Hi! I'm a guitar teacher for many years so, in case you haven't gotten an answer this sounds like open D tuning. Instead of an EADGBE tuning, it's DADF#AD tuning. Alec tends to flock to open tunings quite often and it helps in song writing. Hope this helps!
