The word “Yankee” has a fascinating and convoluted history, but its usage by southerners to describe people from the northwest was definitely derogatory, and dates from the civil war so… kinda got a racist origin story there too. Lol. Also, New York invented rap. I know people have their own regional and stylistic preferences, but loving hip hop and dissing New York is like loving rock and dissing the blues. People do it, but to me it just marks them as tourists. 😉 Love y’all.

Yankee comes from the original Dutch NY colonists referring to the new English as “John Cheese” because they loved cheese so much. John is “Yan” in Dutch. So it turned into Yan Cheese then into Yankees.

I just about shit myself when this song/album came out. Tribe and Beasties are by far my favourite groups of all genres, not just hip hop. They promoted postivity (Beasties had to mature a bit to get there, but they did), they let their DJ's shine which is something that hip hop lost over the years. They lasted longer than most hip hop groups do, Hell, the only thing that stopped the Beastie Boys was the death of MCA, and I like to think that if Phife hadn't passed Tribe would have been able to hold things together to keep making great relevant music. To me, the Beasties biggest downfall was not being relatable to mainstream hip hop fans. They generally never rapped about street life, and all the things that have moved to the forefront of what is now popular in hip hop. And I'm OK with that. The Beastie Boys will forever be that much loved band by those with an open mind, and respected by those who really know music.

Did this song always include Q-Tip? I seem to recall a "Get it together" very different from this being played on the radio. Not this beat and not with Q-Tip. This version was on the single but as one of 3-4 remixes. I might be misremembering things though. I was very young when this came out.

@@SuperDaveSo Agreed. If it isn't this version it wont be as good. Idc who did the mix. I'm probably misremembering things. My recollection is that it first came out with a more "traditional" Beastie Boys sound than this. Closer to their 80's punk/rap/transitional stuff. I'm probably just mixing things up. My first experience with this song is from the single which had a couple of terrible mixes on it.

This is arguably their most "hip hop" song and it's a heater. There's so much slander on the beastie boys now that hip hop has come so far but without these guys so many other groups and bands would not have started. Also I think segregating rap music by territory is wack but that's a whole other can of beans. You either like it or you don't.

“So What’Cha Want” is the best Beastie Boys song to me. It has the classic Mike D phrase “Like a long, leaner, Vincent the Cleaner, I’m the illest motherf***er from here to Gardena”. And “Intergalactic” has the MCA phrase “If you try to knock me, you’ll get mocked, I’ll stir fry you in my wok.” They put you on notice and make you laugh. ❤️

As much as I enjoy that So What'cha Want, I don't think it's a good showcase of their talents. There's virtually no variation to the music. They don't really showcase their DJ like they do in other songs, and they don't pass the mic mid-verse, and mid-sentence like they do in other songs.
@SuperDaveSo
@SuperDaveSo 2 жыл бұрын
@@DocRobert Pass The Mic might just be my favourite song from them. The beat is hard, it mixes in some rock with the guitar... it has a couple change ups in beat. In the last verse they go old school style with their rapping. I think the only song that comes close to it for me is Shake Your Rump.

Not sure if this was mentioned already, but I am about 98% sure that I remember reading that all of Q-Tip's parts were freestyled. They were messing around in the studio, the beat for this song was played, Q-Tip started playing around and throwing stuff out and they made a song around it. You can kind of tell in several places because the lyrics are pretty much nonsense and there's no real premise to the song, but it's still pretty effing incredible if you ask me.

I mean they started rapping in 1983 with the beginning of Def Jam, and still to this day I don’t think there has been able to top their original samples or beats. That’s why people started calling them the Beat-sie boys. Eminems album cover for kamakazzi is the beasties 1st album cover. When they picked their instruments back up, they still kept it hip hop. They were a punk band when they were 13-15 years old. That is where John Berry was part of the band. Adam Horowitz (AdRock) started in his place. They discovered LL Cool J, and toured with Run DMC, Public Enemy, and helped Rick Rubin get Def Jam records started with Russel Simmons. They had the 1st rap album that went to #1 on the charts and took rap from the East boroughs of New York and into Manhattan and the entire shocked white America. Rap was floundering in popularity until the Beasties.

I understand having a bias against certain artists. I know I still have it at times but really it’s more about my mood, I think. If you give things and people like Yankees, Damn Yankees, and whatever you’d call me (I say mutt) a chance, ya never know, especially when in the right mood. 😂

I was able to see The Beastie Boys & A Tribe Called Quest in concert & man that was a great concert & they had a rotating stage, which would have made me dizzy as hell.
