The date marked on the box was not the "expiry date", but "best before" date. In Japan, perishable products like food are marked with two dates: "expiry date" which means it is no longer safe to eat, and an earlier "best before" date which means that, after that date the eating experience is not as good as intended but still perfectly safe. The game's scenario is that both products are within the "best before" date but one of them a day earlier, and it is meant to be eaten immediately. The girls, all being Japanese, are well aware of it, with Rushia being the exception, all picked the one on special without hesitation.

@@zangvang To be completely fair, the error range goes both ways. Like if a product says it'll expire on date X, it could expire days later. Or days earlier. Especially for perishable items. However, expiration dates are mostly BS for other food stuff, so good rule of thumb is to just physically check the food (look for signs or smell it first) rather than relying on the expiration date.

Expiration dates are estimates anyways, I've had food spoil way before and way after the days shown. As long as the food is something relatively solid (not majority liquid or dairy product), it passes the sight and sniff test, and it's eaten day of, then it's probably fine.

Usually when there is a discount, it’s not because it’s expired, more like it will expire very soon than others. Over at Canada there are 30% discounts for foot that will expire a day or two later. Or even on that day. Also for food that is 1 day expired, it’s still safe to eat. The expiration date is the “best date” to eat, not necessarily saying “it has gone bad that day”.

I don't know about Japan but in America and in the U.K it is illegal to sell after the expiration date, the date shown is likely the best before date, although with rice and raw seafood they can't be that far apart.
