As a future architect, this is very helpful thank you. Further, the tips and tricks and renovations help everyone-we should design wheel chair comfortable homes every time.

Zarah Zalazar Thank you for your comment. 😊 That’s awesome! More places need to incorporate universal design in general.

I love that door to load the groceries. I know what's on my summer project to-do list. Thanks.

Well, I just got through watching your video of your house and your ramps in your kitchen and looks like you’ve done a marvelous job of getting all of that installed. My name is Michael. I guess I should say, and I am a person with a disability in an electric chair, and, I have a house that I pretty much designed my own and added the features in before the house was finished so I didn’t have to do any remodeling later. And I will show you some pictures except right now I’m having some kidney stone issues and I’m not really feeling well enough to tackle that project. But what I wanted to suggest is my oven is a regular standard oven except for the door opens to the side. and I’m trying to think my door opens to the left so then I can get up close and get what I need out of the oven as I have short arms and so I can get what I need out of the oven and the side of my oven. I have a little counterspace that I can put things on the counter when they’re hot. Also, my kitchen cabinets instead of the building, then the standard height we put in a standard height kitchen cabinet except we took out the toe kick, which is like 4 inches and so we drop the whole kitchen down 4 inches from the original height. What that also did was I could also drop the upper cabinets down a few more inches I still can’t reach him Mike person I can’t reach him but I have grabbers and all that kind of stuff to put stuff up there if I need it. I live alone so I have to do almost everything on my own and cooking in the kitchen has never been my fun place but I am I have a way to do it. I have a counter top plates you know so you instead of an oven and and burners I have separate. My top burners are located on the center as you go into the kitchen straightahead my countertops are over there and right beside my oven. my refrigerator is right beside of that and then turning around and the space is I have all my lower cabinets and I don’t know will.i.am I’m gonna have to get myself a Cameron and show you but as you said H individual set up is different and so what what Renee might not work that well for you but it seems like you have a lot more range of motion where I don’t so but I found it really interesting that when I was looking for stoves that I found one that was open to the side and that’s when I pull the like in the old style when you pull the door down, you have to be really careful not to burn yourself or if you’re trying to bend over and pull something out your mail, you may fall right into the oven so I have found that the opening of the door sideways. It’s much more convenient for me. One thing I do use, which is very helpful for me is I have a big pizza board you don’t like they used to make pizzas the wooden boards you slider man pizza goes on when you pull it out. Well I use that pizza board as a lap board and when I want to carry something that’s hot I put it on that board and then we let the round and then put it up on the counter. I will try to get some pictures of that as soon as I get to feeling better, but you’re doing a great job. I really enjoy your videos and your lovely lady and I just I try to catch everyone and that I I may learn something along the way. Love this old dog and 71 so this old dog does and will learn new tricks and I know you will be teaching me a lot. OK that’s pretty much my notes for today. Just wanted to say hi and let you know that I am watching and I am learning and if there’s anything that I can see that might help you I will let you know but you’re doing a great job and I love the ramps. I love the little gate on the ramp in the garage that you can put stuff out open the gate put it on the floor that’s really cool I like that. I can’t bend over and pick it up, but it be great. It’s a great little asset. OK take care I’ll be watching this is Michael.

Your adaptive environment is so impressive Lindsey! My grandparents have both had foot surgeries in the last month and are unable to walk. Your videos are so uplifting to people who are not used to a wheelchair. I will share all of your tips to them. Thanks for sharing!

Could you maybe make a video of the process of you going to the grocery store and bringing home your groceries, and bringing them into the house? I really like the door on the side of your ramp that you can open and put things on. That’s a really good idea.

$10/mo. which include all delivery fees, but there is an upcharge on each item. I *wish* it was a thing when I was in college. lol I still need to do a grocery shopping video too though. I promise, I will. 😊

What is the pitch on your ramps? The two I have are too steep for me to roll up/down manually on my own. I'm interested in modifying them.
@MeantToBeLindseyB8 ай бұрын
Our big ramp (the one outside on our deck) is 1 inch of rise for every 12.5 inches of run with a 5'x5' landing every 30 feet. Our ramp in the garage is about twice as steep as that, but we generally grab the handrails to pull ourselves up rather than push ourselves up.

I'm sorry for this stupid question but I was wondering if there are any nail/manicure issues when in wheelchair?
@MeantToBeLindseyB4 жыл бұрын
Not a stupid question. The issues I have personally are if I hit my nails on my wheels too hard or hit my hand with my chair in someway or something like that. I get gel manicures though. They're stronger, last much longer and don't generally chip. Trying to get into my car after a pedicure is challenging since flip flops won't stay on my feet but what I do to help that is I will pull one of my car mats out and put it on the ground so my bare feet don't touch the pavement and then I put it back in my car once I'm done loading my wheelchair. I also use a quick dry spray on my pedicures and have them do my pedicures first so they have longer to dry.

Your counters seem quite high to me compared to your height. How do you transfer pans and chop food etc? I use a powerchair and I am tall too so I have regular counters but I know manual users here have lowered counters.

I’m sorry you feel that way. While the thought of having a disability can be scary to some who haven’t lived it, I assure you, it can also give you a completely different perspective on life and a level of compassion for others and their struggles as well. Having a disability doesn’t necessarily feel like a death sentence to everyone who has one. One of my biggest challenges/frustrations in life is waiting for the rest of the world to catch up to what needs to happen to make it more adapted.
