There is a country official calling out the appropriation so I am positive they see something we dont which should be respected. In an age where cultures meet migration equals economic opportunity, corporations are taking advantage of cultural diffusion hoping to achieve the blanket image of "all is good in the world" when in reality these actions are just another facet of age old colonialism. Cultural appropriation is not just an indigenous issue, the word "cultural" refers to all cultural systems and I am glad Romania stood up and voiced their concerns.

This traditional blouse is hand made on my region called Sibiu, placed in Transylvania. Making them takes a lot of time and knowledge. My grandma used to make them.Let's not forget the material all cotton, linen and wool all made by hand. The cost is between 50 to 200 USD. Actually summer I'm going back to Romania, already ordered a few. BTW Dior did it also with Romania and a few countries in south america.

I think it's fine to be inspired by the design, but like any responsible person or company, they should cite their sources. Now they've been caught, there should be consequences, they can't backtrack and just cite them.

I just had a conversation with a Romanian friend who explained how important hand embroidery is for their culture, in apparel and home linens. Apparently Tom Ford did the same type of shirts in Spring 2012 - slightly different styling. I wonder if that's why Romania formed the craft association in 2013? So this time they are calling it out? LV should provide the cultural reference and make a small donation. Next time they should actually collaborate with them. Hand craftmanship in textiles and needlework is a dying art. Who better than these big luxury fashion houses to support these creative arts thus continuing these traditions?

LVMH uses a factory in Cisnadie, Romania (Transylvania), to make most of its shoes before sending them back to France or Italy wear the soles are added so they can stamp it Made in Italy/France in order to cut costs and maximize shareholder value, and its perfectly legal under EU laws, the workers are paid very little (less than 232 Euros per month), but get weekends off, some overtime pay and the factory uses safer materials and provides a clean/comfortable environment...

It's an interesting conversation. There is a very fine line between cultural appropriation and cultural appreciation. Interestingly, Pharrell has previously been accused of the former offence via his 2014 Elle UK cover, where he wore a Native American head dress, this is despite the fact he has Native American ancestry.🤔

Idk, arent there WAY more important things happening in the world other that a designer being inspired by "Ethnic Garb" (and to be clear I am reffering to the Cultural minister's who have issue with this) I may be missing the point, which may be why I dont see it to begin with.. I can see giving credit where its due absolutely, but permission? Idk. Designers get inspired by culture all the time, dont they? Interesting, informative post tho😊

I was in the live chats, and I had a different opinion than I do now. I’m so glad that I watched the video over again. I have gone to northern Transylvania and have enjoyed seeing costumes from Romania, the embroidery and the handmade material. Now that I look at the image in your video that is shown Romania Ministry of culture ( I don’t know the name of the group) I totally see the issue. Yes, Romania needs to negotiate with Louis Vuitton, and Louis Vuitton needs to reply and repay in-kind. I’m sure these issues for other cultures will be coming up and it’ll be interesting to see how it is dealt with. Will they hire the cultural peoples to create what is theirs for these fashion companies and be reimbursed for it? Really intense, deep well, conversation thanks Dacob and for really diving into this.

The problem is modern fashion doesn’t have any grounding in reality. It’s all fantasy. So designers mine authentic garb and folkloric costume as well as religious habits to bring a sense of history and veneration to what would be frivolity. They also extol the history of the design house to try and bring some weight to their designs. Most of the ideas are whimsical and very very quickly thrown together, so they have to reach back to history or folklore or religion or the past designs of their own brand to try to make the clothes more important.

Should Italy start suing all artists small and large for all their culture appropriation? France too? Because there's tens millions of people who appropriate those cultures every day, and have been for decades. I can't imagine a good outcome if Romania and others start playing this ridiculous game.

I feel that there is a LOT of clothing out there that is inspired by National costumes. Peasant dresses, blouses, etc. I sew, so I see patterns and fabrics often. But this is pretty specific. Just acknowledge the source. Like Dior did when they released the collection inspired by Mexico and Frida Kahlo. Several years ago, Michael Kors had a long white dress that was clearly inspied by a tradtional Mexican wedding dress. I even have a pattern to make one. The originals are much prettier though. ❤

It's a beautiful blouse and I appreciate the reference to the original Romanian design. It should be a no brainer to credit inspiration but to have to ask for permission and negotiate the use of something that you are inspired by is silly. We live in a world of copyright laws but things that have been with us for hundreds or thousands of years are not copyrighted. We should be able to take inspiration from people and cultures without instantly needing to scream "cultural appropriation". This is frankly more of a reflection of our over active cancel culture. Just my opinion of course and I really enjoyed the time and thought given to this video and topic.

I can safely say they will not compensate them though cause everyone will be coming for them for past collections etc. I am so tired of these lazy brands. I went to the LV site and did not see it so guess they took it down. Bad PR with the Dior bag scandal..I’m sure they do not want any more negative press. Additionally I noticed they have all these t-shirts with chains attached to them. Such a copy …..and they really leaned in on this. so lazy…….they will not get my hard earned coins for sure on this BS. My two cents

Study the history of fashion people - all fashion has been a mixture of original ideas & ideas from other cultures - it's not appropriation it's inspiration. Let's face it who before all this fuss had even heard of Romanian blouses? Haven't they thought that by a global fashion house highlighting the craft it may actually help their industry? If not and it is appropriation then Scotland can expect to receive money anytime tartan is used, England when tweed is used, Japan when anything resembling a kimono is used etc etc....

Cultural appropriation is presently an ethical and moral issue. It is not illegal to be "creatively inspired" by the traditional designs of miscellaneous cultures. Even if that amounts to a blatant ripoff. Yes LV should credit the inspirational source, to its customers for this product. I don't see that the LV blouse is an exact copy of any of the Romanian blouses. Elements of the Romanian blouses have been copied, sure. I'm not defending what LV did. I'm discussing what is a legal issue, counterfeit. LV copied lots of Native American design in the recent cowboy collection.

Vuitton fashion is so unattractive! How many people are going to buy this shirt anyway? Especially with the puffy sleeves which is right out of pirate fashion! Which pirate association should we all pay rights to for puffy sleeves? I am against all this cultural appropriation BS. It's not stealing. It's a question of the creative spirit being influenced by. The whole western art canon is based on one motif from one country influencing the next generation. It's how we move forward.

My guess- the designer has never once in their life even paid attention to Romania, let alone seen a fashion picture from it. The blouse is a typical beach shirt you can find at any tourist surf shop and they made it in a black & white color combo because that IS the most common color combo on the planet. It's not that deep.
@stefaniaadina8992

If this would have been copied from Indian, Native American or any other non-white culture all the internet would be in uproar to the sky. If it's white on white f.. them: beach blouse. If it's just your typical beach blouse why did they take the embroidery pattern and the placement of it? Why not place it horizontally? Why not other pattern. Considering that they have factories in the exact same area that be blouse comes from I highly doubt is just an innocent coincidence. You have any idea how the "beach blouse" is constructed? Somebody said pirate shirt. IT has NOTHING to do in actual construction with a pirate shirt but well, when you're ignorant and disrespectful it doesn't matter you trample thousands of years of tradition

Cultural appropriation usually refers to Europeans appropriating cultural elements of Native Non-European peoples. Louis Vuitton is an European company so maybe they thought they had a pass, as Romanian culture is also considered European. There are many cultures with peasant blouses in Europe and the Americas. The colors and design, however are spot-on. He needs to negotiate. I will also say in this Diverse world, many people with European ancestry are told to check their privilege. We need to respect art and culture, not just ones that need the quotas.
