided rap/hip hop.

Dude, you guys should check out the Beastie Boys ft Nas “Too Many Rappers and not Enough Mcs” Classic. Awesome accomplishment to be the VERY FIRST WHITE BOYS EVER to rap, rubbing elbows with Run DMC, Rick Rubin, Russel Simmons. The 80’s, the 90’s, 2000’s. Then integrated their punk rock, psychedelic roots, and their other talents of playing instruments and just becoming a totally unique style. The albums became like mixed tapes of great original and creative music The rhymes weren’t heavy bars, but the beats were crazy and unpredictable. That’s why people started calling them the BeaTsie Boys. Then they get inducted into the Rock n Roll hall of fame by LL Cool J and Chuck D. Wish MCA could’ve been there. Beasties and Everlast were really the only white people in rap that got respect for a while. 3rd Bass got a little, but where are they. Everlast still making music(and he still does Hip Hop) He picked up an instrument just like the Beasties. Doesn’t mean he’s a “quitter”. Btw I don’t know too many people Eminem has made peace with, shouts out Everlast in a song, gives props to House of Pain during his induction speech, and allows him to come on Sway and get interviewed. People don’t even realize he’s been doing Hip Hop since the 80s and still tours the world. You might like his song Dream State, or the rap group hes in Warporne Industries. Fuckn bangin. Divine Styler is the dj.

A little history : The one on the right Adam Yauch (with the raspy voice) was a co-founding member passed away from cancer. (RIP) These guys were discovered by Rick Rubin and they signed with DefJam Records with Russel Simmons they toured with RUN DMC way back in the day they were the opening act for them their biggest influence is RUN DMC. Beastie Boys have enough material for you to deep dive into there’s an endless rabbit hole of their music. These guys moved an entire generation of people before Eminem, Machine Gun Kelly, or NF came into the scene they were the first white guys that got respect from the Hip Hop community. They were the ones that paved the way for white rappers. And the DJ Mix Master Mike was one thee best to pioneer the art of turntablism. It’s one record on his table and this was performed live during the MTV Music Awards.

Originally it was jut the four elements. Eventually they added production as a fifth and after that it just kept growing. Gangsta rap started in Philly with Schoolly D and then Ice-T refined it and the west coast became the place where it evolved and blew up. This was in the late-80s before Wu-Tang was even formed. RZA was still Prince Rakeem and GZA was still The Genius. Also, the Beastie Boys have had a few DJs, starting with Rick Rubin (aka DJ Double R) in the very early days, DJ Hurricane up to Ill Communication, and then Mix Master Mike. I've heard Hurricane co-wrote "Three MCs and One DJ". But if you like Mixmaster Mike and DJ music, you should check out his old group Invisibl Skratch Piklz, which were asked by DMC (Disco Mix Club) to stop competing in their DJ battles because they intimidated other DJs who didn't want to compete against them. Check out some of their live routines, especially their battle with X-Men.

Mike is a genius! He really started working with them in the late 90’s when they went back to their “old school” style on the Hello Nasty album. The 2 albums that came before have a completely different musical style- mainly punk, rock and jazz fused with hip hop. Such an eclectic band of geniuses- they always worked with the most talented session players and producers in the industry. Each album is a benchmark in whichever style they choose to portray. If you listen to the studio version of this song, the idea came from Mike himself- he has his turntable through a wah wah pedal and called MCA to give him a demo, but instead just left a voicemail. It’s the start of the track. Awesome. And great memories of seeing them all perform this live when I was 19. Thanks guys!

One of my favorite Mix Master Mike solo tracks is called "Rebel Enforcer". It's not fancy scratching, but a killer beat.

Is your shirt a reference to the movie They Live with Roddy Piper? Since you are a huge wresting fan, I'm guessing yes. I'm just surprised because it seems like nobody else on earth remembers that movie. It was epic. Cheesy, but epic. Thanks guys. I love what you do. Stay awesome!
