Some of us who understand Metallica came to them at an early age because of the trauma of our youth. Discovered them in 85 when I was 11. already saw my mother and sister try to commit suicide father left and was already trying to escape with drugs. At almost 49 I don't know how I survived my youth.

The lyrics of the song, written by Hetfield, address his mother's battle with cancer, to which the "it" in the title refers. They can be seen as either describing the emotional pain he feels for the loss, or the physical pain his mother was feeling while she was ill. Both of his parents were Christian Scientists, and did not believe in medicine. The lyrics are also interpreted as dealing with anger issues. Hetfield's father, Virgil, died in late 1996, during Metallica's Load tour.

Great song guys! Its is incredible to think how much backlash this band got in this era because of the musical style switch (from metal to a hard rock transition, which we can see here in this song). And now, how well this type of songs have aged for the band. If you wish to explore the heavier side of Metallica, you can check “Master of Puppets” which is a song that nowadays has become very popular thanks to the TV show “Stranger Things”.

Dude, I agree and I’m one of those grizzled old school Thrashers that was grossed out by The Black Album when it was released in 1991. I like Load way better to this day but, by 1996 I pretty much gave up on them ever returning to form. They’re a different band now and I have to pretend they’re not the same band that recorded Kill ‘Em All, Ride The Lightning, Master Of Puppets, and …And Justice For All.

@@julianortiz4151 I agree, definitely a different band. I still like a good deal of what they do, though, and in many ways, I'm glad they changed. Unless you're AC/DC, trying to remain unchanged for forty years is an impossible task.

I'd say you guys have done a pretty good mix so far, but you're still missing quite a few "essential" Metallica songs. I have seen them 5 times. The first time when I was 9 in Cincinnati at Riverbend arena in 1992. The second time when I was 17 in 2000 at Kentucky Speedway. James Hettfield was hurt in a jet ski accident and couldn't make it. The other bands were Korn, Kid Rock, Power Man 5000 and System of a down. At the end we got to see the other Metallica members play songs with the other 4 bands. It was amazing and we got free tickets to see Metallica at an upcoming date at Rupp Arena in KY a month later which was the 3rd time I saw them. The 4th time I saw them at Ohio Stadium aka the horse shoe in Columbus Ohio in 03 when I was 20. That was a stacked one too. Metallica, Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, Mud Vayne and Def Tones. The last time when I was 21 I saw Metallica and Godsmack at US Bank arena in Cincinnati in 2003. All of them were amazing and of every band and artist I've seen live nothing compares. Please do Master of Puppets next.
