Meal Worm 2021 Edition, Holsinger's Fly Shop

This week I am showing you the new way I prefer to tie my meal worm patterns. If you would go back and check out my old video on this fly from a couple years ago you will notice how much cleaner, smoother and more realistic this pattern looks. On top of that, I think this way is easier to tie and achieve a cleaner look. This is also the pattern that we sell in the box at the shop now.

Shawn--I enjoy all of your tying videos. In addition to these flies being productive and fun to tie you present them in a realistic manner. The overwhelming proportion of the tiers watching these videos are tying for our own use and not for sale. It is unrealistic for us to keep on hand all the different materials and colors available. It seems like every video tier associated with a fly shop has a new feather, fur, synthetic or hook for the fly they are featuring and present the fly as " if you don't have left handed gray and white seal's ear fibers you can't tie this." Your instructions generally offer alternative materials we may already have. I tend to avoid the guys hyping the "new " product and buy from the guys providing knowledge instead. Holsinger's being one of them. Thanks again.

Thank you very much for your comment. I absolutely hate when a guy comes in the fly shop and says “I have to have “X” material because that’s what the pattern calls for.” Often times there are better materials out here than the original. Also the original was probably from another part of the country and a slightly different color or size would work better in your area. In my early years of fly tying my closest fly shops were 30 and 50 miles away. We didn’t have the internet with next day shipping. On top of that, I just didn’t have the money to have all the latest fads in the sport. I learned to use what I had. We try to carry the new materials but we try to judge and choose materials we think will last in the industry and not just be a one fly wonder. We only have so much room in the shop to hang stuff. Just getting back in to fly fishing and tying after 15yr looks like a awesome fly for the schuylkill to trick the bronze backs and the trout in the spring.

This one is not that bad. Never ruffled any internet feathers with this one. The Squiggle Worm is guaranteed to start a fight over whether it’s a fly or not. Whether it is or not it catches tons of fish.
