I would absolutely say that Amy was a jazz singer, one of the very best. She was heavily influenced and inspired by Miss Etta James and Miss Ella Fitzgerald. A stunning talent and yes she did write her lyrics.

Agreed. There's some other genre influences in there too as well. But as a fan of Ella Fitzgerald and Etta James, I absolutely align with your comment. Such a tragedy, can only imagine the beauty she could have continued to bestow on the music industry.

Amy got her start in jazz, a brilliant vocalist and a great feel for blues. I hope you react to more from her. In this 'funeral' procession, she was burying her heart, forever lost to the man who broke it. The song was released in 2006, Amy passed in 2011.

A remarkable talent gone way too soon. "Valerie", "You Know I'm No Good" - magical and tragic. There's an excellent movie of her life, simply called "Amy" which is both uplifting and heartbreaking. Amy was born not far from me (though I'd long left before she arrived on the scene) - from one Barnet kid to another, RIP, beautiful woman.

Yet another star that burnt twice as bright for half as long. This track bears a lot of similar elements in terms of its composition to "Remember (Walking In the Sand)" by the Shangri-Las. Highly recommend that if you like the 60s girl group sound but with that same bluesy, jazzy, sadgirl edge.

The song was about her relapse after a bad break up . Black is a term for herion which she has struggled with until her death. And it even mentions her other struggles with Crack cocaine when she said "life is like a pipe and I'm a tiny penny rolling up the the walls inside" the song is very sad because this breakup ultimately led to her death she is truly missed. Noone else will ever compare.

The thing with British artists is that they don’t pay much attention to trying to fit their music into defined genres. Often it’s a blend and a mash of several sounds. That’s why they don’t always make it through to the US market - the music industry demands to know what genre it fits in and if it didn’t, it gets ignored.

She wrote her own lyrics. Going back to black is both going back to depression but also using & drinking. She's speaking of her relationship with Blake Fielder Civil & their tortuous relationship that was true, deep love ...soul mates, but it wasn't a healthy relationship. He would go back to his ex, who knew about Amy, then return. I'd guess it was a constant cycle of highs and lows. It's just soooo heartbreaking to imagine the deep emotional pain she endured & for so many years. They couldn't be with each other but also couldn't be without each other. Many surmise that her untimely death could have easily been from her broken heart. She quit drugs in her later years but still struggled with drinking. The day she passed away, she was alone and in her room it's reported, there were 3 empty vodka bottles. Her tiny body had just given out and couldn't take any more. I didn't listen to her or know much about her until just a few years ago. Now...I'm obsessed with her life & music and cannot stop listening to her incredible voice.

In 2012, Winehouse was among the British cultural icons selected by artist Sir Peter Blake to appear in a new version of his most famous artwork - the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album cover - to celebrate the British cultural figures of his life that he most admires. On 14 September 2014 (which would have been Winehouse's 31st birthday), a statue was unveiled of her, which was created by sculptor Scott Eaton, at Stables Market in Camden Town, north London.
