The era prior to human settlement took place more than 12,000 years ago. During this time, most fires were started by lightning, and fire regimes changed with the evolving topography, climate, and vegetation.
Next came the Native American era where fire was the number one tool utilized to manage the landscape. California Indian tribes used fire to promote certain crops, clear out vegetation, communicate at long distances, and even hunt.
The era of Euro-American settlement brought major changes to fire patterns due to the removal of indigenous people, widespread mining, grazing livestock, and the introduction of nonnative species.
In the early 1900s, we began the fire suppression era to protect timber supplies, watersheds, and life. This war on fire backfired as fuels built up, setting the stage for more intense fires in the future.
The lessons learned led to the ecosystem management era where fire is accepted as a natural part of the environment, but we balance its benefits against other things we value.
