Hey everybody, Jack from California. I know the rule is 70/70 but i find keeping my cigars at 65 humidity has helped tremendously when it comes to the smoking experience. Perfect burns every time. I know some like to dry box, i find that at 65 they burn perfect without a dry box. The flavor is better too. To each is own of course but lower humidity creates a better burn factor for me. Either way however u enjoy them keep it going. Cigars are a great joy in life, so however u enjoy them keep at it. And shout out to Holts for the best cigar content on the internet

Fantastic video gentlemen!!! Unless I'm smoking a torpedo or a perfecto, I use a straight cut. Torpedoes and Perfectos I use a deep V cut, like the Colibri. And regarding humidity for cigars, I use to have a ridiculous amount of burn issues. But once I started holding my cigars at 62% humidity, I have had much more flavorable, better burning cigars. When checking my humidity within the cigar, most of the time they come out b/t 58%-64% all day long. Doesn't matter what kind of cigar it is, the flavor profile for me is best if held in that range.

Rocky makes good cigars. So does/do the companies that make Perdomo, Ashton, Davidoff (kinda. I’ve been hearing people mention quality control issues after Henke left the company), Olivia, Black Crown, Black Label, My Father, and a bunch of others from cheaper than dirt to ‘your wife will be filing for divorce if she realizes how much you spent on that new box of cigars’. I’m also a huge fan, more than I am of cigars, of pipes and pipe tobacco. The best part is that we all have hearts large enough to love many different brands and that’s okay! We’re limited not by our hearts but by our bank accounts, and mine gets beaten up and has its lunch money stolen by other people’s bank accounts. 😂

@ I’m more of a shade-grown Connecticut guy myself - I love mild but tasty cigars and I’m not a big fan of really dark and spicy cigars, although I smoke some pipe tobaccos that are basically just Latakia-Bombs. I don’t know why I can smoke a Lat-Bomb but not like dark, oily, and spicy cigars. I dunno - I’m kinda weird, I guess. Like I love perique tobacco, I love Virginia tobacco, but I absolutely LOATHE any and all Va/Per tobacco blends and I’ve tried a lot of them! Different boats for different goats I guess 🤣 I’m 100% not a tobacco snob. As long as you enjoy it then it doesn’t matter to me if you’re smoking a $2 cigar or a $30 one, and I don’t care if you only smoke Esoterica Penzance in a $5,000 Ivarrson briar pipe or the cheapest cherry tobacco in the cheapest corn cob pipe imaginable - I just want people to enjoy smoking cigars and pipe tobaccos no matter if I personally like that brand/blend or not. Lord knows that there’s far too many Tobacco Snobs out there already!

I prefer a V cut, keeps the bits out of my mouth. Instead of touching up, i hold the side you want to burn on the bottom(i know it sounds weird), it works very well for me. Great video.
@OriginalOldSkoolFunk5 күн бұрын
Great tips as usual, gentlemen. I v cut, toast, light, THEN PURGE by blowing air through the cigar. In my opinion, the extra air gets the cherry hot without the flame from the lighter and that seems to guarantee that I've got a good light. Also, I prefer a single torch lighter if I'm making touch ups. I can be more accurate with my flame and "square up" a bad burn that way.

I use the v-cut for torpedoes, pyramids,belicosos and box pressed. I like a punch for any 48-54 ring gauge and a guillotine cut on 38-46 ring gauge. Depending on ring gauge I use a triple flame to start the cigar and I like a single flame for touch ups. Been smoking premium Cigars for 30 years but the last 2 years I've really got passionate and smoking much more. Been working as a Beer Consultant and we have a humidor at the store. In regard to which cut is best… For me, the individual cigar determines what cut to use. If I had my way, I would always do a single punch, that’s my favorite. But most cigars have a tighter pack than the punch can handle, and to me, that’s when I tend to have a lot of burn issues. In my experience, if you have too tight of a draw, the cigar won’t burn as good as having a looser draw. So whenever I go to light up a cigar, I make sure I have a fairly loose draw, taking whatever cut the cigar requires. I think the bigger factor of burn quality came down to humidity. I switched from keeping my sticks at around 70% down to a target of 65%, and I’ve had better success with the lower humidity. Love the videos guys, keep it up!

I normally do a guillotine cut. But depending on ring of cigar I use different cuts. On a 60 ring or larger I like a figure 8 punch cut. On 52 to 60 ring I like a v-cut. Every thing else I will guillotine cut. I keep my humidor at 65-67 humidity at 70 degrees. This gives me the best burn. A well made cigar does make the most difference. As far as lighting a cigar, everyone should have their own lighter, don't borrow a lighter. LOL.

