@Shifterred If I remember well, the case happened years before Holmes met Watson, and the Canon story runs as H tells W how it all happened and it doesn't mention any drugs. Here it is adapted to involve both H and W, and begins with, as you say, a "stagnant" moment. Holmes quite involuntarily accepts Reginald Musgrave's repeated invitations to stay at his place, since he was bored to death. The case at Musgrave Hall appeared only after this scene, so that explains Holmes' cocaine this evening.

While Holmes' laughter is funny, his drug use, and his reasons for it, aren't. He uses drugs in the times where he can't find enough mental stimulation in normal life - such as when he hasn't had a case for a long time. It's bizarre how, in knowing that context, his laughter seems both funny and sad at the same time.
@Danko_Sekulic4 жыл бұрын
A lot of people are like that, but it is rarely discussed in the media because the hypocritical puritans would wag their useless fingers and call people like that selfish, lazy and God knows what else . Focusing on the "cure for emotional pain" narrative supposedly makes users more "sympathetic", but it neglects a large portion of both recreational users and addocts, who simply need it to relieve boredom. Also, a lot of people who need constant stimulation don't slip into that same downward spiral, because they can find it in other areas (chess, sports, music), whereas Holmes could only find it - at least to a degree that could stave off his cocaine cravings- in interesting cases alone.

I think I can understand and perhaps relate to Holmes to a certain extent. I can relate to the boredom he experiences and canonically as he doesn't seem to take any interest in romance and sexual sort of things he really can't relate to other people's excitement about those certain things and of course since he's a genius the world is definitely a lot more duller to a sharp mind like his and thus accumulating to his terrible boredom. And the only thing that helps him escape this is the intriguing cases he gets or his drug abuse(which is really a terrible thing and one mustn't really resort to such circumstances whatsoever) or his violin but I really think a person like him will get tired after playing the instrument after quite sometime as it isn't that much unpredictable like his other interests. So, it's really terribly sad to see him go through this and I really hope he'd find other certain things that'll take him out of his bored phases ( but of course he's a fictional character but stil...).
