Green dots need less color tint in order for the green light to reflect off the inside of the glass. Red is a lower wave length of light than green, and therefore you need a blueish hue to off set that low energy, so more light is reflected to the user's eye by blocking it from transmitting through the glass. It makes the red "pop" as blue blocks red light better. For night vision use, the lens for the green reticle will be coated to block/ reflect green colors - like the reticle AND your green phosphor NODs. That's why the red reticle'd dot sight works better.
@CDOES Жыл бұрын
Thank you for the education! Makes absolutely perfect sense!
@KeterMalkuth Жыл бұрын
My question then would be how the green tint would affect night vision, unless you're using a clip on NVG in front of your red dot, for some odd reason? Assuming we're referring to passive aiming here, Nods translate infrared light into visible light of a single color. The spectrum of light that the tint blocks, hopefully, shouldn't be within the infrared bands of light. If it was, you'd think that the red reticle tint would be worse for night vision, as red is closer to infrared than green is. All that said, I just don't understand how the night vision use would be affected the way you describe?
@lawless911sc Жыл бұрын
@@KeterMalkuth I probably hip shot my comment a bit, so here goes it. Let's use Green plant life as viewed by the naked eye. Chlorophyll gives plants their green color because it does not absorb the green wavelengths of white light. Chlorophyll, which cannot be detected by visible light, is sensitive to near infrared light. A high percentage of near infrared light is reflected off the leaves in healthy plants. Also, reflected near-infrared radiation can be sensed by satellites, allowing scientists to study vegetation from space. Healthy vegetation absorbs blue- and red-light energy to fuel photosynthesis and create chlorophyll. A plant with more chlorophyll will reflect more near-infrared energy than an unhealthy plant. Thus, analyzing a plants spectrum of both absorption and reflection in visible and in infrared wavelengths can provide information about the plants' health and productivity. So it goes with the coatings on the lens of the dot sight: The green dot will not show up brightly unless you turn the brightnesses settings waaaay up and get reduced battery life - unless you coat the lens with a filter that blocks or reflects these wavelengths of light. This causes the green dot to "pop" and it will also block near-infrared light as well. The green phosphor dot display will only display green at the ocular end of the NODs, but you must also keep in mid that depending on what hue of green the dot sight lens is calibrated to block/reflect that will also have some effect on what color is displayed on a green phosphor display (darker or brighter). That's not to say that if you had a white phosphor dot display that you could then easily see through the green dot sight - I hope I didn't confuse anyone over that. Whatever coatings are on the green dot sight they are having a similar effect as a LIF (light interference filter) maybe in the 500ish nm spectrum. Next time you have a set of Nods on, try looking at a bunch of green plant life, and you will notice a variety of different hues and brightnesses that do not represent what you would see with your naked eye. I hope this is the answer you were looking for.

From a retail RMR site, they reported that overall, people with an astigmatism report that the green color is more “friendly” plus uses less power and distorts less. @nighthawk9264 Жыл бұрын
Green has less of a tint because our eyes are so much more sensitive to green light. We perceive it as brighter -> the dot can be darker compared to the background -> needs less power -> no notch filter needed. The notch filter is artificially creating the same effect, by filtering red light out, hence making the red dot brighter compared to the environment. Next time Steiner MPS? 😇

It's really a shame that prism optics are like 3 inch eye relief. An etched reticle could resolve this whole situation. Maybe someday we'll have the technology. I have tried many of the EPS Carry versions. The ONLY one I use today is the EPS Carry MRS in Green. It is the most expensive, but it is also the most feature packed. I've got over 8,000 rounds through a couple of them with no issues at all. The EPS Carry MRS in Green has one additional feature that the Red version doesn't. Because the Green emitter is more energy efficient, Holosun was able to give users more control. So you can set the "Minimum" Brightness setting even in *Auto* Mode. So you can set the reticle to be bright enough to use indoors and even under a weapon light. But once you go into a brighter area, the reticle will still automatically brighten to adjust.

I have a 6 MOA Green EPS (full size) on a S&W Model 66. I like the size of the dot, as someone with astigmatism, I find the larger dots bloom less for me. I like the EPS, but I'm considering replacing it with an ACSS 507C.
@touge242 Жыл бұрын
I had the ACSS 507c, took it off for a 509t-X2, I think the chevron is pointless: - on a pistol most aiming is center of mass sloppy sight picture, where the chevron becomes a lopsided "large dot". Pistol shooting lacks the precision of using top of the chevron at a 6-oclock hold with inherent distance holds for the rest of the geometry. - The oversized circle is a neat gimmick that loses all value after a few hours of presentation practice. - Realizing I have an astigmatism myself (why are dots always so fuzzy??), the precise chevron looses more value with the fuzziness due to said astigmatism. Overall I'd say the ACSS 507C is great on paper, but no real value over a normal dot in practice. Finally, after running that open emitter 507c on a backcountry handgun for one season, I definitively claim that open dots are pure obsolete trash
@CDOES Жыл бұрын
That's good to hear. For me the red doesn't bloom as bad. Either way 6 moa is ideal for pistol
@seanoneil277 Жыл бұрын
I've used EPS (red) 6MOA extensively, and the ACSS 507C about 3/4 as much time. They are good for different purposes I think. For USPSA & Steel Challenge I'd prefer the 6MOA EPS. For a pistol that's unfamiliar the ACSS outer ring helps a bit, but I find the chevron reticle distracting for faster shooting in matches. Functionally it's faster if I just put the whole chevron where I want to hit, but my brain wants to use the tiny point of the chevron and I slow down needlessly to accommodate that. So it's slower in matches even if it's helpful in orienting the sight picture otherwise. The ACSS might be the best training optic to help people dial in their presentation, however. It's really good for that. It's also very good for awkward shots from positions that don't let you begin from a known draw presentation. Ultimately I'm probably going to put it on a precision AR as an offset RDS.

I got some friends in law enforcement and they did training with "robot targets" (basically dummies on big rc cars) they said that if your half way close to a threat your not going to have time to aim. It's just muscle memory and point shooting. After hearing this, my theory is that if you have time to actually aim, it's going to be at a greater distance where accuracy is more important. For this reason I went with the 2moa dot. Definitely don't think you made a bad choice.

Their SCS Carry optics are only available in green. Because they have no battery other than an internal capacitor system (?), they require absolute minimal acceptable power draw. Green is much easier to see with less power being used. Also, I have astigmatism in both eyes. Dots are hard for me to use without my corrective glasses. That said, the green dot (and green lasers) are dramatically easier for me to pick up on without RX glasses. Not quite grasping why the more heavily tinted lens on the red (which makes it easier to see on the projected surface) appears to have more light transmission under dark conditions. I haven't tried it myself, but your camera makes it pretty obvious. Nice review.