One issues I’ve had on a few cigars is the ember jumping back into an unlit portion of the wrapper. I’m talking about an inch or so back from the burning edge of the wrapper. My initial thought was it must be a pinhole in the wrapper igniting, but I’ve seen it on an area of the wrapper that is (in appearance) consistent with the rest. I’m still leaning towards a pinhole or an area of the wrapper that is more dry for some reason, any thoughts on this? A second note to add, I think the quality of the cut matters more than the type of cut. If you use a punch or v cut and are off center it can affect how evenly the air flows through channels of the rolled tobacco thus affecting evenness of the burn. Same thing with a straight cut, if it’s crooked it can have the same effect especially if you miss an edge of the cap.
@graysonlawrence59846 күн бұрын
What humidity/temp do you keep your cigars at? Ive never heard of that issue before, but to me it seems likely to be a humidity issue. Also, what brands are you smoking?
@dsouther112 күн бұрын
@ I keep them at 70f/68 relative humidity. I’ve had it once on a Espinosa Knuckle Sandwich maduro (love the blend) but more frequently on blends from Drew Estates such as once on a sweet Jane and twice with fat bottom Beatty’s. The offender are the factory smokes by Drew Estates, yes they are a bundle cigar so I’m not really too bothered when it happens on one of them since they are often my walk in the woods cigar.

Great show Guys. Personally, I prefer either a double bladed straight cut., or a reverse V cut. A simple single-blade straight cut cutter can easily mangle a tip, especially if it's a well used or cheap cutter. And a regular V-cutter begins its cut on the outer edge, which can tear the cap.

As far as cut I think it depends on size corona I get the beta burn with straight cut all others it’s just what you like best
@tp54016 күн бұрын
I v cut everything. Doesn't seem to matter. I think it comes down foremost to construction. Any cut on well constructed cigar will burn beautifully. A 💩4 cigar will burn like a canoe in a tunnel when the lights went out no matter the cut you used. Humidity of the cigar is second most important factor as far as I can tell. Fact thought... The better a cigar burns the better it tastes. Maybe it's in my head... But a crappy uneven burn I'm fighting with to keep even just isn't nearly as pleasant and savory. I'm anal with keeping an even burn line and holding the ash as long as possible. I can taste a difference when the ash is about to drop and the minute that ash has fallen.

Hey guys, Huge fan from Australia! I have a question about over humidification. I have a 500 capacity humidor which i keep around half full at all times. I have a boveda pack (69%) on each shelf so three in total. The hygrometer is always sitting around 67-70% humidity however the temp sometimes climbs to around 76F on a warm day. The other day i lit up a cigar and i could not keep it lit, it tunnelled and was an absolute nightmare. After relighting about 10 times and giving myself a head spin i just gave up. I can only think that it must have been over humidified, however ive tested the hygrometer and it is calibrated correctly. What else could be going on here, other cigars i have had since then smoke just fine?? Keep up the awesome videos guys!!
@graysonlawrence59846 күн бұрын
I used to have that issue sometimes, and for me it took taking my humidor from 69-70% humidity down to 64-65% humidity. One factor could be the relative humidity where you live, if the air is pretty humid it can slightly affect your cigars even as you’re smoking them. Not anything crazy, but that could be a variable. You can test if it’s the humidity by making a small tupperdor and storing a few sticks around 65% and see if that helps

Another tip: don’t be hasty to touch up your cigar. I used to be super ocd about making sure my cigar was burning perfectly, I would always touch it up if it was even just a little uneven. The reality is that most cigars, if they’re from a reputable factory, will have some minor burn issues, but will almost always correct themselves if you give it some time. Of course, sometimes touching up is unavoidable, and there’s no issue with taking the lighter to it gently. But now, I learned to be patient, and almost always the issues resolve themselves. It just takes experience to know what to leave alone and what needs a touch up.

Purging, especially on a re-lignt. Sometimes, if touve been pulling too hard or fast, or it went iut, you need that purge to clear it out. Might make all the difference in going to the end or trashing it. Salut!

I knowwww heat rises, I understand fire well, and for some reason it always works best for me to put the side that isn't burning down and give it a puff or 2 to catch it up. If it isn't fixed after a couple minutes, I'll use the torch to touch it up. But I've tried turning the side that isn't burning up and it's gotten worse! How?? 😂 how is it defying the nature of heat rising?

I don't trust the punch cut, I think that's concentrated too much and does not allow air full airflow

My worst problem is trying to toast a cigar and then fire it with a match or single torch. I always seem to get an uneven burn. But now I just roast untill it's cherries
