It is certainly one of the gifts of Brett's acting that we are given the glorious, silken cascade if his beautiful speaking voice. With thanks to his heritage and more than a little to Eton, Brett doesn't deny us any of the verbal skills so perfectly suited to Holmes. This charming video is a playful nod to a dazzling actor having the time of his life.

It gave him a bit of concern early in his career, when roles were going to "tough boys" with regional accents - and it did consign him to a lot of period pieces. I for one, however, am glad it did because he suited those roles so well. From Max DeWinter to the Good Soldier to Affairs of the Heart, to his comic turns in An Ideal Husband, the Rivals, and On Approval - he could transport you back in time. It's probably appropriate to point out, too, that Brett's perfect diction didn't come naturally. He had to have his tongue tie clipped (a minor procedure but SO important) at 17 and then take speech therapy to learn to say his "r' and "s" sounds. Before that he couldn't even pronounce his own name, and so was the object of much teasing at school. I'm so glad that Granada set Holmes in the late 19th, early 20th Century and didn't update it. It allows us to see Brett use his brilliant acting skills - and it let him interact more with the horses he loved so much.

Am I the only one who's heart broke apart when watching The Devils Foot and Holmes just straight up screamed 'John' into Watsons face? Nevertheless, an awesome and adorable video :`D

Just imagine if one time, instead of "my friend and colleague, dr. Watson" Holmes completly casually says "my lover and colleague"

@MrMaluraoj2 жыл бұрын
They are not lovers, they are the best of friends.
@aw88852 жыл бұрын
@@MrMaluraoj it’s all up to interpretation! some people like them as lovers, others as besties, and others as somewhere in between. I personally see them as queerplatonic partners in most adaptations (particular Granada) but however people wanna interpret is valid!! just don’t put down others’ interpretations because yours are different
@ebrandt96982 жыл бұрын
@@aw8885 But that interpretation is just plain incorrect. Watson is 100% heterosexual, and Holmes is completely Asexual. "All emotions, that one in particular (love), were abhorrent to his cold, precise but admirably balanced mind"
@aw88852 жыл бұрын
@@ebrandt9698 if we’re using quotes, perhaps you should reread The Three Garridebs: “It was worth a wound-it was worth many wounds- to know the depth of loyalty and love which lay behind that cold mask. The clear, hard eyes were dimmed for a moment, and the firm lips were shaking. For the one and only time I caught a glimpse of a great heart as well as of a great brain.” Like I said before, everything is up to interpretation. Saying one interpretation is absolute doesn’t do anybody any good. If you want to interpret Holmes as aroace and Watson as straight, go for it. I love aroace Holmes, too. But putting down other people’s interpretations is pointless. Multiple readings of a text can coexist. (also, people can be asexual without being aromantic. I’m assuming you meant aroace in your reply, but for future reference :) )
