Day Of The Dead Skeleton 💀 Halloween Props for The Winchester Mystery House

Join us a we make some Day Of The Dead skeleton Halloween props and decorations as well as large Halloween pumpkins for The Winchester Mystery House All Hallows' Eve Halloween event. Afterwards we explore the grounds of the Winchester House during one of the set up days. These large Dia De Los Muertos skeleton puppets are sculpted and carved from white foam and then hard coated with polyester resin and fiberglass. They are then hand painted to look similar to the authentic Mexican Paper Mache skeleton puppets. We pulled many ideas and inspirations from parades, sugar skulls, skeleton decorations, Disneyland, and images we found online. We also fabricated a few of our giant fiberglass pumpkins for their kids pumpkin patch. This year the Winchester Mystery House has a huge projection mapping on the outside of the house, a night time walkthrough tour, a kids pumpkin patch, giant sunflowers and décor made from smaller funkin pumpkin decorations. They have a big area decorated for Day Of The Dead with an alter and several colorful decorations. We also made large Jack O Lanterns for their entrance ticket booth.

Great video ! A few years ago the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston had a display of Frida Kahlo display that I was able to visit. They had a large day of the dead figure that Frida had a local craft person make. It was huge ! About 10 feet tall ! I think yours turned our amazing ! Thanks for sharing !

@@HollywoodHaunter Sadly, at this time, I am not doing a display. Hopefully next year will be a better opportunity to have one. I am going to miss it tremendously, but working 18 yrs in (a Mad) Virology lab has taught me to avoid the witches and warlocks who are shedding poisons and spells after taking a couple of shots of brew right out of the devil's caldrons. Sad but true. Sorry for talking so Crypt-ically. I'm just waiting on the Holy Ghost to make his move. I believe he will be shaking things up soon.

The maracas should've been pumpkins! The texture looks like guords and bones and pumpkins. They aren't smooth. Beautiful job!

Great job with the skeletons!! I want to make reaper statues like that for the entrance to my cemetery. Everyone does monster mud, but I want to try your method with carved styrofoam and fiberglass. Can you detail the process? What is the gel coat you mention?

The gel coat gives the outside the smooth surface over the fiberglass and resin like on a boat. It will help make you project last for years but its definitely more work and cost more than monster mud. There are great fiberglass tutorials that show the steps and details. A lot of times they show on a piece of wood or something but it was still helpful when we were getting started.

Great project! They are beautiful! I’m so I love with all Die de los Muertos props and decorations. I draw my own designs on blank skulls. I’m extremely novice when it comes to creating my own decorations, but I love learning how. I would really like to start creating pieces with styrofoam. Can you tell me where you get the large pieces of foam? I try to do as much as I can myself since store bought are so expensive. I really appreciate how you share what materials and techniques you use! Thanks for sharing 💜

We get foam from several local stores or free off craigslist. Are you local in the la county area? if not tractor supply stores are a great place to find free foam.

Forgot to ask on first watching, remembered on 2nd watch ! What did you use for the shoulder "joints" BEFORE you used Great Stuff to seal them in place. It almost looked like black rope ?! What was it attached to ?!

I used a couple pcs of rebar like the neck joint to support the weight then the great stuff to glue in place
